Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

I have tried to do something special for all of you - something that has come from my heart. It is a Christmas story that will take the entire 12 Days of Christmas to tell. Each newsletter contains a new episode of the story. It is somewhat like getting a Christmas movie in a newsletter! We will leave the story up - linked to the home page of the web site throughout the Christmas season. It will be removed at the end of the month. And so if you have missed an episode or have gotten behind, please go to our home page and read the newsletters that begin on December 13. The story will run from December 13 to December 24.

Life Muses by Ro: Miss Manners does not live here.

I have just finished reading the book, Miss Manners’ Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior. While I learned many specific things about what is and what is not expected under various circumstances, I learned something more; I learned that I have been less than gracious. I have even been insensitive, awkward, inadequate, and perhaps, even rude. These gaffes have been particularly massive when serving dinner; as ever the errant hostess, I have been putting bottles of ketchup directly on the table.

Customer Muse: Waiting with Zachary

Tonight at bedtime, my youngest son, Zachary, was giving me a hard time about getting ready for bed. I said to him that Santa was watching him. He suddenly started to cry softly, something that he does not do very often. Yet, there seemed to be a deep pain that came with his tears.

He hid his face and yelled, “SANTA IS A FAKE!”

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted Soozlou, mtorres_usa, and teabaglady!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I just burned to use one of Amanda Sok’s double page spread templates. The only thing is that I had more photos I wanted to include. No problem! I added a fourth frame, reduced the size of the frames altogether, and voilà... it worked out for me!

Journaling: Our most precious time of the year... Christmas in our Mountains. For all of us, Boris and me, the boys, Nicolas and Frédéric, Lily perhaps in some years, and Alex included, it is natural each year that we are going for skiing to Fulpmes during the Holidays. To have some family time all together, joy and happiness. December 2007

Tutorials and Articles
Scrap Girls Club Concepts

December’s Scrap Girls Club’s featured designer is Brandy Murry. From old keys, stamps, and bits of trim to newspaper, cut-outs, and buttons.... This digital scrapbooking club celebrates old-style scrapbooking, where you use bits and pieces saved or found around your home. Let’s look a little closer and see what additional ideas we can come up with for this club.

Best of the Message Board

See how our message board members are helping each other with questions about strokes, clipping masks, presets, brushes, organization, kerning in PSE, and more!

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Creating a Gift Tracker

One sentiment that is always appreciated by the giver of any gift is a heartfelt “thank you.” Having a gift tracker is an organized way to keep a record of what gifts were received and who gave the gift to you or your family members. They are convenient to use at Christmas, birthday parties, baby showers, bridal showers, or other celebrations where gifts are given and received. By keeping track, it makes it much easier to remember to send your thank yous personally, in a handwritten note, through a phone call, or even email. After all the thank yous are done, you can even scrapbook your list to document what was received and by whom it was given.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Create a Family Photo Directory Booklet

Creating your own family directory is a unique way to keep track of all the important details of your immediate and extended family. This digital scrapbooking tutorial will show you how easy it is.

University Updates: Anna Mansfield

Two of my favorite classes to teach here at Scrap Girls are “The Hidden Power of Adjustment Layers in PSE: Create Eye-Catching Photos Easily” and “Yes, You Can Do Layer Masks in Photoshop Elements”. They are stand-alone classes, but they work hand in hand. The Adjustment Layers class begins on Tuesday, January 6, and the Layer Masks class begins later in the month. Watch for them in the Newsletter and the Boutique. I always enjoy teaching these classes because of the beautiful and creative altered pictures and layouts my students post.

Layout and Contest Winners

Congratulations to our Weekly Layout Winners, Three Tadpoles Mom and scrappin'doc! You must see these layouts! We also have our winners from the December message board game, Holiday Hoopla; our December Layout Contest winner, Bride; as well as the winners from our 12 Days of Christmas Celebration. Whew! Check them out! Congratulations!

Help Wanted!

Scrap Girls' Newsletter Editor, Heidi, is looking for a Newsletter Assistant.

This is a real job that will pay real money.

Requirements:

  • You must know Dreamweaver well. And by that I mean you should be able to take new data, put it into an existing Dreamweaver document, keep the data straight and have the document remain in its original state. You should know how to trouble-shoot common problems. You should know how to upload files to a website/FTP server, how to download files, and other basic functions. You understand Dreamweaver templates, what it means to modify them, and what the ramifications are to the associated files. In addition to knowing Dreamweaver well, you must also know how to code HTML by hand when necessary. A basic understanding of CSS is also required.

  • You must know MS Word and Excel very well. By knowing Word, I mean that you have used Word long enough that formatting a Word document is as easy as pouring a bowl of cereal. By knowing Excel, I mean that performing standard Excel duties (such as sorts, search and replace, moving data from sheet to sheet) is as easy for you as combing your hair.

  • You must be someone who can take direction well. Along with that, you must also be able to think well on your feet and in new situations. The newsletter often throws curveballs, sometimes at the last second. My assistant must be able to handle new situations and requirements with confidence and common sense.

  • You must write well with a cheerful sounding voice. Cheerful means that email from you sounds like you are pleased to communicate with whomever is on the other end of the email chain and that you are happy to communicate with them even if the request that they have made is ridiculous or if they have been rude when they made their initial contact. Writing well means that you use the English language in a way that sounds friendly, yet professional. Writing well means that you can write short articles or put together articles from existing materials when required. Writing well also means that you can quickly make basic edits and proofread documents when necessary.

  • You are a digital scrapbooker who uses Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. You have the ability to look at Scrap Girls Boutique and learn what is new in the Boutique and what is not new. In other words, you enjoy browsing around and memorizing what is out there.

You will work out of your own home. You will maintain your own computer equipment (including software) and your own Internet connection. You will maintain your own schedule within guidelines. There are currently three pieces of software my assistant will need: Adobe Dreamweaver (I prefer CS3 or above), Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, and an FTP transfer program.

While this is not a stepping-stone opportunity to become a Scrap Girls product designer, you will get to work with an extremely close, happy, talented group of individuals. And of course, you will make money working in a hobby industry you already know and love.

To apply:

Send the following information to Heidi at [email protected] with everything embedded into the email. (Please, no attachments.)

  1. Resume - to include all contact information.
  2. List every piece of software you know well. Don’t forget anything – even if it doesn’t seem important.
  3. Links to online galleries that have some layouts you have created while digital scrapbooking.
  4. Three references, preferably not related to you. Two of these should be people who can discuss your abilities with Office and Dreamweaver. The goal is to allow me to speak with people who have worked with you that can tell me that you do have the skills you say you have. I need my assistant functioning quickly, so this is why I would like to talk to someone.
  5. A 500-word essay about why you believe you would make a great assistant for me.
  6. If you have any online examples of your Dreamweaver work, please include links to them.

There may be a background and credit check prior to being hired.

Hope to hear from all of you wonderful assistant-type people out there soon!

Heidi

Here's how it will work. On Sunday, I'll post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and I will have a layout with a Word Art example in the gallery. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout!

div

Card Chat
Monday, January 12th - 8:00PM ET

Join Michelle (Shelbi) and Ngaire (Ngaire) for our new monthly chat, the Card Chat, on Monday, January 12th, at 8:00pm EST.

Do you use your digi-supplies to make cards? Do you want to? Instead of going to the store every time you need a card, we thought it would be better (and more fun) to use our digi stash to make any cards we might need for the upcoming month. Birthday Cards, Thank you Cards, Get Well Cards, various holiday cards.

The challenge for this month is to do a general “thinking of you card” or pick one of the January holidays (I have posted a list on the Message Board). Or, if you have any birthday cards you need for the upcoming months, do one of those. We will be posting our cards in the gallery. See you there!!

- MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Don't Risk Losing Your Digital Scrapbooks

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
