Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings
A Designer’s Life: Gillian Hurst

It takes a lot of discipline to work from home. I consider myself blessed to have a job that I absolutely love, one I look forward to sitting down to each day. But, even so, some days it takes a little more discipline than others to stay focused.

Life Muses by Ro: Necessity of Life

A little while later, I grabbed a big box of Oreos and put them in the cart. “You wouldn’t let me get paper towels and you are buying Oreos?” he said, shocked.

I looked at him and replied, “Let’s get our priorities straight. Oreos are a basic necessity of life. Everyone knows that.”

Life Muses by Ro: Communicating With Aliens

The opening chords of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony rang in my ears as I ran towards the Beverly Hills hotel. I arrived at an old pink building that, while having the same trademark palm trees in front, was clearly not THE Beverly Hills Hotel. But I was looking for Stephen, so it made sense to me that it was off.

Best of the Scrap Girls Blog: Organized Shalae

Note from Ro: I found this good idea by Shalae Tippetts on the Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures blog. I seriously need to do this because I have menu-melt-downs on a regular basis.

Life Muses by Ro: Embroidery Floss Chewing Gum

I was introduced to embroidery when I was seven-years-old. Learning to sew bright patterns on flour-sack dish towels was considered a prerequisite for womanhood. It was also expected that I would work on towels, pillowcases and even quilts from that time forward, until I married, because this was how a well-trained girl built her trousseau.

Customer Muse: Living with Multiple Sclerosis

I first learned I had Multiple Sclerosis (MS) on Labor Day in 2006. I woke up with blurred vision and felt like someone poured lit firecrackers down my throat. I felt all the electrical connections in my body go haywire as I jumped around on the bed. And then... nothing. I felt dead. My husband took my stiff body to the hospital. I stayed there for five days (I don’t remember those days.) The neurologist diagnosed me with progressive MS and told my husband it was a poor prognosis.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted Soozlou, mtorres_usa, and teabaglady!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Did you know you can use a clipping mast to clip more than two layers together? Here I clipped a paper template from Theresa's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Patch It Up to another paper template from Syndee's ScrapSimple Paper Templates: On the Edge 2. Then on top of ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Patch It Up, I clipped a paper from Theresa's Charlotte Collection.

Scrap Girls Club Comments

This is my third month in the club and NO disappointments here! Everything is always beautiful and much more than expected! Now I’m thinking about signing up for the ScrapSimple Club.

Best of the Message Board

Question: I don’t know what I do, but I occasionally get blue lines across my image. There is one going vertical and one horizontal. If I save the image as a JPG, it will be saved to it. I can hide all of my layers and it will still be there. I finally found that I can zoom out and use the Move Tool to move it out of the way. Apparently, I have several lines on top of each other, because I have to move about three to get them all out of the way. I’m using Photoshop CS3. What is it for? What am I doing to get them every once in a while?

Answer 1: That would be a guideline. It’s there, but not really. It wouldn’t be there if you printed the image. They show up if you use the Move Tool across the rulers on the sides. I think you can turn them off under “View.” Sorry that I’m not sure where it is. I use them all of the time as guides for cropping or to measure things exactly, so I have them on all of the time. Perhaps, now that you know what they are and how to get rid of them, they won’t be so annoying.

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Creating Acrylic Bubble Words

Using the third option from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Acrylic Bubbles Mini 1801, a basic way to create a bubble word is to simply apply the style to a rectangular box and add a text box below it. What you get is a see-through bubble word.

But, let's say you want something a little fancier...

Way Cool Stuff Digital Scrapbooking Product Review: Transparencies

It seems to me that some of the other digital supplies seem to take center stage all the time. Those awesome actions, flashy styles, versatile brushes, gorgeous collections, cute embellishments and time-saving templates seem to steal all the thunder. After some research, I’m convinced it’s about time we give equal billing to transparencies. Let me share some of what I have discovered...

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Re-Coloring Using Match Color

One of the many things (and there are MANY) that I love about digital scrapbooking is the variety of ways to adapt and adjust pre-made supplies to fit the situation I need to use them in. Quite often, I will change the color of my papers and embellishments using the Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer, but I have found that there are times that I’m not totally satisfied with the results.

Lately, I have been having fun using Match Color to adjust the hues and I thought you would enjoy learning to use it as well.

University Updates

In January, we focused on antique photo restoration in Photoshop. Students learned ways to eradicate writing and scribble marks from old photos and how to restore them to their original black-and-white. They also learned ways to repair antique photos damaged by tears and scratches.
