Tips for Taking a Child's Photo in a Natural Setting
Note: Article written using using Photoshop CS5 on a Mac
How many times have you taken the perfect shot, only to discover after viewing it closer that it's not so perfect after all, and by then, your photo opportunity has vanished?
By following these three key elements to a successful photo... composition, location, and lighting... you will most certainly be rewarded with a pleasing shot that has captured a magical moment.
Exhibit a certain mood or idea: Taking a picture of a child in a natural setting doing what he loves to do, such as playing in the sand or with his toys, etc., you are then capturing a more natural side of his personality.
Fill the frame: A child tends to get lost in the background if a photo is taken from too far a distance.
Use different angles: Children often photograph better when you get down low and look up at them. Your shot will be more candid, and you will capture their facial expressions better.
Select uncluttered backdrops: By taking a child's photo in a natural setting outdoors, you avoid having to maneuver around home décor, which can be quite distracting. The soft green shades provided by trees or a lawn or the pleasing neutral tones of a beach offer an uncluttered backdrop. Your local park, the front porch, an old building, a field of wildflowers, or a fence provide the opportunity for complimentary settings as well. However, do remember that you will want to focus on the child, not the surroundings.
Avoid high-contrast situations: Bright areas are quite distracting and often take attention away from the child. This is easily remedied by repositioning the child so he is either in the shade or in mild sunlight and then recompose the shot.
The layout below provides you with examples of the three elements discussed in this article. Nick's playful personality is exhibited as he discovers the thrill of tossing sand. The background is subtle and filled with non-distracting neutral tones. Smooth shadows are the result of taking this photo in the late afternoon, thus avoiding the hard shadows that are created by midday sun. A pleasing digital scrapbook page begins with a great photo, so why not give it your best "shot"?

Photography Scavenger Hunt
Note: Article written using PSCS4 with Windows 7
Are your kids bored? Looking for something to do to fill those last days of summer? Here’s a fun activity to try – a photography scavenger hunt. I recently did this with my kids – and we had a ton of fun. It was a great way to spend an afternoon, and we kept cool at the local mall. We killed a few birds with one stone, entertained all the kids, and I got some fun photos.
First, you need to make sure your kids have access to a digital camera. You also need to decide where you are going to do your scavenger hunt. Make a list of items they will need to photograph themselves in front of. (A fun variation of this would be to have a few groups of kids doing this – each group with their own digital camera.)
Next, give them a time limit to find all the items on their list. Get the kids on location, and set them free, assuming they are old enough to supervise themselves. (You are absolutely welcome to tag along – adult supervision could be a very good thing – especially when younger kids are doing this project.) Tell them the rules to the game, such as they must photograph themselves in front of/beside/in the items that are on the list. You can specify whether they all need to be in each photo or if a photo can have just one or two of them in it. It's your game – you can make the rules!
That's all there is to it! Once they've photographed themselves with their items and all the groups have met back at the predetermined meeting spot (if you are doing more than one group), take your memory card to a place that will develop your photos in an hour or less. Keep the kids entertained while the photos are printed. Grab your finished photos, and compare their lists to the photos – then be prepared for some giggles and laughs as everyone enjoys the photos from this very fun afternoon!
