Today's Special of the Day!

Arts N Crafty Kids Collection Biggie
Save 30% off this Collection Biggie today only!

Each week on Tuesdays, we will be spotlighting one designer and one of their favorite products. This product will be on sale for one day only at 30% off!

This week's designer spotlight is on Ang Campbell. In a short interview with Ang, she shared these comments with us...

I love to digitally create, but I also really enjoy creating tangible things and playing with art supplies. I'm not very good at the grown-up arts and crafts, but my kids and I love getting our hands messy with finger paints, sticky with glue and stickers and twisted up in yarn and pipe cleaner. Because my kids enjoy arts and crafts time so much, and because I love taking pictures of them in all their messy, creative glory, I knew it was time to design a collection I could use to showcase the photos I was taking of my arts-n-crafty kids. This was definitely my most enjoyable collection to design because it was such an interactive and creative process with my children. I love the bright, bold colors and the familiar textures of construction paper, finger paints and play dough. I hope you enjoy using it as much as I do!

1. What programs do you use?

I use Photoshop CS4 and will avoid upgrading for as long as possible. I'm very comfortable with it and I like sticking with what I know. I'm not a fan of change, but I do like to learn new things so I'm sure I'll end up upgrading after another release or two have been launched.

2. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Depends on who's making it! I really love Ben and Jerry's Cheesecake Brownie ice cream. And at Christmas time when you can find peppermint ice cream, I'm a big fan of that with thick caramel sauce on it. For any old time, I love McDonald's vanilla cones.

Ever wish that you could be a Product Designer for Scrap Girls?

Well, now's your chance to apply!

If you are interested, please forward the following items to [email protected].

The subject line must read: Product Designer Application.

  1. 3 color palettes that you might use as a basis for designing collections.

  2. A collection mini, consisting of 6 background papers, 1 "sheet" of embellishments, and 1 "sheet" of word art.

A "sheet" consists of a grouping of items that will fit on an 8.5x11 document. Take care to make sure that the collection mini's color set is well balanced and that it has an idea that ties it together. It should contain enough embellishments and word art to be useful to someone who wishes to make several layouts from it. Also, take care that the embellishments are not a grouping of a small number of items that have just been re-colored. This is your opportunity to show your versatility and skill-level.

  3. At least one sample layout using the collection mini.

  4. A brush set with 3 brushes.

  5. A paper template set (like our ScrapSimple Paper Templates) with 2 papers.

  6. An embellishment template set (like our ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates) with 3 embellishments.

Also, answer the following questions in the body of your application email.

  1. Approximately, how much would you like to earn each month?
  2. Approximately, how many hours do you have to dedicate to design work each week?
  3. What are your goals as it pertains to design work?
  4. Why are you interested in working with Scrap Girls?
  5. What software do you use?
  6. Any other information that you will would be helpful as we make our decision.

Other instructions: Save your files as 600px wide, 72 dpi. Place them in one zipped folder and forward with your application email.

"What should I do?" she asked.

"I have confidence that you'll come up with the right answers," the reply came back.

Trying again, she asked, "What would you do?"

"What I might do is irrelevant because you and I are different people with different backgrounds, experiences, needs, and wants," her adviser replied. "We might want or need different outcomes. My ability to completely understand your options is limited by my inability to be you."

"But I need an answer now," she pouted. "I want you to tell me what to do!"

Her friend nodded, smiled, and replied. "I have confidence in you and your ability to think it through. I know that you'll make the right choice for you. And I will support you in your choice."

div

Isn't this all we really want and need - someone who believes in us enough to direct us to find our own answers? To have a friend who has confidence in us that we have the power to make good choices for ourselves, rather than to attempt to take over and tell us what to do... to have a friend like this is a gift.

"Friendship without self-interest is one of the rare and beautiful things of life." – James Francis Byrnes

Back to the Basics

What Are ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates?

ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates are one of my favorite tools, and I use them over and over again when creating my digital scrapbooking pages. These templates help pull together a layout quickly, if you are short on time, or when you have "scrapper's block" and need some inspiration!

If you've never used a layout template before or you're not sure where to start with them, today I'm going to give you a quick overview on the product and an idea on how to start out using them.

First, we have two different types of layout templates in the Scrap Girls Boutique. We have our single PNG file templates and our layered templates. Both of these files work very similarly. Today, we'll be talking about the single-layer PNG templates, and in the future, you'll learn more about the layered templates.

A question I commonly get is how to tell the difference between the two types of ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates when you're in the Boutique. That's very simple - if you take a look at the marketing details, you'll notice templates look different. Some are black and some are shades of gray.

The black-and-white templates are single-layered PNG templates. An example of these templates is the series ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Stacked 2.

ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Stacked 2

Layered templates have marketing images with shades of grey and sometimes other colors; an example of the layered templates is the series ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Day To Day Life.

ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Day To Day Life

Now, how do you work with these templates? It's actually very simple. First, open your PNG file, then open your paper that you're going to use as your background paper. Next, click and drag this over to your layout so that the paper is on a new layer above your layout template.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Place background paper above layout template.

Now, you are simply going to use your clipping mask to attach the paper to the template: With the paper layer active, in Photoshop Elements and older versions of Photoshop, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+G (Cmd+G for Mac users), in Photoshop versions CS2 and above, use Ctrl+Alt+G (Cmd+Alt+G for Mac users). You will now see your paper attached to the template.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Clip background paper to layout template.

Once you have finished with that, you will complete your layout by adding more papers and embellishments to the top of the template piece and by sliding your photos under the template so that they show through the holes. When you are finished, you will have a quick and easy layout that you'll be proud to show all your friends and family.

If you would like to take a look at even more instructions on working with layout templates, or if you've recently purchased a set and you're stuck on what to do with them, check out the 1 Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook (Free ScrapSimple basics eBook). This free handbook is full of tips and tutorials on how to work with all of our ScrapSimple items, including the digital layout templates.

For advanced users, if you are already familiar with templates and want to learn to mix and match them to create even more layouts, then check out the Scrap Girls 2009 Digital Scrap Link Class: Combining ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates.

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial: Painting Color on Digital Scrapbooking Alpha Templates

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS 10.5.8 - Leopard.

ScrapSimple Templates are very useful to get the exact look you want for your digital scrapbooking layouts. They can be used and colored in a myriad of ways. This tutorial is about one method of coloring ScrapSimple templates to get an enhanced color look.

Using the ScrapSimple Alpha Templates: Hodge Podge, open any letter, number, or punctuation file. This tutorial uses template #3. Color the top and bottom layers using the Hue/Saturation Tool (instructions for recoloring with the Hue/Saturation Tool can be found in the free 1 Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Instructions Handbook (Free ScrapSimple basics eBook).

Create a new blank layer above the top layer of the template title. Name this layer in your Layers Palette: "Letter Painting 1" and keep this layer selected. Clip it to the JWH_SSAlpha_HodgePodge_3_Top layer with a clipping mask (Ctrl+G for Photoshop Elements; Ctrl+Alt+G for Photoshop).

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Color both layers of the template.

Choose any color to paint with by making it your foreground swatch color in your Tools Palette. Now, select your Brushes in your Tools Palette and select a large, soft-edged brush. Using your brush and the foreground color, paint on the new layer that you named "Letter Painting 1." For this tutorial, a darker green was painted across the bottom of the number.

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Use a brush to paint across the bottom of one layer.

If you want, you can paint more colors on separate layers.

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Add more color variation using the brush tool.

In your Layers Palette, you can adjust the Blending Modes of your painted layers. You can also adjust the Opacity and Fill of the painted layers for the desired effect.

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Change Blending Mode and Opacity as desired.

My final painted number looks like this:

ScrapSimple Club Tutorial Screenshot: Final version of painted alpha template.

Have fun painting and creating with your ScrapSimple Templates!
