Color Theory – Using Analogous Colors
Note: Tutorial created using PSCS5 with Windows Vista
Have you ever used analogous colors in your digital scrapbook pages? Are you wondering what analogous colors are? I'll share with you what I've learned about them, and I bet you'll want to give them a try.
Analogous colors are any three colors which are side by side on a 12-part color wheel. You'll find numerous combinations such as green, yellow-green, and yellow. Let me show you a 12-part color wheel and some of the analogous combinations.
There are more combinations of analogous colors than what I showed. Just remember that they are any three that are side-by-side on the color wheel.
Now for the million-dollar question: Why you would use analogous colors on your digital scrapbook layout? Because there is a pleasing quality to these low-contrast color combinations. Analogous color schemes are harmonious and can often be found in nature. Think of the colors during the fall season, including yellow, gold, and orange. An evening sky of blue, blue-violet, and violet shows another combination. Such harmonious colors are very attractive to the eye.
A tip to keep in mind is that you would want to choose one color to dominate, a second color to support, and a third color as an accent. When I was looking at the photos I wanted to include on my digital scrapbook layout, I chose the blue, blue-green, green combination. As a visual for myself, I used a circle brush in Photoshop on a blank white background to decide which color I wanted to be the dominant one, which one to support, and which one to use as an accent. Here's what that looked like:
Once I had my color scheme decided, I was able to choose papers and embellishments from my supplies that worked well together. The color wheel is a valuable tool for your digital scrapbook layouts. Try using an analogous color scheme in one of your layouts - and I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.

Using Repetition in Your Layout - Color
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 on a Mac
Repetition is a basic design principle and can be used in a variety of different ways in a digital scrapbooking layout, such as through shapes, elements, textures, themes, and our topic today, color. By repeating color, it helps guide the viewer's eye around the composition. Today I am going to show you a quick and sure way to create rhythm and balance in your layout using this design principle.
Consider making a color palette by selecting colors from your photograph that will reinforce the imagery or the subject.
TIP: To add tints and shades to your color scheme, open the Color Picker, then click the L radio button. The L represents lightness, and you will be able to change the slider without changing the purity.
You will be pleasantly surprised to discover how quickly your page will come together and begin to flow with the aid of the color palette and Color Picker. Scrap Girls designers often include a color palette with their collections, which can be very useful when echoing a color theme. In my example layout, I have referred to my color palette repeatedly for better continuity when choosing the colors for the alpha and the fabric swatches.
Use a color palette to make your digital scrapbooking layouts come together beautifully!

Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen winners, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
