I Love School

August is one of my favorite months of the year. Sure, the weather is warm, but it's really the anticipation of the new school year that always excites me.

First, there are new outfits. Who doesn't love shopping and getting new clothes? When I was in school, I wore a uniform for eight years, but it was still a new uniform every year, and it prompted a shopping trip with Mom. Count me in for that!

Second, there are new school supplies. I love school supplies! There is something so alluring about newly sharpened pencils, brand new markers, and blank paper. Imagine... a pencil or marker that has never left a mark, and you get to be the first person to use it to express yourself. Its creativity and learning potential are encapsulated in a wooden or plastic container... like the concept of potential energy in the study of physics. Picking up that new pencil and using it unleashes your stored creative and intellectual potential.

However, back when I was the student, the biggest thing for me was the increasing wonder that each school year held: What teacher would I have? Which friends would be in my classes? What would I learn in the year ahead? All kinds of questions swirled in my head. I wondered about the lessons and the bits of knowledge that would be woven into them. I thought about what I might discover and how it would affect the things that I knew already. What would I be able to achieve in the upcoming school year? What doors would open for me? Some questions would get answered as time moved forward, but others would linger or raise more questions.

Truly, the start of a new school year holds all the promise of what you are to become. It's the ground where the seeds of your future are sown. I approached my own school years with enthusiasm and curiosity. Now, I have the joy of sharing my kids' anticipation of their school year. As we shop for their new supplies and prepare for the first day, I find myself wondering how they will change over the year and who will they become as a result of what they have learned.

Sometimes they are the ones doing the teaching and reminding me that life is an endless learning journey. Sharing the love of learning is one of my greatest joys in being a parent.

- Julie

Favorite Product I've designed:

School Memories Collection
School Memories Collection

The School Memories Collection is one of my favorites because it reminds me of shopping for school supplies, the excitement that comes before starting a new school year, and my general love of learning. I wanted this collection to be as much about discovery as it was about school. The retro colors in the palette were inspired by wistful remembrances of textbooks, school halls, and a time when my days were filled with discovery and the ultimate potential of what my future could bring.

Online Class Report

Once a month, we share with you the details of a recent digital scrapbooking class that has been held at Scrap Girls. I'd like to share with you about a popular class by Anna Mansfield called Intentional Design.

div

Online Class – Intentional Design
Instructor: Anna Mansfield

Every digital scrapbooker knows it's easy to get stumped when starting new layouts. Maybe there's a new collection you're excited to work with, or you have your heart set on scrapping particular photos, but then you draw a creative blank and aren't sure where (or how) to start. We've all been there, right? The Intentional Design online class was the perfect opportunity for computer scrapbookers to learn how to conquer white screen syndrome, and how to utilize Anna's design prompts for creating thoughtful and artful layouts.

Using various methods, this class taught students how to study photos to identify end-design goals for layouts. The learning didn't stop there, though, as students went on to learn basic design principles, tips for utilizing text, and ideas for incorporating embellishments and final touches. Weekly homework assignments tackled topics such as identifying style and mood, as well as working outside of one's comfort zone.

This class was held over two weekly chat room class sessions. Students received class materials with step-by-step PDF instructions, including screenshots to make it easy for following along. As with all our classes, there was a private class gallery set up for students where they could post their before-and-after work and receive feedback. There was also a private class forum for the students to ask questions and share information, which was another excellent way for students to further interact with Anna. At the end of each class session, students received a transcript of the chat.

I've chosen two class layouts to share with you. This layout is by Florida granny from Anna's Week #1 homework assignment:

Games

August Message Board Game: BINGO!

Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.

Contests

August Monthly Layout Contest: The temperatures are hot, and staying cool is a must! Water is a priority in the summer heat! For the August Layout Contest, we'd love to see your layouts featuring water! Dig out those photos of the kids in the pool, the family on a boat ride, or even a waterfall! Journaling about what water means to you will help make this layout more meaningful to you in the future. Post your layouts in the August Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on August 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen winners, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
