Life-weeds

Dandelions are the bane of existence for anyone who aspires to have the most beautiful lawn on the block. Oh, I know there are special weed-n-seed formulations you can put on your lawn to prevent them, but those miracle cures only work if you use them in a timely fashion.

This year, Utah was blessed to have snow fall almost every weekend during the prime dandelion-preventing season, and once the snow had stopped falling... well... Gary and I forgot all about dandelions. One very hot day in July, I realized that our front lawn was completely covered with them.

I tried to ignore the dandelions. (If I don't look, the dandelions won't exist.)

I tried to wish the dandelions away. (Tomorrow, I'll walk outside, and the dandelions will have magically disappeared.)

I tried to talk myself out of caring that I had dandelions in my yard. (I have more important things to worry about than weeding dandelions out of my lawn.)

But one day, as I cruised around my neighborhood, I spotted my 86-year-old friend walking around her yard removing weeds. I could tell that this was a regular, morning routine for her as there wasn't much for her to do. She's learned that it's easier to get rid of random dandelions when they appear than to dig out hundreds of dandelions when they are so plentiful that they threaten to eat your home.

Photo of garden tool.

When I got back home and I looked at the sorry state of my front lawn, I realized how out-of-control the weeds had become, and I knew that it was going to take a lot of hard, back-breaking, knee-straining, sweat-gumming-up-my-inner-elbows work to clear out my yard.

That night, as I considered the state of my lawn, it occurred to me that I often do the same thing with the life-weeds that clutter up my brain and bring me down. "How often to I allow myself to tolerate small thoughts of self-pity, self-incrimination, self-hate and the like?" I wondered. "What if I am allowing these thoughts to take over? And what would happen if I rooted them out as soon as they poked their ugly little heads out?"

Sneaky, snarky, silly
thoughts that whisper
streams of negativity
into your subconscious
mind.

I'm not good enough.
This is too hard.
I can't do this.
I want to quit.
I am picked on.
Why me?

Life-weeds.

Root them out before
they grow up,
blossom,
and blow their sticky
little selves all over
your lawn.

Tips from the Pros

Using Pictures in a Row

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Windows Vista

I love getting my three sons together for a photo. Of course, it is never just one photo! It can easily turn into 50 or 100 photos. (How does that happen?!) When I was looking for a shot to use for a digital scrapbooking layout, I enjoyed looking through all of the ones I took one afternoon. I decided that I would use several of them on the layout. I chose one to stand out and three others that I wanted to put in a row across the page.

Have you ever tried to put several items in a row on one of your digital scrapbook layouts? The first time I tried to do so, I used the Move Tool and my arrow keys to nudge things into what seemed like a straight line with even spaces. Since then, I've learned of a quicker, easier method.

First, click on the Move Tool. Then go to the Layers Palette and select the items to arrange. If they are listed together, click on the top one, and then hold the Shift key while you click on the bottom one. (Or vice versa.) This will select multiple layers at once. Or you can click on one then hold Ctrl while you click on each of the other layers that you want. You can see in the upcoming screenshot that I have three layers selected. You know a layer is selected when it's highlighted in blue (or dark gray in Photoshop Elements).

Next, click on "Align Vertical Centers" at the top of your window. I used three identical frames on my digital scrapbook layout. If you are using different-sized items, you can decide whether to align them by top edges, bottom edges, or vertical centers. Finally, click on "Distribute Horizontal Centers." This spaces the items evenly. Again, depending on the variety of items you are putting in a row, you may want to use one of the other distribution options.

Digital scrapbook layout tutorial screenshot: Align vertical centers.

These steps lined up and evenly spaced the three frames for my layout. After I inserted my pictures into the frames, I placed a ribbon behind them to "anchor" them together.

I hope these tips help you to try using pictures in a row on one of your digital scrapbook layouts!

But wait, there's more! In a new twist to the scavenger hunt game, on certain days you will be sent to the Scrap Girls Gallery to look for layouts using specific products or collections, and then post a link to your layout comment in the official game thread.

Three winners will be drawn from all the members who correctly identify a product or find Gallery layouts throughout the month. Each winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Good luck in your search!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Forum.
