Today's Special of the Day!

Acceptance Collection
Save 30% off this Collection today only!

Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Paula Wright. In a short interview with Paula, she shared these comments with us...

I live with my family in Utah where we have really beautiful winters, but by Spring I am always so happy to see snow melting away and the flowers and trees beginning to bloom. I was inspired by the blooming trees in my neighborhood and my darling niece Lexie, who was planning her wedding, while I was designing this collection. For years, I have designed and created wedding gowns as well as doing graphic design. Weddings are such a happy time in our lives. So, I decided to combine two of my favorite things - Spring and weddings in the Acceptance Collection. This collection works great for many occasions, as only the word art is specific to weddings. And, the colors are perfect if you want to create a Scrap Girls layout!

1. When designing a collection what do you start with first? Papers, embellishments, word art?

This really depends upon the collection and where the inspiration came from. Sometimes I will do all the papers first, but usually, I will do a few embellishments and papers and start working on a layout right away. Doing this helps me figure out what a collection really needs. I like to have a variety of colors in a collection so that it is versatile and can be used to get many different looks from one collection. There always seems to be one or two favorite papers or embellishments that I am drawn to in the end. Word art is often the last thing that I finish up.

2. Are you an early morning designer or do you burn the midnight candle?

I am a night owl. It is only after everyone else has gone to bed and the house is quiet that I get most of my work done.

How to Color A Paper Template

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS3 with Windows XP

Today, let's discover how to color a paper template! At Scrap Girls, we call them ScrapSimple Paper Templates, because they are super simple to use. What I love about paper templates is that I can use them to make a paper that will match or compliment my photo in my digital scrapbooking layout. If you have never used a paper template before, today you will find out how easy it is to add color to them.

A paper template is a 12x12-inch, patterned template that you can add your own color and create your own custom digital scrapbooking paper. Generally, the paper template is a neutral black or gray color that you can change to whatever color you want. Some paper templates may be a common polka-dot or a stripe pattern. For this tutorial, I am using ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Becoming. I have chosen the template entitled SBA_SSPPTemp_Becoming_12x12_Leaves.png because it goes with my nature photo.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Example of a paper template.

This paper template is a PNG file, which means it has a solid pattern surrounded by empty space. It looks very much like an overlay at this point.

The next steps are going to show you how to add a new layer above your paper template, fill it with color, then clip the color to your paper template. This is just one way to add color to your paper template. I like adding color to my paper templates this way because it's easy to change my mind to a different color at any time.

First, open your paper template on your work space. Go to File> Save As and give the paper template a new name. This will keep your original paper template untouched while you work on a copy of the paper template. Keeping the original paper template will allow you to use it again later.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Create a new layer.

Now, add a new layer. You can create a new layer by clicking on the New Layer icon at the bottom of your Layers Palette. A new empty layer will appear above your paper template.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Select a color.

Next, fill with color. You can choose which color you want your paper template to be. Pick your color by using the Eye Dropper Tool, located in your Tools Palette. You can choose a color from the Photoshop color swatches, or you can select a color from your photograph.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Use the Paint Bucket to fill the layer with color.

Once you have your color picked, choose the Paint Bucket Tool. (It looks like a paint bucket that is pouring paint.) Click on your paper with your Paint Bucket Tool to fill the new layer with your color. Sometimes I change my mind about the color, so at any time, I can use these same steps to change the color of my paper template.

What you will see now on your work space is a solid color, and the paper template is hiding under it.

Next, clip the color layer to the paper template. With the color layer in your Layers Palette selected (highlighted), clip your color layer to your paper template by using your keyboard commands Ctrl+Alt+G (or Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements). This will merge the color layer down onto your paper template. You can see in the Layers Palette how the solid green layer has the arrow down into the paper template, turning it from black to green.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Clip color layer to template layer.

Congratulations! You have just added color to your paper template!

To finish your paper, create another new layer below your paper template, and fill that with a different color. To do this, you will have to create a new layer, then (in your Layers Palette) click on the new layer, and drag it to sit below your paper template.

Save your work by going to File> Save. You have just created your own custom paper using a paper template!

As you can see in my layout below, my infatuation with birds continues. My brother took this photo while we were on a family walk. I love their bright blue feathers. Plus, the drama of the green leaves contrasting against the deep brown of the paper flirts with the birds in the photo.

Tips From The Pros

Seven Ideas for Making Layouts About Your Pet

How many of you have pets? How many of you have had pets in the past? I'm guessing most of you have!

Since pets can be a pretty big part of our home life, they definitely deserve a place in our scrapbooks. Today, I'm going to give you seven layout idea starters to help you create layouts about your pet.

1. How did you get your pet? Both my current family pets have an interesting story behind them.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Journal about your pets.

Let me tell you how Goldie came to live with us. At Christopher's 8th birthday party, his friend, John, walked in with two goldfish in a bag and a starter aquarium set. Now, here in America, there is an unwritten rule that you don't foist a pet on an unsuspecting person/family without prior consent. However, unbeknownst to us, Christopher apparently told all his friends that he wanted a pet for his birthday. He told Daniela he wanted a snake! In the end, we were grateful he only received two goldfish.

Christopher has been a very responsible pet owner. He always feeds her and tells me when it's time to clean her tank. He insisted we buy the Sponge Bob-themed pineapple house for her to hide in.

2. How did your pet get its name? I chose our dog Reuben's name before we got him. Beagles howl "rooooo" so I wanted that sound in his name somehow. Perhaps your cat slinks around like a shadow and she's gray, so you named her Shadow.

3. Where does your pet like to hang out? Christopher hoped Goldie would hang out in her pineapple house, but she prefers hiding around the plant instead. Our current beagle, Daisy, loves to sleep at the foot of our bed (hiding) under the covers. This is quite welcome in the cold Iowa winters!

4. What is your pet's favorite toy? Can your dog sleep without his favorite chew toy by his bed? The golden retriever I used to dog-sit loved to "perform liposuction" on his stuffed animals!

5. Does your pet do anything funny? All pets seem to have their funny quirks. Will your cat chase the laser pointer around the dimmed room while you and your children giggle hysterically?

6. Does your pet do anything annoying? Daisy loves to chase bunnies and will go to such lengths as digging out under our fence to run off after them. Does your child's hamster wake him at night by running on its wheel?

7. Who is your pet's favorite person? Likely, this is whoever feeds him!

The stories of our pets and our friends' pets are some of our happiest and funniest memories. Pets can be quite endearing and often insert themselves firmly in our heart. These amusing (and sometimes heart-wrenching) stories can add a lot of depth to your digital scrapbooking pages. Along with chronicling your latest vacation and holiday photos, don't forget to make room in your digital scrapbooks for your pets!

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

May Monthly Layout Contest: What's blooming in your yard, garden, or neighborhood right now? For those in the northern hemisphere, it would be spring flowers. For those in the southern hemisphere, it would be flowers of the fall variety. For May's layout contest, show us what's blooming in your neck of the woods or show us photos of your favorite flowers. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
