Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. When you think about using shadows as an element in photography, you might immediately think about those beautiful artsy photos with long shadows and soft light. You know, those photos taken during the "magic hours" around sunrise and sunset.
Shooting photos during the middle part of the day can pose some challenges - I've even heard photographers call midday the "ugly hours." The light can be harsh and cause a lot of contrast. But you can use this to your advantage and get some interesting photos in the middle of the day too! Check out these examples.
This photo, taken in the noonday sun, makes an ordinary wood post looks very interesting. The sun casts shadows directly beneath the splinters, highly accentuating them.
And in this photo, the sun is directly above the arbor. See how it casts a lovely latticework of shadows on the floor. The contrast of light and dark is visually striking.
At lunchtime recently, I went to our local community park for a photo walk, looking for shadows. It's spring, so the sun is not at its zenith, but it was shining brightly. I was particularly fascinated by the shadows cast on a bridge. I composed my shot by getting low to the ground. Then I moved to the side because I wanted the shot to be a bit asymmetrical. With just the automatic settings on my camera, I took my shot.
I encourage you to notice shadows, even in the middle of the day. You're sure to find some photo magic, too!

Ways to use ScrapSimple Paper Templates: All about Edges
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows Vista
This tutorial is to show you some different ways you can use ScrapSimple Paper Templates: All About Edges. I have added edges to a couple of different layouts applying textures, brushes, blending modes and using clipping masks to add a variety of looks to your layouts.
Here is a layout from Syndee Nuckles' JIFFY Easy Page Album: 12x12 Memento. I love the layout, but want to add my own touches, so I chose to use my ScrapSimple Paper Templates: All About Edges Vol. 2. Use the Eyedropper Tool to choose a color in the layout. Create a new layer in your Layers Palette and clip it to the edges (Ctrl+G for Photoshop Elements; Ctrl+Alt+G for Photoshop).
Now you can use your Blending Modes to achieve a variety of looks. I changed the Blending Mode to "Darken" and reduced the Opacity to 60%. Feel free to play with the Blending Modes until you reach your desired look. Then I selected the "Bevel and Emboss" layer style and added a texture to give it even more dimension.
Here is the finished layout:
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Paper Templates: All About Edges Vol.2 are also available.
Now, to take it even a step further, we are going to use a brush to add even more to your edges. Do all of the above steps and then select your Brush Tool. Choose the brushes you would like to use. I have selected to use one of my brushes from Brush Set: Musical Grunge - Biggie. Create a new layer in the Layers Palette and begin stamping it around the edges. Once you are finished, clip your layer to your edges layers. From here, you can adjust the Opacity and play with the levels to see if there is one that may work better for your background. Feel free to duplicate the layers and continue adjusting Blending Modes. Once you have reached the desired look, merge the layers together.
Your imagination is your only limitation, so have fun!
