What is a Chat?

The first time I saw chats and crops announced in the Scrap Girls Newsletter, I was confused. As a former paper scrapper, I knew all about crops but had no idea how it was done in an online format. It's really quite simple - and a lot easier than toting crates of supplies around!

The upcoming chats are listed at the end of each Scrap Girls Newsletter. They are also listed under Upcoming Events at the bottom of the Forum tab of the Message Board. You can find them under the Calendar tab of the Message Board as well. All chat times are listed in Mountain Time.

You've chosen a chat you would like to attend, so how do you get into the Chat Room?

First, make sure you have Java installed on your computer as the Chat Room requires it. Next, click on the Chat tab of the Message Board which will take you to the Chat Room. It may take several seconds for the room to load.

Message Board Screenshot: Click on the Chat link.

You can join the conversation by simply typing in the box at the bottom of the window. If there are a lot of people in the Chat Room, the text can move along a little bit fast. There are a few tricks to make it easier to read. You can "float" or open the chat in a new window by clicking on the black outward-facing arrows. You will then be able to expand the chat window, making it easier to follow the chat.

Message Board Screenshot: Click arrows to float chat window.

You can also improve the readability of the chat by selecting "Double Space" and "Insert Separator" under the Chat Room's Options tab. Many members find either or both of these helpful. When selected, the separator adds a line between different members' chat comments. Play with the controls and find what works best for you.

Message Board Tutorial Screenshot: Chat room options.

Most Scrap Girls Chats have a theme and a challenge. For example, today there is a High Noon Crop on the schedule. The challenge is to create a layout using one photo. You may work on your layout before, during, or after the chat. For those who are familiar with traditional crops, some people socialize more than they scrap, others have everything ready to go before they come, while some focus on their work and participate less in the conversation. Digital crops are often very similar! Your chat host(s) will be available the entire time to answer any scrapping or Message Board questions you may have while you participate at your own comfort level. Chats are an easy way to make friends on the Scrap Girls Message Board. If you haven't been to a Scrap Girls Chat yet, come visit us in the Chat Room - we'd love to meet you!

Tips From The Pros

Five Different Uses for Digital Photoshop Brushes

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS5 with Windows Vista.

Brushes are one of the most versatile tools in Photoshop because we can do so many things with them. To get a little more out of your brushes, I'm going to give you five different ways to use them.

  • Use a Grunge Brush as a Photo Mask

  • Use a Brush as an Accent Behind a Photo or Photo Cluster

  • Use a Brush in Erase Mode

  • Use a Brush as a Journaling Mat

  • Use a Brush as an Embellishment

1. Use a Grunge Brush as a Photo Mask

What is a photo mask? A photo mask is a ready-to-use shape that you can add to a photo or paper or style. Scrap Girls has many photo masks, and some brushes can also be used to create photo masks. (This sample uses Brush Set: Junk in the Trunk.)

First, place your photo in a new layer on top of your background.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Place photo and stamp mask over photo layer.

Next, add a new layer on top of your photo. Using the brush of your choice, start stamping until you have covered the part of your photo you want to show.

Move the brush layer under your photo layer.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Clip photo to mask layer.

Clip your photo to the brush layer by holding down the Control key and pressing G in Photoshop Elements (Ctrl+G) or Alt+G for Photoshop. Or hover your cursor on the photo layer in your Layers Palette, right-click and choose "Create Clipping Mask."

Note: Make sure the edges of your photo extend beyond the photo mask's edges so you can't see the photo's straight edge peeking through. You can resize the mask or the photo or use the Clone Stamp Tool to fill in the gaps.

2. Use a Brush as an Accent Behind Your Photo

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Use a brush to add accents of color.

Using a decorative or accent brush in a color, add some accents behind your photo and maybe a few on top. This sample above uses Dynamic Brush Set: Spray Paint 5401.

3. Use a Brush to Erase or Delete Part of an Image

Did you know you can use your brush in the eraser mode? You can! Here's how you do it:

First, select the Eraser Tool from your Tools Palette.

Next, at the top of your screen, you will see a brush shape with a number below it and a drop-down arrow to the side. Click the drop-down arrow to bring up your brush window. Choose or load the brush you want to use.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Use a brush to erase parts of a mask layer.

Select the brush layer you have your photo clipped to. Using the eraser brush you just selected, stamp it on the part of the mask you want to erase. Parts of your paper are now showing through! (This sample above uses Brush Set: French Linen.)

4. Use a Brush for a Journaling Mat

Now it's time to add some text about our layout. Using a brush is a great way to highlight an area where we can add some journaling.

Choose a brush that has a good shape. Add your text on top. (This sample below uses Brush Set: Paint Stroke.)

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Use a brush to add a journaling spot.

5. Use a Brush as an Embellishment

You can use a brush as an embellishment by adding a style or clipping a paper to it using the technique we used in #1. For this example, I will add a style to my brush.

First, stamp your brush on your layout and adjust the placement.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial Screenshot: Before and after using grungy brush effects.

Next, add a style to the brush to make it stand out. Finish up your layout by adding your other accents and embellishments! (This sample uses ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Intaglio Biggie 7601)

Games

March Message Board Game: Going on a Boutique Hunt!

Remember as a child when you played the game that started like this: "I am going on a ___ hunt and bringing..." then you listed an item with the first letter of your name or a specific letter? We are playing a similar game on the Message Board during the month of March. Each day, a new theme and starting letter will be posted in the Game thread. Members will search the Boutique for something that fits the theme and post a link to it in the Game thread. Only one product per letter per round will be counted, and products cannot be used more than once. Collections and their individual parts are one product, and time stamps will be used to determine which post came first in case of more than one post per letter. Entries are to follow the alphabet, starting with the letter posted with the theme each day. There's a limit of three posts per person each day, and there must be another player's post before posting again.

PRIZES: Members' names will be added to a drawing based on the number of qualified product links which they post in the thread. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month and winners will be announced in the April 2nd Newsletter. Gift certificates will be awarded as follows: First prize - $15 Gift Certificate; second prize - $10 Gift Certificate, and third prize - $5 Gift Certificate.

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Contests

March Monthly Layout Contest: Do you have a good luck charm? Do you have something in your life that you consider lucky? For the March Layout Contest, scrap it! We'd love for you to share you luck! Post your layouts in the March Monthly Layout Gallery before Midnight MT on March 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
