Unexpected Endings

Seven years ago, I had planned a natural labor and delivery of our first child. As anyone who has ever been able to experience the gift of birth knows, it rarely goes as planned. Two weeks overdue, I was induced in the hospital. Labor came on suddenly and hard early the next morning, and I was very much overwhelmed, making it a very long day. Later that evening, after a long two hours of difficult pushing, our son was born. I came away feeling saddened that I had not really experienced it the way I had planned. I felt inadequate, low, and suffered many unpleasant physical symptoms as a result of a difficult birth. Although I had not required the dreaded (in my own mind) caesarean section, I had succumbed to an epidural, which in turn made the actual delivery very rough on my body. (Well, this was my thinking.)

We did have the joy of our wonderful baby boy, whom every nurse on the floor doted over... the only boy in the whole ward! A great 8 pounds, 15 ounces, he did not even seem like a newborn. Breastfeeding was tough as well. I was determined to exclusively breastfeed our son as my husband and I had decided together that this was the best start we could give him. For the first six weeks, it was very rough going, but with the support of my husband, we made it through. We did it! I felt so proud to be a nursing mom and went on to exclusively breastfeed for six months, starting our boy on homemade foods only. He thrived. What had seemed to start out a rocky road was now moving smoothly, and he nursed until he was 14 months when he weaned himself.

Sometime later, we decided to try for another baby, conceiving a girl this time! But I was petrified of the delivery. I kept thinking how hard the labor, delivery, and recovery was, and I was very scared. But this time, we found a midwife with more personalized care who helped me work though my fears, and I was ready this time. But do you remember I mentioned that birth plans rarely go as planned? Well, that was the case this time as well.

I was past my due date, and the fear of having a hospital induction was setting in. On my last visit to the midwife's office, three days past due, she was confident my time would be soon. As I drove myself home from the appointment, I felt light cramping but nothing I had not felt before. I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions for a while then. I stopped at the grocery store and bought my mom a cake for her birthday. We had an amazing dinner to celebrate.

After dinner, I called the midwife to tell her of my cramps, and she said to go for a brisk walk, so off we went. By the end of the walk, the cramps were getting worse, but they really were still quite mild. At 8:30 p.m., we took our son up to bed, and on the way up the stairs, I felt a little trickle. I wondered if my water had broken, but it was not like the first time, so I was unsure. After putting our son to bed, I called the midwife. She suggested a warm shower, and she would come over and check my progress. Then, I should get into bed and try to rest as it would probably be a long night. I still didn't believe I was in labor, though. I followed the midwife's suggestion and had a warm shower.

As I got out of the shower, my friend and support had arrived. I believed that labor had begun now. I knelt on all fours for contractions in my own room surrounded by a couple of friends and my husband. But I progressed very quickly, and before the midwife even arrived, my friends suspected that I had moved into transition. Labor was intense but still manageable. My friends became increasingly concerned that they would have to deliver a baby without the midwife, but she finally arrived. When she came up and saw me, she calmly switched into high gear... checking me only to find that I was almost ready to deliver. She sent somebody out to get her gear, but before she was even set up, I had started pushing. I couldn't help it... my body just did what it needed to. A few pushes later, our daughter was born unexpectedly at home - and on my mother's birthday, too! Thankfully, everything went smoothly, and I was feeling amazing! To this day, four years later, I still remember those moments as if they were yesterday!

While the endings were not all as I expected or even hoped, they have helped me to become who I am today, taught me to always find challenges that make me stronger, and empowered me to proudly succeed – just as I did that night four years ago.

What Are Pre-Finished Alphas

(Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS 10.5.8 - Leopard)

Pre-finished alphas are the decorative alphas in Scrap Girls collections, or they are sold as separate, ready-to-use units. With pre-finished alphas, you have an infinite number of design possibilities. You can make your own titles, mix and match alphas, create embellishments, and even use them for things like monograms to decorate your digital layouts.

Pre-Finished Alphas Tutorial Image 1
(Pre-finished alpha from the Circus On Parade Collection)

One of the best things about these alphas is that they are designed to match the collection that they are a part of. This makes coordinating a title to your page very easy. Of course, you are not limited to using a pre-finished alpha with the corresponding collection.

Let's start with page titles. Open a new document in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. To build the title, open the letters for your word or words and drag each letter into the document. If you have Photoshop, an easier way to make a title is to go to File> Scripts> Load Files into Stack. Browse and select the letters you are interested in from an alpha and click Open. This allows you to quickly load the letters you need into one file, so you don't have to open each letter individually. (This method will not allow you to load a letter twice. If you need, for example, more than one E, you can always copy that letter's layer by clicking on it and using Command+J.)

Alphas also come in sheets. To use this kind of pre-finished alpha, open the sheet, then use your Lasso Tool to select around the letter you need. After selecting the letter, click on the Move Tool and drag the letter to your layout.

Pre-Finished Alphas Tutorial Image 2
(Selecting letters in the File> Scripts> Load Files into Stack dialog box)

After you have loaded all your title letters, then you can start arranging them on your page the way you want. You can change their size, rotate them individually or as a group, overlap them, and add drop shadows for effect. How about mixing and matching different alphas for the words in a title or within a word itself for a really fun approach?

Pre-Finished Alphas Tutorial Image 3
(Mixed pre-finished alpha title, from Strawberry Jubilee and Cherries Jubilee collections)

Pre-finished alphas are not limited to page titles. You can create a monogram or enhance or create embellishments with them. Your only limitation with pre-finished alphas is your imagination!

Join us for an exciting game of August BINGO on the Scrap Girls Forum!! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day (Monday through Saturday), a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO.
