Covering Shapes with Trim

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7

Adobe defines a "clipping mask" this way:

A clipping mask lets you use the content of a layer to mask the layers above it. The masking is determined by the content of the bottom or base layer. The non-transparent content of the base layer clips (reveals) the content of the layers above it in the clipping mask. All other content in the clipped layers is masked out.

Whoa! Did your eyes just cross?

Well, whatever the official definition of a clipping mask is, I know what I use a clipping mask for, and I know what it does. Let me explain it a little more clearly:

When you have a shape (such as a square), and you want a digital scrapbooking piece of paper to cover that square - and only that square, you want to use a clipping mask.

To create a clipping mask, just follow along. First, drag your paper onto your layout. Next, drag a shape onto your layout. Then, look to your Layers Palette and position your paper layer above the layer with the shape on it. Next, press Ctrl+G (in Photoshop Elements) or Ctrl+Shift+G (in Photoshop CS). That's it!

All of a sudden, your paper is "clipped" to the layer beneath it, only showing up in the shape portion (everything outside of the shape becomes transparent). All of the pixels of your paper are still there – you can move your paper around and see different sections of it – but only within the shape of the square.

Because a picture is worth a thousand words, here is a quick demonstration of a clipping mask.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Basic custom shape.

This flower is a basic custom shape. I brought in a paper from Brandy Murry's B. Sweet Collection. When I applied a clipping mask (Ctrl+G or Ctrl+Shift+G) on my paper layer, my paper became a part of the flower.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Clip paper to shape.

This is what your Layers Palette will look like:

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Screenshot of Layers Palette.

Adding paper to a shape is a great way to create unique and coordinating embellishments for your layout. By using basic shapes, such as squares and circles, and applying clipping masks, you can create all types of new embellishments.

In this image, I have created a cake, using three separate rectangle shapes. I brought in three separate pieces of paper and used a clipping mask to attach them to my rectangles. (My background is grey in order to help us see the cake and all the elements easier.)

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Use shapes and clipping masks to create unique embellishments.

I wanted to embellish my cake with rick-rack and other border trims, so I started adding my trims over my cake. Using a clipping mask is a fantastic way to attach trims to my shape – it is fast, easy, and you can position your trims exactly how you want them.

The following image is a screen shot of what my cake looked like as I was adding trim. The yellow swirl trim is what my trim looks like directly before I apply the clipping mask to it, which will attach the trim to the cake, just like the rest of the trims have been attached. Notice that there is a scallop on the cake's top layer. The scallop is simply a piece of rick-rack that I've enlarged and positioned to look like frosting.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Add trim to decorate embellishments.

After adding all my trim (using clipping masks), I was able to merge my layers together, then add my new cake embellishment to my layout. Now I have a fully customizable embellishment using a few pieces of digital paper, trim, rick-rack, and ribbon. So easy - and so fun!

Tips from the Pros

Make Your Own Button Embellishments

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS5 with Mac OS

Today I am going to show you how fun and easy it is to create your own digital scrapbooking buttons using ScrapSimple Tools!

Buttons can be as simple or as fancy as you want. The best part about digital buttons is that you can change the color to match your layout or project.

I am using ScrapSimple Tools - Shapes: Buttons 6301 and ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Buttons 6301 Mini in this tutorial.

First, choose a shape for your button. Click and drag it onto your document, holding down your Shift key as you drag so that your button keeps its shape.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Draw a custom shape.

Now comes the fun part! This is where you can get lost in playing with digital scrapbooking styles and seeing what fun effects you can apply to your buttons.

Below, I have added one of my ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Buttons 6301 Mini to give it some dimension so that it looks a bit like a plastic button.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Apply layer style to shape.

In the next example, I have used the square button and one of the other button styles to get a different effect.

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Apply different layer style.

You can also just add the digital scrabooking button styles to solid shapes to get a different kind of button as shown below. You could add a rhinestone to the center to dress it up!

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Clip paper to shape.

Next, let's try something completely different! Let's make a chipboard button by using ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Chipboard 6301. I really like this one!

Digital Scrapbook Layout Tutorial: Apply chipboard style.

Of course, you can apply all kinds of styles to your buttons, and the possibilities are really endless! I just love using shapes and styles together, because it makes creating your own digital scrapbooking buttons so fast and easy.

Games

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.
