LIFE MUSES BY RO and OTHER WRITINGS
A Designer's Life: Valerie Randall

Several years ago, we headed to New York City for a long weekend to be with family for Thanksgiving. It was a short visit, but memorable in so many ways, subtly influencing my digital scrapbooking.

Life Muses by Ro: Moving Cats

Have you ever tried to move a cat?

A couple of years ago, we moved into a new home. We weren't worried about moving our furniture. We knew that moving the kitchen belongings would be a pain, but it was possible. We knew that we could set up the beds, hang our clothing, drag our patio furniture to its correct location, and convince the kids to put their belongings away in their new rooms.

Life Muses by Ro: Today's Our Birthday!

Note: Six years ago today, the Scrap Girls Boutique opened for business. I knew it was a significant day, but I couldn't have foreseen just how much Scrap Girls has changed my life. As I look back over the years, what stands out to me are the people I have grown to know and love. Without the people, Scrap Girls would not be here today. It seems trite to just say, "Thank you," but the English language is woefully inadequate to transmit the gratitude I feel.

Scrap Girls, Etc: Homemade Cinnamon Rolls

Note from Heidi: The weather has finally hit the permanent setting for "Cool" this year, and it's time to start making warm, comforting foods again! One of my weaknesses is sweet breads of any kind – pumpkin or banana bread, orange rolls, and poppy seed cake. Cake is bread-ish, right? Well, it comes in loaves anyway. I can't wait to try this recipe from Cheré Kaye Edwards. Please excuse the sticky icing that's covering your newsletter today - sometimes I eat at my computer!

Life Muses by Ro: Tomorrow Arrives

Ro shares one of her cartoons. Check it out!

Customer Muse by Beth May

I used to be one of them - one of those paper scrappers who had bouts of digi-envy.

div

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

"Cool in the Pool" by Jennifer McCabe
larger view

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Armi had an adorable photo of her children's pool shoes. I wanted to use it in the layout, but I didn't want to take up "valuable real estate" in one of the frames. I decided to extract the shoes using the Magic Extractor Tool in Photoshop Elements 5. After extracting them and cleaning them up with my Eraser Tool, I duplicated the photo so I could separate the shoes. I separated them by selecting each pair with the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Then I pressed Shift+Ctrl+I which selected the inverse (the part of the picture I wanted to delete). I pressed Delete and that left the one pair of shoes. I repeated the process for the other pair on the duplicated photo. Then I was able to move them around the layout independently of each other and use the cute pool shoes as embellishments!

Whether you're scrapping pages about your sewing and quilting projects or just want to give your layout a quilted or sewn look, there is a wide variety of digital scrapbooking supplies in the Scrap Girls Boutique that will help you achieve the look you want. Way Cool Stuff - Digital Scrapbooking Product Review: ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates

Just recently, my appreciation for Digital Layout Templates has reached a new level. My days (and nights) are filled with caring for our newborn as well as the other family needs. There isn't much spare time on my hands. But I still want to preserve our memories....

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Using Color Balance to Change the Look of a Grungy Paper

One of my favorite perks to digital scrapbooking is the ability to match colors of my digital scrapbooking supplies to the colors found in my photos. There are many ways to adjust color digitally in the supplies we use. You can very easily change the overall color of an item by adjusting its Hue and Saturation. But there are beautiful grungy papers out there with subtle shades of different colors and a simple adjustment of Hue and Saturation won't allow those subtle shades of colors to remain. I'm going to show you my favorite way to adjust a grungy-style paper with multiple shades of color to match my photo.

OCTOBER EVENTS

October Message Board Game: Going on a Boutique Hunt!

Remember as a child when you played the game that started like this: "I am going on a ___ hunt and bringing..." then you listed an item with the first letter of your name or a specific letter? We are playing a similar game on the Message Board during the month of October. Each day, a new theme and starting letter will be posted in the Game thread. Members will search the Boutique for something that fits the theme and post a link to it in the Game thread. Only one product per letter per round will be counted, and products cannot be used more than once. Collections and their individual parts are one product, and time stamps will be used to determine which post came first in case of more than one post per letter. Entries are to follow the alphabet, starting with the letter posted with the theme each day. There's a limit of three posts per person each day, and there must be another player's post before posting again.

PRIZES: Members' names will be added to a drawing based on the number of qualified product links (up to three) which they post in the thread. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month. Gift certificates will be awarded as follows: First prize, $15 Gift Certificate; second prize, $10 Gift Certificate, and third prize, $5 Gift Certificate.

Winners will be announced in the Newsletter on Saturday, November 6th.

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.

Layout Contests:

October Monthly Layout Contest: October is National Family History Month in the United States but we can celebrate our family's history no matter what part of the world we live in. For this month's contest, we want you to do a layout telling a story from your family's history. Was there a black sheep in the family or someone who was a person of prominence? Did someone sacrifice a lot to keep their family together? Everybody has some story of note from their past. If you don't have photos of the particular members of your family that the story centers on, think about using a photo of a place where the story happened or just do a journaling page with embellishments that evoke a feeling from the time. Post your layouts in the October Gallery before Midnight MT on October 31st. Be sure to list your credits in the description or under the EXIF Properties. If your layout is one of the two chosen, you will win a $10 gift certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Club Concepts Layout Contest: Post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls Club or the ScrapSimple Club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery or the ScrapSimple Club Members' Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used. If your layout is chosen, it will be showcased as a Club Concepts layout winner, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
