Creating a Hybrid Father's Day Card
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Microsoft Vista
A hybrid scrapbooking project involves using digital scrapbooking elements along with traditional paper-crafting techniques. I used to avoid hybrid projects, convinced that it was something only for the truly crafty. Luckily, I was wrong!
The key is to let your digital supplies do most of the work for you. So if you're shaking in your hybrid boots like I used to do, don't worry! By the end of this tutorial, you'll be creating a hybrid Father's Day card that's really quite easy.
Here's a list of the supplies you'll need:
We're going to build our cards digitally. We'll create a front panel, an embellishment cluster, and the sentiment. Let's start with the front panel.
First, create a new document with these settings – 5.5-inch width, 4.25-inch length, 300 pixels/inch resolution, background – white.
Next, use the Rectangle Tool (U) to create a slightly smaller rectangle. You may fill this rectangle with color or use a clipping mask (Alt+Ctrl+G in Photoshop; Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements) with a patterned paper of your choice. Ta da! You've created your front panel! That was easy, right?
Now it's time to create an embellishment cluster. Search through your supplies for items like journaling tags, circles, stars, etc; this will be the base of your cluster. I prefer to use simple shapes that are easy to cut out. Once you have selected your base, you can add other embellishments. This is where I like to get creative. You can add swirly brush strokes, glitter, flowers, bead scatters, or anything else you desire. No worries about fussy cutting - you'll only have to cut out the base of your cluster.
Last but not least, let's focus on the sentiment. Again, we're going to use the Rectangle Tool. This time, draw a long thin box. As before, you can fill it with color or clip a paper to it. Next, select the Type Tool and click inside the box you've just created and type your sentiment in the font of your choice. Since this is a hybrid Father's Day card, I'm going to use Happy Father's Day.
Now that we've finished building our card, it's time to prepare the card for printing. Create a new 8.5x11-inch document with a white background. If you wish to have a single layer card, save your card panel as a JPG file in order to flatten the layers. Then, place the card on your new document and print. However, if you'd like to have multiple layers, you'll need to deconstruct your digital card. You'll simply drag each layer of your card to the new document. Make sure to leave enough space around each item so you'll have room to cut.
Okay, now we're ready for the hybrid part of our project! Print and cut out the individual pieces, and then adhere the pieces to your card base.
Sit back and pat yourself on the back! You have created a hybrid Father's Day card!

Using 12x12 Digital Scrapbooking Supplies to Create 8x10 Layouts
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 and Mac OS X
Whether you currently create your layouts using a 12x12-inch format or an 8.5x11-inch format, there may be times when you would like to frame a layout for a gift or to display in your own home. You may have a standard-size frame you already own or you may have nabbed this common size frame at a great sale.
Today, I'm going to show you just how easy it is to use your 12x12-inch digital scrapbooking supplies to create an 8x10-inch layout suitable for framing.
There are several ways of accomplishing this. One way would be to change the size of each paper and element before placing it on your layout. Now, I love digital scrapbooking for many reasons. Several of these reasons include speed, the ability to make changes easily, and the cost savings. We are going to put all of these reasons to the test during this tutorial!
The first thing I do is create a 12x12-inch layout. I have found that if I do this, I can adjust the layout to any size at a later time. Follow along and create your own 12x12-inch layout or use one you have previously made. Here's mine:
After you have your layout created and saved, open up a new document with an image size of 8x10 inches. Use the shortcut Ctrl+N (Cmd+N for Macs) to bring up the New Document Window. Fill in the new dimensions. If you would like, feel free to make your new layout a width of 10 inches and a height of 8 inches.
Now, return to your original 12x12-inch layout. In the Layers Palette, highlight all the layers except the background (or bottom) layer. If you happen to have a lot of layers, here is an easy shortcut. Choose (highlight) the top layer of your layout. Now, hold the Shift key down while clicking on the layer above your background. Voila! You will see all the layers (except the bottom layer) highlighted. Drag the layers to your blank 8x10-inch document.
Yikes! It doesn't fit, right? Not to worry! Now we are going to fix it "quickly and easily." Ah, some of my favorite words!
We are going to use the Transform Tool to decrease the size of all the layers at once by using the shortcut Ctrl+T (Cmd+T). Uh-oh! You can't see the edges of the layers because they extend beyond the image size, and you aren't able to use the handles to change the size.
Use the shortcut Ctrl+Minus key (Cmd+Minus key). You will see your image get smaller. Do this one more time. Next, hover your cursor over the bottom right corner of your window. You should see a double-ended arrow. Drag the window out until you see the entire Transform box showing. This is what you should see:
Use one of the corner anchor squares to resize all the layers simultaneously. Be sure to hold down the Shift key while doing this to maintain the proportions. All of the layers should still be highlighted in the Layers Palette. Use the Move Tool to shift them into place. Play around a bit until you find what you like. Remember, you are going from a square layout to a rectangular layout. That will probably result in positioning it differently.
Finally, go back to your 12x12-inch layout and drag your background paper (the bottom layer) onto your new 8x10-inch layout. Move it to the bottom layer and resize it to fit your layout. You're all done!
How easy and cool was that?! Now you have your original 12x12-inch digital scrapbooking layout, and you have created the same layout in another size that's perfect for gift giving. This particular layout will be great for framing and hanging on the bedroom wall of a little girl's room. What a fun and very grown-up gift for these three girlfriends to receive.
So, when you're in need of a quick gift, look back at one of your 12x12-inch layouts and make some easy changes to create an inexpensive gift for special someone.
Below is my final 8x10-inch digital scrapbooking layout. I think the girls are going to love it!
