Save 30% off this Collection Mini today only!

Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Cherise Oleson. In a short interview with Cherise, she shared these comments with us...

While visiting some out-of-town family for Easter, I saw a couple of little girls with adorable matching dresses in bright turquoise and green. It was such a breath of fresh air to see these vibrant colors among the sea of pinks, yellows and other more traditional Easter dress colors. As soon as I got home, I started designing this collection and named it "Fresh Air" in honor of that feeling I had when I saw those dresses!

1. What programs do you use?

Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop CS3

2. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Chocolate with chunks of chocolate and stuff in it.

Life Muse by Ro

Rozanne Paxman
Rozanne Paxman

If you edit your creativity too much...

  • You lose track of your idea before you can express it.

  • You become hyper-aware of what you are doing, and the creative process will cease.

  • You never finish your first draft.

  • You won't experiment with new things.

  • Everything you do becomes too "precious," and you will be overly connected with what has happened instead of looking ahead for the next idea.

  • You lose your sense of your voice as you attempt to express what you think others want to hear instead of using the voice that God gave you.

  • You get stuck looking for missing periods and stray commas instead of trying to locate the point you hope to express.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

What Are Convention Classes?

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP

In the past few years, Scrap Girls has held two Digital Scrap Link Conventions in Salt Lake City, Utah. These have been incredible events for all who attended. Not only were you able to meet the Scrap Girls team in real life, you were able to meet and get to know other women who have a love for digital scrapbooking.

Part of the convention was dedicated to learning new digital scrapbooking skills. Teachers were selected from the design and layout teams, and those attending were able to learn firsthand from the combined talents and skills of the instructors. I had the opportunity to teach both years and loved sharing my first love of fine art and painting in the digital world.

Scrap Girls 2009 Digital Scrap Link Class: Creating a Painting With Styles

Each conference session had limited seating, but we knew many would want to learn the skills taught at the convention, so Scrap Girls added these Digital Scrap Link Classes as a downloadable eBook for purchase. This makes it easy for you to take classes one at a time and learn the same techniques that the participants experienced at the convention.

Scrap Girls Ebooks come in convenient PDF format.

Each eBook comes in a simple PDF format with step-by-step instructions and screenshots to make it easy for you to learn the techniques and follow along. It can easily be viewed via your computer screen or printed out to have on hand as you work through the class individually.

Style set included with Convention eBook purchase.

Some classes even come with extra products or supplies to make it easy for you to follow right along with the teacher. For my class, Scrap Girls 2009 Digital Scrap Link Class: Creating a Painting With Styles, you receive a free style set that gives you the ability to create the texture and effects of canvas, oil paint, and watercolor on your photos.

Digital Scrapbook Ebook Tutorial: Sample of photo.

In my specific class, I show you how to take a simple photo like this one of my son...

Digital Scrapbook Ebook Tutorial: Photo edited with eBook techinique.

...and turn it into a textured painting on canvas with basic styles and layers. There are so many fun ways to use this technique, and before you know it, you'll be turning all your photos into paintings!

The great thing about the convention classes is that there are so many unique classes - from photography to designing to layout construction and more - that you can easily find a class that will interest you and help you take your skills to the next level. Why don't you go check them out for yourself? I'm sure you'll find something that you'd like to learn how to do!

One thing I love about digitally scrapping these paintings is trying to find a way to frame it or display it on my layout so that it feels like you could reach out and touch it in the frame and feel the texture of the canvas and paint. That part is just as fun as creating the painting itself!

Tips From The Pros

Layouts about Mom

Our snow has finally melted, Easter eggs have been hidden and found, and the chocolate bunny has been devoured. Spring is in full swing and now it's time to turn our attention to Mother's Day!

How do you put everything your mom means to you in one layout? Maybe it's not possible... maybe you need an entire digital scrapbooking album to express how you feel about your mom, what she means to you, or to describe her personality. Maybe you can't even decide where to begin!

Here are some tips that may help you get started:

  • Your mom was a little girl once. If she is still with you, ask her what she was like as a child or have her tell you a childhood story. Then use old photos, if you have them, and add journaling to create a digital scrapbook layout from her perspective.

  • Ask her some questions like: What is your favorite movie, song, or book? What is your favorite part of being a mom? What is your pet peeve? What is your favorite flower? You get the idea!

  • Write out a list of words that describe your mom and then create a page about her character, her qualities, and/or her personality traits. Many of our designers have included descriptive word art in their digital scrapbooking collections. I bet you could find most of the words you come up with right there in your digital stash!

  • Use journaling to describe a memory or a funny story about your mom.

  • Ask yourself some questions about your mom. What is your favorite thing about her? What do you think is her pet peeve? What is that one thing she says all the time, the one thing that you just know she's going to say in a certain circumstance? What did you think about her when you were a teenager, and how has your perception changed now that you are older?

  • Is there a famous quote that describes your mother perfectly? Use it and create your own word art using different fonts and alphas.

For my layout, I wanted to use some silly pictures that were taken at my mom's 70th birthday dinner. Then I decided to use three simple words that describe my mom (loving, honest, fun), along with one sentence - "I am a mom, and I take my job very seriously!" I used the first four words to create a catchy title and then placed the rest of the sentence on a journal mat.

May Message Board Game: Spotlight on the Boutique!

Each day during May (with the exceptions of Sundays), a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout in the official game thread. The layout will correspond with a product in the Scrap Girls Boutique and will be either the only layout or directly to the right of the product image on the product details page. A spotlight circle will show a portion of the layout you are to search for. If the layout is not identified by the following morning, a second spotlight circle will be added to the layout. This will be repeated until the product is identified.

To participate, search the Boutique for the layout and post a link to the product page in the official game thread. One guess per member per day. The winner will be drawn from all members who correctly identify a product throughout the month. The winner will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

May Monthly Layout Contest: What's blooming in your yard, garden, or neighborhood right now? For those in the northern hemisphere, it would be spring flowers. For those in the southern hemisphere, it would be flowers of the fall variety. For May's layout contest, show us what's blooming in your neck of the woods or show us photos of your favorite flowers. Post your layouts in the May Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on May 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Mountain Time Zone unless otherwise noted.
