Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

I have always thought children are scary. They seem to always be running around like two-pint tornadoes; touching things with sticky hands, moving much too fast, breaking and messing up whatever is in order. They have limitless energy and disturb the peace and quiet. My whole life I have resisted being around them and involving them too much in my life. Until recently I have never had much of a chance to break myself into them as I am the youngest in my family.

“Tremendous problem,” he said. “I’m not sure how reasonable the expectation is that computers should last forever.”

“I’m not sure either, Frank,” his companion replied. “This morning my friend told me that one of her hard drives failed. It was just a year old.”

Need a little lift? Try one of these...

  • Go for a walk.

  • Take a bubble bath.

  • Paint your nails...

Note from Ro: I found this post on the Scrap Girls blog. Sarah, I have news for you... Julianne (my 18-year-old daughter) still tells me what her future family will be like. I guess you don’t outgrow this one until after your children actually arrive!

Myth 1: Scrapbookers are caught up.

This myth perpetuates the fantasies that not only are you caught up with your scrapbooking, but you are actually ahead of the events that will happen in the near future. In order for this to be true, you have to take pictures before the events actually occur so that you can scrap them in time for the event that will happen in three months or you might forget to scrapbook them at all.

There were plenty of reasons, one good one after another, to not have another child. Once the youngest hit middle school, we started seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. When we met 19 years ago, he already had two kids and I had one. Wouldn't it be nice, we thought, to actually be kid free? Get our youngest through high school and settled into college and then we could run away from home. Simply sign the house over to the kids and go be gypsies for the rest of our lives. Besides, I cropped up with an autoimmune disorder that discouraged pregnancy. Plenty of reasons, good reasons. Never mind that I still cried every time I heard a newborn cry. Never mind that there was a huge sense of regret in my life and an unfilled need to have just one more.

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted CharleneJ, Soozlou, and mtorres_usa.

Computer scrapbook layout by Amy Lemaniak

“Enjoy Life” by Amy Lemaniak

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the frame around my photo, I used Dinny’s Brush Set: Bitsy Frame Mini and stamped it onto a new layer. I then brought my photo onto my layout and arranged it as the layer below my stamped frame. I used my Lasso Tool to draw around the border of the frame. Then, with the photo layer active, I selected the inverse and then deleted the extra parts of my photo outside the frame.

Tutorials and Articles

November’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Brandy Murry and Mandy Steward. Their club is full of fun products that can help you document your photos and get creative in amazing ways. Our entire Scrap Girls staff has put their heads together and come up with some ideas to help you get the most out of your fun, new digital scrapbooking toys!

This was the very first layout I submitted to ScrapGirls as a layout artist in February of 2007.

Looking back, I absolutely love the colors and the journaling for this, but there is quite a bit that I look at and wonder, “what was I thinking?” Namely, the style of the bracket and photo inset don’t match the kid-friendly tone of the layout, and my journaling is too hard to read against the background paper. This photo is all about movement and you don’t get that feeling when you look at this layout. Definitely a good candidate for an extreme makeover!

Do you enjoy a bit of glitter and sparkle on a layout? I think it adds some magic to the mix! Let's look at adding some glitter and sparkle to spice up this layout.

I just love it when a plan comes together! This week, I was struggling with what I would write about for this article and I also had a separate problem with a photo I was working on. This morphed into the perfect subject I needed!

Perspective in graphics arts is the illusion of distance on a flat or two-dimensional surface. This uses the principle that objects closest to you will appear larger and, conversely, objects farther away will appear smaller. You can achieve this technique digitally with a few simple steps.

My landscape shots are more often crooked than not, but I’m a whiz with the Photoshop Lens Correction Filter. My indoor shots are usually too dark (or my outdoor shots are typically too bright), but I’ve got a knack for Photoshop Curves and Levels adjustment layers. My portrait attempts often render red and yellow color casts, but (thankfully) I’ve got a gift for Photoshop Color Balance techniques.

Congratulations to our Weekly Layout Winners, ginerva66 and mtorres_usa! You must see these layouts! Congratulations!

Join your host Betsy for the High Noon Crop every Wednesday at Noon eastern time. These crops are designed to allow you to work on your own photos and themes, simply giving participants a one hour goal, and a fun, new challenge each week!

On December 10th and 17th, we'll do a TWO-PART, end of year challenge! Create a 2-page layout or a mini album using the very best photos of your 2008. Part one (December 10) may be an hour of sorting, planning and picking photos, papers, and embellishments, and part two (December 17) could be all about the layout/album. As Tim Gunn says in Project Runway, “Use your time wisely,” and, “Make it work!”

You'll have one hour to create a layout and upload to the special High Noon Crop gallery. You'd be amazed what you can get done in just one hour! Meet new friends and have fun in the chat room! We hope you'll join us!

You can be inspired by the basic arrangement, the amount of photos, or copy it literally. All interpretations are welcome and encouraged!

Looking forward to seeing you there! We'll be meeting in the “00_Room_1” room of the chat. To join, click on the “Chat Room” link (above). Once you are in the lobby, click on the “Show Rooms” button (on the upper left), then select “00_Room_1” from the list on the left side.

Quote Chat & Challenge
Sunday, December 14th - Time TBA

Come join Pat (PBarnes) for the Quote Challenge Crop! Including a quote on your layout can be a touching and meaningful addition, especially if you use the quote to create your own word art.

Here's how it will work. On Sunday, I'll post a thread on the Chat section of the board giving you the quote that you will use to make your own word art. It's not hard, and I will have a layout with a Word Art example in the gallery. Then we'll meet in the chat room to have fun, chat, and create our Word Art layout!

I'll post the time on Sunday, as the time changes around each time to allow participation by our international folks. Everyone can participate and create a layout, even if you can't make the chat. Hope to see you there!

This challenge promises to keep you busy all month long. We're going to celebrate the season together here on the Message Board through tasks and challenges focused on holiday and seasonal traditions and of course there will be prizes in store!

If you complete all 15 tasks, you'll win a $10 gift certificate to the ScrapGirls Boutique! Also, there will be layouts to complete within these tasks. If you choose to only do the layout tasks, then you are eligible for a $5 Gift Certificate should your layout be chosen as a winner of that particular task.

Read each task carefully and compile all your answers and links into ONE word document and e-mail it to [email protected] at the end of the month when you've completed all the tasks. Emails need to be received by December 31st at midnight ET (Happy New Year!). Please put “Holiday Hoopla 2008- Username” in the email subject line.

Good luck!

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Club Concepts: We would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these Club Concepts articles. Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: If you are interested in sharing your freebie creations with your Scrap Girls friends, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Don't Risk Losing Your Digital Scrapbooks

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
