Scrap Girls is looking for qualified digital scrapbooking teachers to teach Photoshop and Photoshop Elements classes. Teachers will be required to create class PDFs that will be reviewed prior to class. Teachers have complete flexibility in scheduling classes.
Candidates must have strong skills in Photoshop and/or Photoshop Elements and exhibit strong layout design skills. Knowledge of both programs is a plus. They must be warm and friendly, comfortably handle fast-paced chat room situations, and be able to easily answer questions that arise regarding their particular software area of expertise.
Candidates will be required to audition for this paid position. There will be a list of topics available from which classes can be developed; however, the teachers are encouraged to present their own ideas for approval as well.
Please contact Katherine Weaver at [email protected] for more details. If you are interested in applying, please forward to Katherine an up-to-date resume as well as a sample tutorial you have written. Application deadline is Tuesday, May 31, 2011.
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

How to Remove Red-Eye with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 on Windows XP
We've all taken them. Those dreaded red-eye photos that make our sweet little angels look like raging demons. What causes this instantaneous transformation and how can we get rid of it?
Red eye in photos is caused by a reflection of the flash off the subject's retina. It can be avoided by choosing a location with more light, by using the red-eye reduction mode on your camera, or by using a flash that is farther away from the lens. But if you find that you didn't do any of those things and now have a photo with lots of red-eye, don't fret. In both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, red eye is easy to fix.
First, select the Red Eye Tool. It is located in the same spot as the Healing Brush Tool. Right click on the tool to see the other options.
Zoom in to the eye area of your photo and click in the red area of the eye. Like magic, the red eye is gone! In most cases, it's that simple. If you are not satisfied with the look of the correction, undo (Ctrl+Z) and adjust the "Pupil Size" and/or the "Darken Amount" percentages in the Options bar at the top of the screen. The default setting for both options is 50%. Adjusting the "Pupil Size" percentage will increase or decrease the area affected by the Red Eye Tool. Changing the "Darken Amount" will set the darkness of the correction.
In less than a minute, my photo is fixed and ready to use in a digital scrapbooking page!
Commercial license versions of Legacy Collection Biggie, ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Blessings, ScrapSimple Paper Templates: On the Edge 2 and Design Pack: Inked Text are also available.

Creating Creative Layouts Using Imperfect Photos
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows XP
Even if you're new to digital scrapbooking, you probably already know the basis for a great digital scrapbooking layout starts with a great photo or focal point.
So here's a question, "Is a great photo always defined by its lack of imperfection?" Depending on who you ask, you'll get different answers, but I'll always tell you that's not the case - especially pertaining to digital scrapbooking. In fact, that single question was my driving impetus for writing the Creative Solutions for Less-Than-Perfect Photos eBook for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.
In a perfect world all the photos we've created and collected over the years would be free from flaws, right? However, you and I know there's no such place, and our hard drives, albums, and storage containers teem with images boasting the full gamut of imperfection.
How can we ditch a 50-year old photograph of Grandfather Otto because it's blurry? Sure, it's not the best quality, but looking beyond the blur, we recognize a story eager to be told. And why should we trash a baby photo just because our sweet little one's facial expression is anything but angelic? Stop! Don't throw away images just because they're flawed. When better versions of imperfect photo aren't available to act as substitutes, think of creative ways to overcome those flaws. Less-than-perfect images can make great focal points in a digital scrapbooking layout.
As featured in my Creative Solutions for Less-Than-Perfect Photos eBooks, imperfect photos typically fall into five categories: blur, discoloration, noise, subject is off-center, or the subject is too far away.
One of my favorite ways of drawing attention to a subject that's too far away is to use the color-blocking technique. This technique also works great for photos with busy or distracting backgrounds. Here's how to use color-blocking on your own photos:
First, open an image in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. Enlarge and position the image as desired on your layout.
In the Layers Palette, rename the original photo layer as "Color." Duplicate the image and rename this new layer as "Black and White." Using your favorite ScrapSimple Tools product, convert the duplicate image to black and white (or sepia).
Place a frame around the area of the photo you'd like as the focal point of your digital scrapbooking layout.
Make sure the black-and-white layer is selected in the Layers Palette. Use the Eraser Tool (Ctrl+E for PC; Cmd+E for Mac) to erase the black-and-white image area inside the frame. This will allow the color photo beneath to show through.
Cluster additional frames, if desired, then add a drop shadow and slight bevel to each frame for depth and realism.
Just five easy steps to fine-tune the focal point of a busy photograph! For more design-based photo fixes, check out the Creative Solutions for Less-Than-Perfect Images eBook for Photoshop Elements or Creative Solutions for Less-Than-Perfect Images eBook for Photoshop.

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!
Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.
To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.
