Geocaching
Last summer, our family discovered geocaching. What fun! While on vacation in a cabin in the Utah mountains, we borrowed Papa's GPS unit from his truck, found some cache locations in the surrounding woods from the Internet, hopped on the four wheelers and set off on our first treasure-seeking adventure.
The first container we found was a melted mayo jar that had the tragic misfortune of being located in a small, controlled burn area in the forest some weeks earlier. No treasure. At the second location, we found an old plastic bag with a broken flashlight and a few other random items... no real treasure. The third one, we never found.
Although we didn't have much success at finding treasure, we never heard the end of it! "Can we keep Papa's GPS unit? When can we go hunting again? How do we look up coordinates?" The boys fell in love with the hunt. So, after many long months, Dad got a GPS unit for Christmas, and a couple weeks later, we were looking up coordinates around our neighborhood, and setting off on our bikes.
I have discovered that geocaching really is about the thrill of the hunt and not particularly the treasure that you find at the end. But it sure is a fun way to spend an afternoon together as a family. Aside from the expense of the GPS unit, it provides inexpensive thrills, plus it helps burn off lots of energy that our little boys have in excess.

Favorite Product I've designed:
Vigor and Vim Collection Biggie
This collection is somewhat inspired by all of the vigor and vim that exists around me in the bodies of my boys. They are tirelessly full of energy, and since we live in a city, we are always looking for ways that they can burn it off. Although my boys are rough-and-tumble, audacious, and spirited, I still enjoy having a civilized existence (whenever possible). This collection attempts to combine both of those qualities - paper and embellishments that lend themselves to masculine energy, but are still calm and relaxing and pleasant to look at.

Using Prefinished Embellishments
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 4.0 on a PC running Windows 7.
Many people new to digital scrapbooking ask, "What are embellishments?" And I usually answer with one word, "Curtains!"
Okay, I know it sounds crazy, but they do function like curtains for three main reasons. First, curtains can help establish the color of a room by matching your couch or your bedspread. Also, curtains can help reinforce the theme of a room, like having ruffled gingham curtains in a country kitchen. Lastly, curtains can help soften a room's hard linear edges and make it seem cozy. Well, embellishments do exactly the same things! Let's take a look and see how it works.
First, create a new 12x12-inch layout at 300 dpi (dots per inch). Pull in (click and drag) a background paper and photo you want to use. I opened a paper from Angela Blanchard's Fab 5 and a photograph I took of a bird gathering nesting material.
Now comes the fun part... picking out the curtains! Choose a frame embellishment that matches a color in the photograph. I pulled a frame from the Floral Abundance Collection and made it black. This helps to establish your accent color, so now your curtains match the bedspread, so to speak!
Now look for an embellishment that reinforces your theme. I found a bird that looked like the one in the photo, but it could have been any bird, a bird's nest, or a birdhouse. This is really coming together fast!
The last hunt is for some curtains that will soften the linear lines of the room and make it warm, cozy, and full. I have used a few branches from the Feathered Friends Collection, and positioned them to break up the hard straight lines of the frame, but I could have used some flowers, swirls, or another bird to accomplish the same thing.
With just these few embellishments, you've got a great layout that really enhances the photo and the story you want to tell. If you want, add a title, some journaling or drop shadows, and your room will be ready for guests to admire. Oops! I mean your layout will be ready for friends to admire!
