One Day At A Time
At the beginning of this year, I had this strong feeling that I needed to make a change in my life. One thing I was never happy with was the way I felt about myself and the way I looked physically. I've spent so much of my life making sure that everyone else was taken care of and had what they wanted and needed that I forgot about doing the same for me. I let things get out of control. So I decided that 2011 was going to be all about me.
Normally when I get this type of urge, I always think to myself, “I'll start on Monday” and never do, but this time I decided there was no better time than the present. So on January 2nd, I started my journey to a healthier me.
I knew I didn't want to sabotage myself, so I started off simple. I cut out any and all sugars (no more picking up a candy bar in the grocery store checkout line) and cut back on what I was eating. Other than sugar, I didn't limit myself to certain types of food, I just had less, hoping this would help with the craving and binging that had ruined my plan so many times in the past.
Another big change I made is I started walking on the treadmill. I would get up every morning, get dressed to work-out before I even left my room, and then start my day. So when I got a few moments to myself, I didn't have the excuse of not being dressed for a workout. I just went straight downstairs and walked. To begin with, I was lucky to get a half mile in before I was just too tired, but soon I was up to 2-3 miles a day.
The next thing I knew, the first month had passed, and the little changes I had made started to become habit - and I had lost 23 pounds! It made me realize I could do it this time.
Over the next several months, I slowly added in more exercise and became stricter on my eating habits. Now I walk five miles a day at least five days a week (on the other two days, I usually get a short 2-3-mile walk), and thanks to the latest 30-day challenge on the Scrap Girls Message Board, I've also added in 20 minutes of cardio and 20 minutes of strength training to my day. As I write this, I have officially hit the 70-pound mark a little over five months after I started.
The changes I have noticed are amazing. Not only the physical ones (while it is great to be able to pass down all my old pants because they no longer fit and the new ones I’ve bought to replace them are now getting loose), but the energy I have and how I feel every morning when I get up are amazing.
It's also great to see that the habits and choices I've made are being passed down to my kids. We now work-out together almost every day. I see my sons making better choices in the foods they select to eat. Since school got out about four weeks ago, both my boys have each lost eight pounds, and they have informed me that they want to run in a children's fund-raising marathon in October.
So while it hasn't been an easy journey, and I've had my ups and downs since the first of the year, the one thing I keep reminding myself is to take it one day at a time and don't get frustrated. It's a slow process, but I feel like I am learning alot about myself during this journey - and it's one I'm glad I'm taking!

Commercial license versions of Everyday Moments Collection Biggie are also available.
It's always so hard for me to pick a favorite product that I've designed. I think my latest favorite is my
Everyday Moments Collection. I love the colors and patterns in this collection and how versatile they are.

Online Class Round Up
Once a month, we share with you the details of a recent digital scrapbooking class that has been held at Scrap Girls. I’d like to share with you about a popular class by Mary Elizabeth O’Toole called Unmasking Layer Masks for Photoshop.
Online Class – Unmasking Layer Masks for Photoshop
Instructor: Mary Elizabeth O’Toole
Regardless of skill level, every digital scrapbooker can appreciate the functionality and variability of layer masks. They allow for non-destructive editing and designing in Photoshop, so if you’re unfamiliar with layer masks, you’ll want to make a point of learning about them sooner rather than later. The Unmasking Layer Masks for Photoshop online class was the perfect opportunity for digital scrapbookers to learn about the magical powers of layer masks and how to harness those powers for attracting attention within digital scrapbooking layouts.
Using various methods, this class taught students how to create, copy, and edit layer masks. The learning didn’t stop there, though. Students went on to learn basics for masking away distracting or uneven photo edges, transforming images within masks, and changing the size and shape of layer masks. Weekly homework assignments tackled topics such as how to correct photograph exposure, as well as different masking methods for adding variety to brushes and custom embellishments.
This class was held in our most popular method of two Chat Room class sessions. Students received class materials with step-by-step PDF instructions, including screenshots to make it easy for following along. As with all our classes, there was a private class gallery set up for students where they could post their before-and-after work and receive feedback. There was also a private class forum for the students to ask questions and share information, which was another excellent way for students to further interact with Mary Elizabeth. At the end of each class session, students received a transcript of the class chat.
I’ve chosen two class layouts to share with you. This layout by joanie318 is from Mary Elizabeth’s Week One homework assignment:

This layout by princessrunningfingers is also from Mary Elizabeth’s Week One homework assignment:

Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fantastic Frames and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Basic Shadows 6501 are also available.
The Unmasking Layer Masks for Photoshop class was already held; however, we do repeat classes. Be sure to keep watch on our Online Class section of the Boutique to find future class offerings to help you expand your digital scrapbooking skills.

A member of the Welcoming Committee will post a mini-challenge or task each day Monday through Saturday from June 1st - 30th.
