Using 12x12 Supplies to Make 8.5x11 Layouts
Note: Tutorial was created using Adobe Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP.
If you've ever noticed that the standard dimensions of scrapbooking paper are 12x12 inches, and not 8.5x11 inches like most standard papers, then you're not alone. I'm not positive why scrapbooking paper is set at this default length and width, but my guess is that it allows the scrapbooker (you!) to decide whether you want to use the pattern horizontally or vertically.
However, there are benefits to scrapbooking in letter size. These benefits include the ability to print layouts from home using a standard desktop printer and the wide availability of letter-size sheet protectors, photo albums, and picture frames.
In this tutorial, you'll find out how easy it is to use standard 12x12-inch digital scrapbooking supplies to make 8.5x11-inch layouts.
If you like to start a layout by using a paper from a kit as your background, open the paper in your graphics program. Here's a paper from Life's Canvas Collection Biggie.
Let's say you want to use this paper in a horizontal letter layout (11 inches wide and 8.5 inches in height), and you want to keep as much of the details on the edge as possible. First, you will need to reduce the width from 12 inches to 11 inches.
Go to Image on the top tool bar and select "Image Size" from the drop-down window. In the Image Size window, make sure the box for "Constrain Proportions" is checked. Then change the width from 12 inches to 11 inches. This will also change the height proportionally. (Note: You will not need to follow this step if you choose a paper with an all-over pattern or if you don't mind cropping accents off the paper's edges.)
Now you need to crop the paper's width from 11 inches to 8.5 inches. To do this, go to Image again, but this time, select "Canvas Size." In the Canvas Size window, change the height from 11 inches to 8.5 inches. Choose which part of the canvas you want to be the anchor. In this case, the top of the paper will be retained and the bottom will be cropped.
This is what your paper looks like after it has been resized to 8.5x11 inches. It is now ready to use in your next digital scrapbooking layout!
To make digital scrapbooking in letter-size even easier, you can choose backgrounds that have all-over patterns (which allows you to skip the Image Size step) or use ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates, which usually include easy-to-follow templates for both 12x12 inches and 8.5x11 inches layouts.
