Titles with Pizazz
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 7 with Windows 7
Sometimes, while I am looking through my photos, I find one of those pictures. You know, the kind that just yells its title at you. These are my favorite photos to make into digital scrapbooking layouts. When a title is just yelling at me from the photo, it often doesn't match any pre-made word art already in my stash. That's when I turn to my selection of fonts to create an amazing title with pizazz. Today, I'm going to show you how to make a title with pizazz.
First, find a photo that's yelling its title to you. My title for this layout will be "You Are My Sunshine." Select a word to emphasize by choosing a bold, thick font that looks good in all caps. I want to emphasize the word sunshine in my title. If your title is a single word, then emphasize that word and skip the next step. Next, choose a handwriting font for the other part of your title. Then size the two parts of the title and place them in your layout. When lining up multiple words, it helps to "hug them together" and place them so that nothing is cut off in a funny way. Notice how I placed the tails of the y (in you and my) in the spaces of the word below.
After you have your title sized and placed where you want it, duplicate the text layers and simplify them. You do this by right-clicking on the layer in the Layers Palette and selecting "Simplify Layer" (if you are using a version of Photoshop CS, this command is called "Rasterize Layer.") Turn off the original type layers by pressing the little eye icon next to the thumbnail in the Layers Palette. If you mess up in the next step, you can use this layer to start again.
Now, it's time for the fun to begin! First, take a good look at your title and see if there is anything that could be substituted for a letter. For my title, I realized that I could pun on the word SUN and make it SON, since the layout is about my son. But instead of just changing it to an O, I thought I might substitute something round that reminds me of a sun.
So now I need to remove the letter U. To remove a letter, use the Magnetic Lasso Tool in your tool bar and draw around the letter. You should have "marching ants" around the letter. If your marching ants don't surround the letter properly, hit Ctrl+D on your keyboard and try again. Make sure your marching ants don't contain any other letters on that layer. Now hit the Delete key on your keyboard.
The next step is to add your pizazz. Whenever I alter a title, I turn to my handy-dandy layer styles. They provide instant pizazz without the work! I wanted something with glitter for my main word.
Now, it's your turn to add some pizazz. Use a layer style to add some glitter to your title. If you have more than one part, use a different layer style to give it some dimension.
Next, it's time to add the finishing touches. Find the object to replace your letter and maybe some other embellishments to cluster around your title. I used a felt sunflower for the O and added a rhinestone brad on top for some sparkle. Then I found some glittery notes and added them to remind me of the song that my title comes from. Use other embellishments to help your title tell the story. You have now created a title with pizazz!

Dust off those thinking caps and hunting boots! We're having a Summer Scavenger Hunt, and you're invited! But wait, there's more! In a new twist to the scavenger hunt game, on certain days you will be sent to the Scrap Girls Gallery to look for layouts using specific products or collections, and then post a link to your layout comment in the official game thread.
Three winners will be drawn from all the members who correctly identify a product or find Gallery layouts throughout the month. Each winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Good luck in your search!
