Daily System: Using a Notebook to Jot Down Ideas and Memories
How many times have your found yourself trying to remember an idea you had as you were trying to fall asleep? Did your two-year-old say something so funny that you laughed until you cried - but later you couldn't remember what it was? I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me!
Since I depend on my creativity to support my family, I knew I had to create a system to record my ideas, memories, inspiration, and thoughts. It was also very important that it be simple enough for me to keep up.
I find the easiest way for me to do this is to keep a notebook close by. I have two notebooks: A small one I keep in my purse and a medium-sized one I keep next to my bed. The medium-sized notebook tends to travel all over the house with me so I can jot down an idea or memory as it happens. This might take a little getting used to, but in no time it will become second nature.
To get started, choose a notebook that is portable and fits your style. You might want to pick out one that is eye-catching so it's easy to spot. Or you can buy a plain one and decorate the cover yourself. Think of all your digital scrapbooking goodies and what cute covers you can create!
Something else you might find helpful is to keep your notebook organized. You could do this by dating each entry or numbering the pages. Find what works for you and carve out a few minutes each day to jot down anything noteworthy for that day. It's amazing what you can write down in as little as five minutes.
Something so simple can have such a positive impact on your life. Just by writing down these things, it can de-clutter and de-stress your mind. You will feel a sense of relief knowing that your ideas and memories are tucked away in your notebook.
Here are some additional ideas you might want to include in your notebook:
Scrapbook page ideas and sketches
Recipes to try
There are so many ways to make it your own and to have fun doing it! I love to look back through all my notes and ideas. Sometimes I get a good laugh out of it, and sometimes I even shed a tear or two.
I bet you already have a few ideas bubbling… so now you know how to keep track of these ideas and memories in an easy-to-use system!

Story Time: Nathan at 8 Months
Tutorial created using PSCS5 with Windows Vista
How is my baby growing so quickly? If you have children, I'm sure you've wondered something similar at times. I took some pictures of Nathan in the middle of his eighth month. Well, I've taken pictures all throughout his eighth month, but I was referring to a particular set. As I was looking at them, I decided to do a layout that included bits of information about Nathan at this stage of his life.
In keeping with the idea of Nathan being eight months old, I chose to make "8 Months" the title. I wanted to find an 8 in my alpha sets. I know that there are numerous ways to organize your files and find items.
I have a decent memory of my digital scrapbooking supplies, but I'll often let Windows Vista find files for me. I clicked on the Windows Start> Pictures> Scrap Girls - that's where I keep my digital scrapbooking supplies.
Then I typed in what I was looking for in the Search spot. I know that many of the alpha sets are named a particular way. (If I had not found what I wanted, then I might have broadened the search.) I typed alpha-8 in the Search and browsed through the results. Then I spotted the perfect 8 for my layout! All I had to do was drag that file to my opened layout in PSCS5.
Since I liked the 8 from Earthen Vessel Collection Biggie so much, I decided to use alphas from that collection for the word Months as well. I wanted one more 8 on the layout just for emphasis, so I looked through the Search results again and found another perfect one.
I decided to list eight things about Nathan. It probably isn't hard to miss the "8" theme going on, right? That actually was harder than I thought it would be. I just might have to make a companion layout so I can extend the list! I suppose it could be "8 More Things."
If you have a story to tell and a number is an important part of it, try including the number in your title. You probably have numerous alpha sets in your digital scrapbooking supplies.
Commercial license versions of Bamboozled Collection Biggie, Cocoa Couture Collection Mini and ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Deep Shadows 6501 PSE and PS Biggie are also available.

One Technique I Used on This Layout: Using a Brush as a Clipping Mask
Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 with Windows 7
No doubt you've heard this phrase countless times, "It's easy once you know how to do it" - especially when it comes to digital scrapbooking techniques. I hear it all the time about using clipping masks in your layouts. Today, I'm going to go over how to use a brush as a clipping mask.
When I created this layout, I liked the black background, but it was a little too much black to suit my taste. To remedy this, I "stamped" Brush Set: Junk in the Trunk on its own layer and clipped a gold paper from Classical Music Collection Biggie to it. Here's how you can do the same thing:
First, create a new layer above your background paper. Do this by clicking Create New Layer at the bottom left of your Layers Palette. This extra step, when using a brush, is very important. Your brush must be on its own layer to use it as a clipping mask!
Next, load your brush. Click on the Brush Tool in your Tools Palette. Click the down arrow next to the Brush Presets window at the top. Click Load Brushes. Navigate to where your brush is kept, then double-click on the ABR (.abr) file.
Next, select your brush by clicking the small icon in the brushes window. Your cursor will now appear in the shape of the brush.
Hover over the area where you want your mask to be and left-click to "stamp" it on to your new layer. It doesn't matter what color it is.
Next, bring in a paper and position it on a layer above your brush layer. With the new paper layer active (click on it), hit Ctrl+G on your keyboard (hold the Ctrl key down and then hit the G key).
There! You've used a brush as a clipping mask! Once you master this technique, you'll be the one saying, "It's easy once you know how to do it!"
Commercial license versions of Families Are Forever Collection, Classical Music Collection Biggie, Brush Set: Junk in the Trunk, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Music 6301 and ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Mini Clusters are also available.
