Today's Special of the Day!

Wanted Collection
Wanted Collection

Save 30% off this Collection today only!

Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Jen Reed. In a short interview with Jen, she shared these comments with us...

"The Wanted Collection came out of my desire for a non-traditional Valentine collection. I used a color palette that would lend itself to scrapping boy valentine layouts - hearts without the pink. Ironically, I haven't used it much to scrap my son and instead have a ton of layouts of my girls. There are so many different patterned papers (I love patterns!) and I actually had a hard time stopping and ended up with 22 total coordinating papers. These papers are broken out over several coordinating products including the main collection and today's free paper sample."

1. What is currently playing on your iPod/radio?

Led Zeppelin

2. When designing a collection what do you start with first? Papers, embellishments, word art?

The very first thing I do when starting a collection is pick a theme and jot down ideas for the collection. From there, I'll come up with a palette and start designing a multi-color patterned paper and a multi-color stripe of some kind to check to see how my colors are working together. Lately I've been designing more random than ever before... I always start with some papers (again, the multi-color pattern and stripe come first), then I might get an idea for an alpha and I'll work on that, then do some embellishments, come back to the papers and add a few with the new embellishments, then add some solids, more embellishments, some word-art, etc. For the last few collections I've designed, I've found that my designing is flowing much better when I actually design non-linearly and hop around - design different things as the idea comes into my head instead of completing all the papers, then all the embellishments, etc.

Like a Penguin through Water

We slip in and out of this world.

Time passes so quickly, and yet

it moves too slowly for anxious, impatient souls

who long for tomorrow when things will be better,

who long for the time when all problems shall cease,

who long for the hour when discouragement is over,

who long for the time when they feel sweet release.

We slip into this world like a penguin through water -

back and through 'til at the end of our stay.

And standing between -

slipping in and back out -

is the time that we call today.

Tips From The Pros

Creating a Greeting Card

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows XP

I learned to create greeting cards long before I started scrapbooking. I used stamps with colored cardstock and would make several copies of the same cards so I always had extras on hand for last-minute occasions. Now that I make digital greeting cards, it is easy to print out another card whenever the need arises.

For this tutorial, I used items from the June ScrapSimple Club. You can create greeting cards using any digital scrapbooking supplies you may have.

To make your own card, start with a 4.25x5.5-inch image (1275x1500 pixels at 300 pixels per inch). This is a handy size that will fit in an A-2 envelope. Color the ScrapSimple papers and embellishments using techniques found in the 1 Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook (Free ScrapSimple basics eBook) and add them to your card, resizing as needed. I decorated my greeting card with flowers, charms, stitching, journaling paper, and a touch of ribbon. I found that applying a style from the Design Pack: Inked Text to the ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Painted Stencil letters gave them a hand-stamped look. The spiral clip was made by erasing the base of a photo holder from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Handmade Boxes.

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Apply style to alpha template letters.

When your greeting card front is complete, it is time to print it. Sometimes I just print and trim the image for the front of the card and adhere it to a folded half-sheet of cardstock; however, I like the backs of my cards to be almost as pretty as the front, so I add digital paper to the back before printing.

In order to print your card with a decorative back, you will need to expand your canvas. Go to Image> Canvas Size and double the width of your canvas for a side-fold card or double the height of your canvas for a top-fold card. In the Canvas Size pop-up, there is also an Anchor grid that allows you to choose where to add the additional canvas in relation to your existing card. Anchor a top-fold card to the bottom-center and anchor a side-fold card to the right center.

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Increase Canvas Size.

After you have enlarged your canvas, duplicate the background layer(s) and move them to the blank half of the card. Now your greeting card is ready to print!

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Duplicate background and move to the other half of the card.

After your card is printed, just trim and fold it. I used distressing ink on the edges to cover where I didn't cut it perfectly. You can use these basic instructions to make a greeting card for any occasion.
