A Day at the Beach
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7
Every year I take my family for a day at the beach during the third week in July. It has become quite a family tradition that we all look forward to. We go to the same beautiful beach at Broadstairs and have fun playing in the sun, sand, and the sea. I have literally hundreds of photos of the children playing at the seaside, and of course, I want to preserve these memories for years to come.
But it can be a struggle to document the photos of the children doing the same things, year after year, during our beach vacations without all the layouts appearing to be too similar.
It is possible, however, to create very unique and beautiful layouts. I have put together a few ideas to get you inspired to create some fantastic layouts about your beach vacations.
Focus on one aspect of the day at the beach, such as the children jumping over the waves, or building sandcastles - then create a page about this story. Choose a few well-picked photos rather than trying to include too many, which can overwhelm the page.
Document traditions associated with your beach vacation. Do you always go to the same place, stop at the same shop, eat a particular dish, or swim in the same location? Remember that the smallest details make the most cherished memories on a cold winter day when you look at the layout again.
Create a chronological layout documenting something you always do at the beach. I bet you have many photos over the years of sandcastles you and your children have built. Wouldn't it be fun to create a layout including them with a little journaling detailing the location, date, and who made each sandcastle?
Feature beach activities. Think about what you do on a beach (other than get a tan), such as reading, beach games, walking along the beach at sunset, or flying a kite, and include these topical activities in a layout.
Think about the amazing senses you experience on the beach... the feel of the sun on your skin, the smell of the salt air, the sounds of the seagulls. Document how you feel soaking up all of these wonderful aspects of the day at the beach.
Highlight the unique features of the beach. Do you have a favorite candy store, soda stand, or amusement arcade at the beach?
Tell the story from your child's perspective. What's your children’s favorite thing to do? My children always want to go and have a ride on the swing boats. Ask your children to help you document their favorite part of the day at the beach and create a layout from their perspective.
Feature your friends. What friends did you make during your beach vacation? Don't forget to include them in your memories.
Now that you are thinking about all the things you love about going to the beach, think about the next time you go to the beach and what different photos you might want to take. Often, when we repeatedly do the same thing or go to the same place and we may take the small things for granted. Photograph new or different things for your layouts that you will work on when you get home.
Also think about what milestones or very special moments you might want to document for your family. The first few times I took my son, Harley, to the beach, he was happy to play in the sand, but was reluctant to go anywhere near the water, so he sat watching the other children from a distance. This year when we went, he was still a little cautious at first, but after a couple of little baby steps in the water, he soon forgot all his inhibitions and had a wonderful time playing in the surf. I had to document the joy he found in jumping over the surf as the waves crashed on the beach.
When your next beach vacation comes along, think about the specific and special memories you want to preserve for years to come in your digital scrapbook layouts.
