You Speak Out

Procrastination, My Dear Friend

Procrastination, my dear friend,
You can be lots of fun
But you, at times, do offend.

I looked for pics for my first scrap creation
But ended up sorting folders,
Then thought, what in tarnation?

Then this poem came to mind,
So I had to write it down
And still the photo, I didn't find.

Leave this now, do not delay!
Find your photo needs,
Then go scrap and play.

Procrastination, my dear friend,
You can be lots of fun
But you, at times, do offend.

I've found the photo and a background, too,
Everything is in the Refresh Collection.
Yes, these great items will do.

Where will I put them for a while?
I'll set up new folders from basic tutorials
I will then have the right file.

I've done it again, my dear friend,
I still haven't started my layout.
This must end.

Procrastination, my dear friend,
You can be lots of fun
But you, at times, do offend.

Messages from the Scrap Girls board
Keep my mailbox beckoning to me.
I just have to check out - what is the word?

All those hellos with such wonderful support,
I'm overwhelmed by the replies!
I must get the layout done - do not abort.

Open PSE and the files I've found to use.
Go to University and choose the tuts I need.
Get the layout started with the help of my muse.

Procrastination, my dear friend,
You can be lots of fun
But you, at times, do offend.

My laptop is running so slow,
It's difficult to learn the program.
I'd like to be in the know.

Each time I change between the pages,
There's a pop-up to buy or continue.
At this rate it'll take ages.

Close it up for tonight,
I can't try any more.
Things just aren't right.

Procrastination, my dear friend,
You can be lots of fun
But you, at times, do offend.

I have places to go, people to see,
And things to do.
I'll do it when there's time that's free.

I got info for job retraining,
The dog food bought and errands done,
Now my layout, no more abstaining.

I have PSP9 on my PC,
There's info for it at Scrap Girls,
So I'll try it and see.

Procrastination, my dear friend,
You can be lots of fun
But you, at times, do offend.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Printing Photos - Part 2: Printing Cell Phone Photos

Remember this photo from last week - the one I shot using my husband's cell phone? I had emailed it to myself to help me explain why 72 pixels-per-inch (ppi) resolution isn't acceptable for printing photos.

Photo Tutorial: Sample of emailed cell phone photo.

I really liked this photo, and I wanted to use it in a layout. I knew I couldn't just email it to myself, because the process would automatically resize the photo smaller. So how did I take the photo from my husband's camera phone and make it print-worthy?

Let me show you how...

Step 1: Most cell phones have some form of internal memory or even a mini SD card. In the cell phone I used, photos were stored on a mini SD card. I removed the mini SD card from the phone, slipped it into a SD card adapter, and plugged into the SD card port on my desktop computer.

Step 2: I opened up Photoshop and clicked File> Open and browsed to the location of the mini SG card and clicked on the image I wanted to use. Next, I clicked File> Save As and saved the image to a new location on my computer.

Step 3: I wanted to resize this photo to a standard print size. I did this by going to Image> Image Size, and changing the resolution to 300 ppi. Then I entered "7" as my width and since the "Constrain Proportions" box was checked, it automatically changed the height to 5.25 inches.

Photo Tutorial: Resizing a cell phone photo.

Step 4: To bring out the color and some of the finer details in this photo, I ran Heidi Dillon's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Clarify 11301 Mini, using the "Photo" option. This gave me just the right amount of "pop" to turn this into a fabulous photo!

Photo Tutorial: Run photo clarifying action on photo.

Here is a close-up of this photo at full 300 pixels-per-inch resolution after I edited it as described above. Notice that there is none of that fuzzy "splotches" that we saw in last week's version of the very same photo.

Now my camera phone photo is ready to be printed or used in a layout!

Member of the Month

Barb
Scrap Girls' Member of the Month - April 2011
Member Name: goodqueenbee

1. What program do you use to do your digital scrapbooking?

My Christmas gift was CS5 Premium Suite, and I have loved learning all the new programs and features, besides scrapping in CS5. What an awesome gift! Since I am taking a class in Adobe Illustrator in college, I have learned even more about CS5 than I knew before! CS5 a great program, but I still use PSE7 occasionally.

2. Are you a Mac or a PC?

I have a PC desktop and laptop. My hubby keeps telling me he will buy me a MAC, but as long as I can work, I mean play, I am not in a hurry to get it!

3. Tell us the make and model of digital camera that you use.

My main camera is a Canon REBEL XS with a regular and 700mm zoom lens. I also have a small Canon pocket-size camera, but my daughter seems to keep "borrowing" it from me!

4. Name one thing that every beginning digital scrapbooker should know.

Everyone learns at their own pace and some people (myself included) need to see, hear, and experience things they are learning to make it "stick." If you learn it, find a way to use it several times so you can remember to use it again. Everyone was a beginner at one time! Hang in there!

5. If you could be transformed into a digital scrapbooking embellishment, what would you choose and why?

A flower embellishment... (sigh) flowers are my first love. When I look at flowers, I see God's hand shaping, designing their uniqueness and painting their lovely little "faces" to please Himself! When I design flowers, the best I can do is imitate His designs! I like to work in clusters of flowers on my layouts whenever I can.

6. What time of day do you find that you do your best scrapbooking?

I like to scrap during the morning, but find my mornings are usually too busy. Most of the actual work gets done in the evening while my husband and I are just relaxing.

7. What is your favorite snack?

Uh oh... just one? I guess it will have to be Oreo cookies since I always have them in the house (...and they are chocolate!).

8. What is your least favorite household chore?

Definitely bathrooms, but since there are only two of us, and he won't do them, I have to schedule the unpleasantness.

9. Finish this sentence. "I couldn't live without..."

...my Lord and Savior and my Bible. Someday I may have to live without one of my loved ones, but He will always be there for me. His Word will always be a comfort. Just add a PC, and I am connected to His world!

10. What's your current favorite layout that you've done?

April Message Board Game: BINGO!

Join us for an exciting game of Springtime BINGO on the Message Board Forum in April! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Saturday, April 2nd at Midnight MST in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Monday, April 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!
