Candidates must have strong skills in Photoshop and/or Photoshop Elements and exhibit strong layout design skills. Knowledge of both programs is a plus. They must be warm and friendly, comfortably handle fast-paced chat room situations, and be able to easily answer questions that arise regarding their particular software area of expertise.
Candidates will be required to audition for this paid position. There will be a list of topics available from which classes can be developed; however, the teachers are encouraged to present their own ideas for approval as well.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Creating a Focal Point Using Trim
Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows Vista
If papers and photos make up the cake of digital scrapbooking, then trim is definitely the icing on that cake! Trim is a collective term for ribbon, rickrack, buttons, lace, and other ornamental embellishments. I love using all of these things on my layouts. Today, I'm going to show you how you can create a focal point on your layout using trim.
First, we need to create the "cake." I've opened a few photos and papers and put them on a new 12x12-inch canvas. Since we'll be using embellishments like ribbons and buttons, let's create a pocket to anchor them. Creating a digital pocket is easy! All you need is the Marquee Tool.
First, draw a rectangle with the Rectangular Marquee Tool to create the base of the pocket. Then, create a new layer, and using the Paint Bucket tool, click inside the "marching ants" to fill the square (it doesn't matter what color you choose since we'll be covering it with a paper later).
Next, use the Elliptical Marquee Tool to draw a circle. Position it so that the bottom part of the circle overlaps the top portion of the pocket base. Next, press Delete. Now, we've created a notch to make the pocket more realistic. Press Ctrl+D to de-select or get rid of the marching ants. Now, you can clip a patterned paper to the pocket and "stuff" it with photos.
Now that we have our cake, it's time for the icing - the trim! There are so many fun ways you can use trim to dress up your photo pocket. Here's one way to incorporate trim in your layouts: Wrap it with a ribbon and tie it with a bow.
Usually, ribbons are designed to span a 12-inch canvas, so you'll need to erase the portions of the ribbon that extend beyond the pocket. To create the illusion that the ribbon wraps around the photo, use the Burn Tool to darken the edges of the ribbon. Then use the Dodge Tool to create a highlight.
Finally, let's add some stitching to "sew" the pocket onto the layout. Some kits have stitching included as an embellishment. However, if the kit you're using doesn't include stitching, you can use a brush set like Dynamic Brush Set: Unusual Stitching or even a template like ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Pulled Stitches.
We're all done! To keep the focus on my dressed-up photo pocket, I kept everything else on my layout quite simple. Now it's your turn! Go forth, grab some trim, and create a focal point on your own layouts!

Using Alpha Charms
Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS 10.5.8 - Leopard
Using alpha charms is as easy as A-B-C! Let me show you just how fun it is to use the Assemble Your Own: Alpha Charms to embellish your digital scrapbooking layout.
First, design your page, leaving a space where the alpha charms are to be placed. Then, open the chain file JWH_AYO_AlphaCharm_Chain_4 and drag it into your layout.
Size and position the chain, and in this case, move the chain layer to just above the paper layer, so it is behind the ribbon and frame. Now, it's time to bring in the letter charms for the word you want to spell. For this page, we are using the letters U, S, A.
Size and position the letters along the chain, rotating them if needed to get the charm hole on the chain. To make the charms appear that they are on the chain, part of the charm's hole needs to be erased.
Add a layer mask to the letter U layer. To add a mask, select the U layer, go to menu Layer> Add Layer Mask> Reveal All.
Or with the U layer selected, you can also go to the bottom of the Layers Palette and click the "Add Layer Mask" button. (This button looks like a gray rectangle with a white circle in the center.) Set your foreground color to black. Select a Small Hard Brush, and on the mask, brush away a part of one side of the charm hole. If you make a mistake, change your foreground color to white and correct it. Repeat adding a mask and brushing away parts of the holes for the remaining letters.
Apply a drop shadow to each letter and the chain. To further enhance this part of the title, how about adding some shapes to help carry out your theme? I am using star shapes, but there's no limit to the different shapes you could use to accentuate your layout's theme!
Load the custom shapes, draw the shape to size (holding the Shift key to maintain proportions), and fill the path with black. Or just drag the PNG into your layout, size it, and position it.
To make my star appear to be on the chain, I'm repeating the process of adding a mask and brushing away the small portion of the charm hole that would be behind the chain. I also selected a style for the stars, ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Metals 5001, specifically Burnished Copper. After applying it, I'm done!
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Metals 5001 are also available.

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!
Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.
To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.
