Behind The Scenes

Scrap Girls is a collaboration of many people all coming together for one reason - the love of digital scrapbooking.

When you first think of Scrap Girls, you think of the designers who put out their beautiful work on a weekly basis, and the layout designers who give us eye candy to "ooh and ahhh" over in the daily newsletter. Or if you're a member of the Scrap Girls Forum, the Welcoming Committee, who is always there to say hi, answers questions you might have or shares a laugh with you in the Chat Room.

Of course, you also think of Rozanne - the inspiration behind Scrap Girls and the woman who has made Scrap Girls what it is today.

But did you know there's also another whole group of women who are behind the scene who help make all of this possible? Today I'd like to introduce you to that group of women, the ones who make sure everything is running smoothly on a daily basis.

Cindy Dake
Cindy is our Editor Extraordinaire. Cindy is responsible for editing all the eBooks in the Boutique, including all the articles that appear daily in the Scrap Girls Newsletter.

April Martell
April is our Message Board Manager. Besides making sure everything is running smoothly on the Message Board, April is also in charge of organizing all the wonderful events we have on the site.

Katherine Weaver
Many of you know Katherine from all the wonderful classes she has taught at Scrap Girls. Recently, Katherine accepted the position of Scrap Girls University Principal. Katherine is very excited about this new position, and we are excited to see what new ideas Katherine has for the University.

Laurel Lakey
Laurel is our Layout Artist Team Coordinator. Laurel makes sure the layout team has the supplies they need to work with, helps with inspiration for layout assignments, and cheers them every step of the way.

Becca Hauck
Becca is our Newsletter Superwoman! Becca takes all the pieces of the newsletter puzzle and puts it together so you all get the daily newsletter you love so much.

Wendee Pease
Wendee is our Backup Newsletter Superwoman and Website Guru. Wendee helps Becca get some of the newsletters out and is also in charge of updating the website and making changes on it.

Syndee Nuckles
We all know and love Syndee's design work. Syndee is now helping out with some newsletter columns and will be our Marketing Guru, so you'll soon be seeing Syndee's work in our ads on the site.

Kendahl and Kailey Nuckles
Another new addition to the site is Kendahl and Kailey. They are now our Social Media Ninjas, helping us with Twitter and Facebook.

Cheré Kaye Edwards
Along with designing, Cheré is now officially Ro's Right Hand Gal. One of Cheré's main responsibilities will be to help train new designers on the software we use for the Store and how to get their new product in the Boutique.

Angie Briggs
As for me, I handle Customer Service, answering and solving any issues you may have. I also do other jobs such as: CD burning, sending out the monthly Club subscriptions, sending out gift certificates/prizes, and helping with scheduling tutorials/articles for the newsletter.

I hope this gives you a little idea of what goes on behind the scenes at Scrap Girls. We wouldn't be able to do it without the hard work of all these wonderful women!

- Angie

Story Time

It's About Time

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7.

There are many reasons we create digital scrapbooks. It's a way to document important events. It preserves family memories. It's a creative outlet. It's a shared hobby that enables you to take part in a community. It's relaxing.

For me, it's about storytelling. The art of storytelling has been around since the beginning of time. It connects our past to our future, and it connects us to one another. The photos and/or elements on your page can go a long way in telling a story, but most often, it's journaling that brings the page to life. But for a lot of us, journaling is the most difficult part of the process.

One tool you can use to help you with your journaling is a time line. Time lines provide a way to incorporate a lot of information in a visually appealing, organized manner. You can use them in increments of decades, years, months, or weeks. For this project, I'm going to narrow it down to hours and show you how to document the details of one day.

To create a time line such as this, you need to know what time your photos were taken. If you're not sure, you can check the Properties of your digital photos. As long as you have set the current date and time on your digital camera, your camera will record the date and time that the photo was taken in the file properties of your photos. When you transfer your photos to your computer, that information will remain with the photo. To find it, navigate to the folder where your photo is kept. When you're in icon view (the view where the thumbnails of your photos are visible), you can easily see this information by hovering your mouse over the photo, prompting a box to pop up. You can see this in my screenshot below.

Digital Layout Tutorial Screenshot: Properties of photo files.

When I created my layout, I used this information to document the details of this day using a timeline. I was able to simply and easily tie together random photos taken throughout the day, photos that may not have gotten scrapped individually, to tell a story.

Try this technique for a fresh new look for journaling in your layouts. Happy journaling!

Tips From The Pros

Using a Shape in Your Title

Note: Tutorial created using PSCS5 with Windows Vista

As I was working on a layout about one of my sons, I was trying to decide how to give my title some interest. One of the fun things about digital scrapbooking is being able to try something and easily changing it up. I decided to try using a shape in place of a letter.

I started out with the word love. I liked the effect obtained by using vellum and metal styles. Here's what it looked like:

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Add title using alphas.

Since I wanted to use a shape in place of a letter, I decided to try replacing the "o" with a heart. I turned off the visibility of the "o" layers (the metal edge was on one layer and the vellum inner area was on another layer) by clicking on the Eye icon in the Layers Palette on the right-hand side of my program.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Turn off visibility of layers.

Now that the "o" was hidden, I placed a heart there. I gave it the same metal and vellum treatment as the other letters in the title. I decided it would work well, because it gave the title that "little something extra" I was looking for.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Replace one letter with a shape.

This isn't just any kind of love, though. This layout is about Nathan's love of bananas. I added a bubble word to my title to specify what kind of love this is.

Try using a shape in place of a letter in one of your titles. The dots of an "i" or "j" would be fun, too. With digital scrapbooking, it's easy and fun to play with the possibilities.

Games

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Contests

May Monthly Layout Contest: What's blooming in your yard, garden, or neighborhood right now? For those in the northern hemisphere, it would be spring flowers. For those in the southern hemisphere, it would be flowers of the fall variety. For May's layout contest, show us what's blooming in your neck of the woods or show us photos of your favorite flowers. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
