Unusual Ways to Use a Frame in a Layout

Note: Article written using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7

There are dozens and dozens of varieties of frames in the Scrap Girls Boutique - just waiting for you to try one on for size. When you buy a collection or a collection mini, you will usually acquire a few new frames that fit the style of the collection.

But do you ever try to think outside the box with the frames that you get in your digital scrapbooking kits? Frames are pretty basic to use. Put a photo on the page, surround your photo with a frame, and add some embellishments. Thinking outside the box with your frames is another story altogether. What are some things that can be done with frames in creating a layout? Here are some things I thought of:

  • Frame your page with a frame

  • Framing embellishments

  • Re-color a frame

  • Cluster a grouping of frames together

  • Create a frame with journaling

  • Use patterned paper on the outside of your layout, to create a "border" for your layout. If you are ever in doubt if your layout looks finished, I suggest trying a thin border around the edge - you will be amazed at the results!

In the following layout, I used a photo to frame another photo (which is then framed by a square of digi-metal). I used a black-and-white photo of my daughter to frame the photo simply by creating a square using the standard shapes in Adobe Photoshop. Find this particular shape by clicking on the Shape Tool. After you click on it, the shape menu will appear. Click on the Custom Shape Tool and several shapes will appear, along with an arrow on the right of the box. When the drop-down menu appears, click on Shapes, and select the outlined square shape.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Custom Shape Tool menu in Photoshop.

After you draw your square on your layout, bring in your photo. Position your photo in the layer directly above your square, and create a layer mask (Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements; Ctrl+Shift+G in Photoshop CS). Your photo will clip to your shape, and you can then position your photo.

This is a fun way to put an extra photo in your layout. After you get your photo looking the way you'd like, this is a great time to add styles and play with your new frame. I added a blue stroke around the edge, a drop shadow, and a tiny bit of outer glow to help make my frame pop.

Notice other ways I used frames in this layout:

  • A layout border with patterned paper

  • A stitched border

  • A photo as a frame

  • A thin frame with a metal style around the face in the center photo

  • A lifted frame, with a shadow around the photo

Have some fun with your frames - and think outside the box!

Tips From The Pros

How to Color ScrapSimple Embellishments with Gradients

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop Elements 7 with Windows Vista

Recoloring an object in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements is quick and easy when using a new color fill layer and changing the mode of that layer.

Note: If you haven't tried this technique, you can learn more about it in 1 Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook (Free ScrapSimple basics eBook).

But have you ever seen an object, such as a flower, colored with multiple colors and wondered how they did that? Today I'll show you a quick way to achieve this look.

We will start out with a flower template from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: In Bloom 4.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Open embellishment template.

Next, choose Layer> New Fill Layer> Gradient.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Add a Gradient Fill layer.

Once you choose this, click "OK." Another screen will come up and this is where you can customize your gradient layer. First, choose what type you'd like.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Select a gradient.

Each selection has a different number of colors, and the way the colors bleed into each one is different. For items such as this, I usually start with the very first option. This gives you a nice two-tone effect and the softest blend between colors.

Next, choose your style. For items such as flowers, I generally choose the "Radial" style. This puts your colors in a circle, helping you achieve the look of a flower with different color middle and tips. I have also clicked on the box next to "Reverse" so that the lighter color is in the middle.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Select gradient style and alignment.

Once you have done this, now use your clipping mask to mask that gradient layer to your flower. By masking it to the flower, you will be able to see how the new colors will sit on that flower.

Next comes the fun part - coloring your flower. Once you have created your mask, double-click on the Gradient Icon in the Layers Palette.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Click on the gradient.

Then, click on the colored square next to the term Gradient.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Customize the gradient.

Now there are a couple of different things you can change. First, you can change your color stops. By clicking on the color stop (which is the small box under the arrow along the slider), you will activate the Color Picker Tool. This tool works just like the Eye Dropper Tool which allows you to choose the color you'd like.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Color stops of a gradient.

The next thing you can adjust is the size of the color. If you click on the color stop arrow under the gradient slider and hold down the mouse, you can move that arrow to the right or left. Moving the arrow makes that portion of the color take up more or less space on the flower. Below, you'll see an example of moving the arrow on the bottom right over to the left, making that center white portion larger.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Move the color stop to change gradient.

Once you've got your color where you want it, then adjust the Blend Mode of the gradient layer to see your finished flower, just like you would do with a new color fill layer.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Adjust Blend Mode of gradient layer.

I hope you grabbed a few tips from this introduction to coloring ScrapSimple items with gradients. I can't wait to see all the layouts with your newly recolored items pop up in the Scrap Girls Gallery!
