It's the Little Things...
My 14-year-old son, Cody, is one of my best teachers. Early on in his life, we realized he was academically gifted - oh joy! Right? Soon we learned that this blessing comes with a few (many) challenges, as I'm sure the parents of other gifted boys can attest.
One of the biggest problems that he faced early on was tolerance for frustration. So many things just came so easily - again, oh joy! The downside was that when his efforts didn't yield just the results he wanted, just when he wanted them, he had no skill set for coping. A light bulb went off in my head: Coping with frustration is a learned behavior! I could tell him not to be frustrated from morning until night - and we'd both end up frustrated.
My husband and I put our heads together to come up with some ideas. It seems so obvious now, ten years later, but we decided to start him in some recreational sports programs. While he was academically gifted, his tall lanky frame left him athletically challenged. We figured that by introducing him to something that didn't come so naturally, with guidance in a supportive environment, he'd figure out the process of working through a challenge. And he was faced with many, many opportunities as he struggled to keep up with his peers. First came soccer, then basketball, then baseball, then football, then track - and as the years went by, his skills improved in one sport and then another. His mantra became, "It's the little things." The little details, small challenges, worked through one by one with patience, added up to success.
Last spring, he was awarded "Best 7th Grade Boy Athlete of the Year" for his middle school. Before the coach read his name, he said, "This young man has shown dedication and commitment to himself, to his teammates, and to his school by participating in many sports, both for school teams and for the community. When faced with challenges and adversity, he asks, ‘How do I get better?' He gives his best effort every day, always positive toward himself and his classmates." Sitting with a couple of neighborhood dads at the awards ceremony, you could have knocked me over with a feather when they announced my son's name! I confessed to my comrades that I did not ever see that one coming. They simultaneously turned to me and said, "We did!"
Three years ago, he picked up playing the saxophone. This was another venue by which he could learn that practice and dedication pay dividends, that desire is more important than natural talent, as Ro would say. We've had the opportunity to have a neighbor, who happens to be a saxophonist with the Air Force Band of the Pacific, help Cody. I heard his tutor say, "These are the little things. These are the details that will make the good great and the great excellent."
Cody nodded vigorously, "It's the little things. The little things make me better."
The other night I was struggling with a layout, not getting it quite the way I wanted it. I tried this and that. My computer was being fussy. I was being fussier - I'll confess that I was frustrated! Just then, I heard a beautiful improvisational riff of saxophone music coming from downstairs. It was pure musical joy! Once squeaky and harsh, this polished sound was now as natural as my son's own laughter. I realized then that it is good to be challenged, to stretch myself. Yes, scrapping is just a hobby for me, but it could be so much more. It couId be my vehicle to grow and learn and express myself in new ways. It could be my venue to practice working through details, getting better. It could be my way of working through "the little things." I learned that from my son.
Gosh, he's smart!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

August Message Board Game: BINGO!
Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Monday August 1st (Midnight MDT) in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Tuesday, August 2nd. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.
Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
