They must be warm and friendly, comfortably handle fast-paced chat room situations, and be able to easily answer questions that arise regarding their particular software area of expertise.

Candidates will be required to audition for this paid position. There will be a list of topics available from which classes can be developed; however, the teachers are encouraged to present their own ideas for approval as well.

Please contact Katherine Weaver at [email protected] for more details. If you are interested in applying, please forward to Katherine an up-to-date resume as well as a sample tutorial you have written. Application deadline is Tuesday, May 31, 2011.

Shortcuts to Success

So, you're working along in Photoshop on a layout, and for the fifth time today you've created a new layer by clicking Layer> New> Layer. Then the thought hits you, "I wish there was a quicker way to do this."

Did you know there actually is? It's called shortcuts.

What is a shortcut? A short cut is a special key combination that causes a specific command to be executed. Typically, shortcut keys combine the Ctrl or Alt keys with one or more other keys. An example of one that many people use on a regular basis is Ctrl+C - the shortcut key to copy.

Photoshop and Photoshop Elements also come with many built-in shortcuts that help make the tasks you do on a regular basis much quicker. Below is a list of the most popular shortcuts. Please keep in mind that these are listed as Windows shortcuts. If you are on a Mac you will substitute Cmd for Ctrl.

Story Time

Siblings

Note: Tutorial created using PSCS5 with Windows Vista

If you are like me, and I'm sure you are, then you have plenty of family stories that you want to digitally scrapbook. My twin sons have a birthday coming up soon, and it has me thinking about a funny conversation that comes up every now and then between them. Well, it might not be funny to them, but it is to me. I wanted an interesting way to document the conversation.

Have you ever thought about having someone hold up papers with messages on them? That's what I decided I wanted my boys to do. After we had the messages written, I took numerous pictures while the boys held up the messages. I wanted to capture the emotions that went along with the story, so I actually took 35 pictures of Ethan and Hunter, then 33 of their baby brother, Nathan. There were plenty that would not have worked well. But with so many to choose from, I was able find the perfect pictures for my layout.

Siblings Tutorial Screen Shot 1

The pictures themselves might tell a large part of the story, but you might want to include some journaling on your digital scrapbook layout to have other details remembered. I've been thinking of possibilities for future pictures and digital scrapbook layouts. A couple of small, white dry-erase boards might be convenient. You should give it a try! Having people hold up messages is a fun way to help tell your story.

Tips From The Pros

One Technique: Running an Action

Have you ever had a photo opportunity where the shot you wound up with just didn't quite meet your expectations? Maybe the cropping was wrong or the light quality or white balance didn't measure up?

Don't delete it! If the photo means something special, there are tricks to improve your photo so that it sparkles!

Just head on over to the Scrap Girls Boutique for some tools to improve your photo quality. One type of photo editing product is called an action. These are a preset group of commands that the software will perform automatically when you tell it to play. Actions work in both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

A recent favorite action of mine is ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Pop Edges for PS 2201. I love this action, and I want to show you how it works.

Here is my original photo:

Tips from the Pros One Technique Screen Shot 1

What I like about this photo is that it is the only documentation I have of meeting my fellow Scrap Girls friend, Lei (Bride), last year. I wasn't crazy about the composition of the photo across a restaurant table, and the interior lighting was only barely passable. I wanted to improve the composition by cropping and then adding some improved depth, color, and dimension to the photo.

First, I grabbed my Cropping Tool to select the portion of the photo that I wanted to emphasize. I chose to crop close to our faces, which helps to center us in a picture that had originally positioned us too far to the right.

Then, I clicked-and-dragged the cropped photo onto a new document.

Tips from the Pros One Technique Screen Shot 2

Next, I clicked on the Actions Palette to show my loaded actions. I selected ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Pop Edges for PS 2201. I clicked on the action that I wanted to run and then hit the green Play button at the bottom of the Action Palette. The one I chose was named "Pow."

Tips from the Pros One Technique Screen Shot 3

If you are following along and doing this on your own, then a list will pop up right now, and it will tell you what parameters need to be set. Follow those instructions, and then hit the green Play action again. Now the action will run all on its own - you just sit and watch! It's really fun to see the action zipping and zinging through its course! Here is my photo once the action had run:

Tips from the Pros One Technique Screen Shot 4

Your Layers Palette will look like this after the action has run its course:

Tips from the Pros One Technique Screen Shot 5

This action's result gives a vignette effect to the edges of my photo which draws the eye to our faces. The color and lighting is more dramatic as well. I now have a wonderful memory of my visit with Lei, instead of a wish for a better photo of the event. My photo went from "so-so" to "super" with the click of the green Play button on the Action Palette!

There are a large number of photo actions in the Scrap Girls Boutique – so there's surely one to suit your mind's eye of your photo or one to simply fulfill your creative desire!

Games

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Contests

May Monthly Layout Contest: What's blooming in your yard, garden, or neighborhood right now? For those in the northern hemisphere, it would be spring flowers. For those in the southern hemisphere, it would be flowers of the fall variety. For May's layout contest, show us what's blooming in your neck of the woods or show us photos of your favorite flowers. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
