From My Notebooks

Note to self: When I am asked to sing in the church choir on the spur of the moment, refuse unless they are willing to talk me through it first. While I enjoy singing solos, starting too soon (before the rest of the choir begins singing at the right moment) isn't the best way to start my day.

Note to self: It is probably not the best idea to think about your summer vacation while someone is waiting for you to play the organ for the next song. On the other hand, starting the song before the bishop gives the announcement can be rather disconcerting to the congregation.

Note to self: If you are washing your mattress pad, it is a good idea to put it in the dryer before 10 p.m.

Note to self: If you pour the oil out of the peanut butter in an effort to save a few calories, the peanut butter will be lumpy and won't spread well on the bread.

Note to self: Don't check email at 11 p.m. unless you are prepared to stay up until 12 a.m.

Note to self: Remember to read "notes to self."

Bokeh with a Point-and-Shoot Camera

First, you may be wondering, "Just what is bokeh?" Let me make things clearer by blurring them up a little. Read on....

Wikipedia says: In photography, bokeh is the blur, or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image, or "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light." Basically, this means that portions of your image (either behind, in front, or both behind and in front of your main focal point) are blurry. Points of light sometimes create round or hexagonal-shaped specular highlights, which can be very pleasing to the eye. In this tutorial, I'm going to teach you how to achieve the effect of bokeh with a point-and-shoot camera.

Don't worry, I won't get all technical on you! It's really very simple. Just take a quick look at these two images of my son digging in the sand at the lake.

Photography Tutorial: Bokeh sample.
larger view

Both of these images are very good and both are pleasing to the eye. But one has bokeh (or blur), and one does not. The photo you choose for your digital scrapbooking layout would depend on the story and the feeling you want to convey to the viewer.

But how do you achieve bokeh with a point-and-shoot camera? Here are the steps I took to achieve bokeh in the image on the left.

First, I chose the Portrait mode on my camera. You can also use Auto or Macro. This might take some playing with your camera to see what works best with the subject and environment you are in.

Then I made sure that my subject was a fair distance from the background that I wanted to be blurred, and I zoomed in as far as my camera would go. At this point, I had to use a little foot power to frame my image – in other words, I moved over and positioned myself and my camera lens to get the right composition for my photo.

Click! I took the picture and viola... bokeh with a point-and-shoot camera. I told you it was simple. Now, go on out there and start playing with your cameras! Practice makes progress, I always say.

Tips From The Pros

Quick Stitching Border

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7.

I'm always on the search for that final little touch that helps me look at a digital scrapbooking layout and think, "Ahh! Finished!"

I've found that adding a quick stitch border on my layout almost always does the trick, so I thought I'd show you how I do it quickly and easily to wrap up my layout and call it complete.

I created a layout using the ScrapSimple Digital Layout Template: Lots of Shots 2, which I tweaked just a tad to emphasize my three favorite photos showing off my daughter and her encounter with her first birthday cake. I loved putting it together, adding my journaling, just a few simple embellishments, and some style and shadows. I felt the photos were bold and active enough to not need many embellishments. I looked at my layout and thought, "Cute - but not quite complete."

Digital Scrapbooking Layout Tutorial: Sample layout before stitching.

I decided to add a zigzag stitch border from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Basically Bordered Stitching to "hold down" my white paper and attach it to the pink background.

I dragged the zigzag stitch (with shadow) and the coordinating zigzag stitch holes onto my layout. With both layers active in the Layers Palette, I used the Transform Tool to adjust the size of the stitches to line up just right with the edges of my white paper.

Digital Scrapbooking Layout Tutorial: Drag stitching paper template layers onto the layout.

There are lots of ways to recolor ScrapSimple Embellishment and Paper Templates. This is one very quick and easy way to do it - and I've found it works extremely well with the stitch borders.

First, add a new layer (Shift+Ctrl+N) directly above the layer with your stitching template in the Layers Palette. With your choice of color in the foreground of your color palette, use the Paint Bucket Tool to fill in the entire new layer with solid color.

Digital Scrapbooking Layout Tutorial: Add a new layer and fill with color.

Next, with your color-filled layer active in the Layers Palette, simply create a Clipping Mask (Ctrl+Alt+G or use Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements). Your solid-colored layer will clip itself to the stitching template below it. The realistic look of the stitching won't show through yet, but that's easily corrected in the next step.

Digital Scrapbooking Layout Tutorial: Clip color-fill layer to stitching layer.

Now you simply adjust Blending Modes on the color-filled layer until you obtain the color and look you want for your stitching. I started with a layer set to Blending Mode "Screen" at 71% Opacity. Now the realistic look of the stitching is visible.

Digital Scrapbooking Layout Tutorial: Change Blend Mode and Opacity of color-fill layer.

I wanted the stitching color to be a bit more intense, so I duplicated the color-fill layer and changed the Blending Mode in the duplicate layer to "Overlay" with 100% Opacity, resulting in a lovely shade of lavender still allowing the realistic look of the stitching template to show through.

Digital Scrapbooking Layout Tutorial: Duplicate color layer and change Blend Mode.

Now when I look at my layout, I get that sense of completion and satisfaction. Adding just a simple, stitched border can be a perfect final touch to your digital scrapbooking layouts!
