Ever wish that you could be a Product Designer for Scrap Girls?

Well, now's your chance to apply!

If you are interested, please forward the following items to [email protected].

The subject line must read: Product Designer Application.

  1. 3 color palettes that you might use as a basis for designing collections.

  2. A collection mini, consisting of 6 background papers, 1 "sheet" of embellishments, and 1 "sheet" of word art.

A "sheet" consists of a grouping of items that will fit on an 8.5x11 document. Take care to make sure that the collection mini's color set is well balanced and that it has an idea that ties it together. It should contain enough embellishments and word art to be useful to someone who wishes to make several layouts from it. Also, take care that the embellishments are not a grouping of a small number of items that have just been re-colored. This is your opportunity to show your versatility and skill-level.

  3. At least one sample layout using the collection mini.

  4. A brush set with 3 brushes.

  5. A paper template set (like our ScrapSimple Paper Templates) with 2 papers.

  6. An embellishment template set (like our ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates) with 3 embellishments.

Also, answer the following questions in the body of your application email.

  1. Approximately, how much would you like to earn each month?
  2. Approximately, how many hours do you have to dedicate to design work each week?
  3. What are your goals as it pertains to design work?
  4. Why are you interested in working with Scrap Girls?
  5. What software do you use?
  6. Any other information that you will would be helpful as we make our decision.

Other instructions: Save your files as 600px wide, 72 dpi. Place them in one zipped folder and forward with your application email.

DEADLINE: Friday, April 29th, 5:00 PM Mountain Time.

Notifications of results will be sent to all applicants by Friday, May 6th.

What is Ro looking for in a new designer?

  1. Talent
  2. Desire to work with Scrap Girls and be a committed, active member of our team
  3. Work ethic
  4. Software and designing skills

If a talented person comes along whose skills are not quite what they might be, and if Ro feels they would be a super-committed, dynamic member of our team if given a little help, she may choose to put them through an apprentice program.

You Speak Out

Two Views of Parenthood

Recently, I was volunteering at my child's school when the subject of age and motherhood came up. There was a debate over whether it was easier to be a parent as a young mother or as an older mother.

Since I had my first son when I was 19, had my twin boys when I was 20, and adopted my youngest son at the age of 35, everyone looked at me. I replied with the truth. When my oldest boys were toddlers, I had the energy (and the back!) to crawl through the tunnels on the playground with them. Now that my youngest son is a toddler, I enjoy watching him crawl through the tunnels with his siblings. But I have more patience when he doesn't want to leave.

My experience tells me that neither age/stage is better than the other. They are merely different!

Printing Photos - Part 1: Why Emailed Photos Don't Print Well

In this digital age, many of us share photos in variety of ways - on Facebook, personal blogs, within emails, and on forum galleries like the Gallery here at Scrap Girls. Have you ever printed a photo that you've received via email? Chances are the results were less than satisfactory. But do you know why?

Let me explain why, using the photo below. I took this picture with my husband's camera phone while we were out at a local garden shop and then emailed it to myself.

Photo Tutorial: Sample of emailed cell phone photo.

This photo arrived in my Inbox as 320 pixels wide by 240 pixels high at a resolution of 72 pixels per inch. The file size of this photo is a mere 33.3 kilobytes.

Like most photos that you see on the Internet, the 72-pixels-per-inch (ppi) is a web-standard for photos. This standard resolution was developed years ago - long before high speed Internet access was widely available. The 72-ppi resolution allowed photos and images to load quickly when dial-up speeds were the norm.

What does this have to do with printing? A lot! Here's a comparison - one of the first things you learn when you shop the Scrap Girls Boutique is that the digital files you will receive are at 300-ppi (or sometimes called "dpi" - dots per inch). That means the designs you purchase will look just as great in a 12x12-inch printed layout as they would if you bought a paper embellishment from a brick-and-mortar scrapbooking store.

The same standard applies to your photos! You want to print photos at a resolution of 300-ppi. Photos that are saved for web viewing have lost a lot of image data to make them small enough to share in an email.

Take a look at the screenshot below. This is what the above photo looks like up close.

Photo Tutorial: Close-up view of emailed photo.

See the difference? Those fuzzy "splotches" come from a loss of quality that happens when photos are resized for web viewing. Those splotches will show up on your printed photo - and you don't want that, do you?

So let's recap... for web viewing, 72-pixels-per-inch is the standard. But for printing, you want to remember that 300-pixels-per-inch will give you much better photo quality.

Stay tuned for next week's article where I'll show you how to take those photos from your camera phone and get great high-quality prints!

See you next week,
Becca

Just Because It's Fun

What Customers Are Saying...

Our customers mean the world to us! We do our best to make each one happy with what they find here at Scrap Girls. Here are a few of the nice things our customers have said lately:

The new JIF items in our Scrap Girls Club subscription are just fantastic. I like that the Club now contains "Members Only" items. I hope it encourages others to join. It's so worth it. Wonderful new additions. Thanks to everyone who made this happen!

div

Just wanted to thank you for everything you do to make it possible for me to make wonderful layouts for my family and friends. My grown children really appreciate the layouts that I email them of each other and of our grandkids — they send me their pictures of their children so I can make layouts and send them back! One son that hadn't been open to a relationship with us for 16 years has started emailing and calling to talk to us this spring. He was very grateful for the layouts that I have made of his little daughter and wife! What an icebreaker this has been! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! (You really are such a blessing to me!) I'm truly appreciative.

div

I wanted to say thank you for your Christian themes which you include in your newsletters and the products you design to help us express our faith. Thank you! Not only is it a joy to see such beautiful layouts that affect the eye as well as the soul, but also there are many times when it touches me directly in a moment of sadness and helps to pick me up. I deeply appreciate the commitment that you have made to Christian values as a company. Thank you, and God bless you and your business!

div

Wow, Rozanne – thank you so much for this awesome gift! Your newsletters are always a treat to receive and a joy to read through. This recent News Bulletin was certainly a pleasant surprise. I thought the Scrap Girls Club was already a bargain with the absolutely gorgeous products you and your designers put together every month, so these JIFFY albums truly are a bonus! You are all so generous and take such good care of your customers – and now this extra special treat for your loyal Club members!

div

Scrap Girls is wonderful! Thank you so much for solving my problem! You are so quick and so helpful! I can't thank you enough... let the fun begin!

div

What a totally wonderful surprise! When I first started to read the discount announcement and saw the new items that were added to this month's club, I thought to myself, "Aww, I want that sweet little JIF Kit and those templates, too." I had already downloaded my kit, and the items weren't included, so I thought perhaps I had missed out. But I kept reading about what I had missed out on and there it was - a paragraph that told me to go download mine! Woo hoo - I'm so excited! They're downloading now, and I can't wait to see them up close and personal. Thank you so much for the added elements in our Scrap Girls Club kit each month!

div

Just wanted to add my "happy-dance-thank-you" to Scrap Girls for the wonderful surprise this afternoon! I started reading the email for the sale and thought it was just a reminder that the sale was about to end. Much to my surprise, there was more. Thank you, thank you, thank you! The giving at Scrap Girls just never stops! I love Scrap Girls!

div

Scrap Girls just keeps getting better! The Club subscription was already a great deal, but the new goodies just make it that much better each month! This is too fun!

Scrap Girls! That's who!
Woo-hoo!

div

I've never used a JIF page before, but I will definitely be using one of these gorgeous pages! The JIFFY Album is so cute, too, and I'm looking forward to using it as well.

div

I was so thrilled with the coupon and being able (for my 20th wedding anniversary gift) to rejoin the Club! Now I find out it's better than ever! Plus - shhh, don't tell hubby - with the savings, I joined the ScrapSimple Club, too! I'm really looking forward to getting some scrapping done and now with the quick pages and templates, what excuses can I come up with?!

div

All I can say is, "Wow! Scrap Girls is the best!" What a basket of goodies you have given us. I'm just getting ready to unzip them now. They are just beautiful. Thank you so much. What a wonderful surprise.

Here's how it will work: Early on Monday, I'll post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and I will have a layout with a Word Art example in the gallery. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout! Everyone can participate and create a layout, even if you can't make the chat. Hope to see you there!

April Message Board Game: BINGO!

Join us for an exciting game of Springtime BINGO on the Message Board Forum in April! Pick 25 words from the list provided and send them in an email to [email protected] with a subject line that says "BINGO CARD - your Scrap Girls Message Board username" by Saturday, April 2nd at Midnight MST in order to play in the first round. The first round will begin on Monday, April 4th. If you miss the first round deadline, you can still play! Just send in your BINGO card at any time during the month, and you'll be eligible to begin playing when the next new round starts.

Each day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will call five random words from the BINGO list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call "BINGO!" in the game thread to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards will be cleared and a new round will begin the following day.

Each winner will receive a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Stop! Before you unsubscribe... Did you know we have a Weekly Round-Up newsletter?

This action-packed newsletter is sent out on Tuesday afternoons and summarizes what has happened in the past week. It's perfect for people who feel that they are too busy to read the daily editions! If you would like to receive our Round Up Newsletter, scroll to the bottom of this email and use the "Update Profile/Email Address" option to join the Round Up list and/or change your subscription options to our newsletters.

Of course, the Weekly Round Up Newsletter contains a fresh, new freebie, so even if you like to get the daily newsletters, you might want to join the Weekly Round-Up Newsletter, too. It's a great way to keep track of all of the fun things you are learning!
