Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings
A Designer’s Life: dinny [Diane Miller]

I have some BAD habits.

I know that I should do something about it, but I just can't help it. I keep on doing it and saying, "It’s not that bad." Well, now it's become critical....

Life Muses by Ro: Live Life Now

Note from Ro: I just stumbled across this muse, written years ago. It affects me today just as much as when I wrote it. I thought I’d share it with those of you that have joined us since then. I hope the rest of you enjoy reading it again!

Life Muses by Ro: Yesterday's Over

“Yesterday's over. Yesterday's over.”

The alarm clock jolted me out of the darkness that surrounded me. I threw my hand out of the blanket and slammed it down on the snooze button. My mind attempted to push out of the fog....

Best of the Scrap Girls Blog: Life in Miniature Update

Note from Ro: Angela Blanchard has been making a cute dollhouse during the last few months. Because she has been using digital scrapbooking supplies to help her along, I’ve been interested in her progress. I just spotted this post on the Scrap Girls Blog and thought I’d share it with you. Wouldn’t a little girl adore getting something like this for Christmas?

Life Muses by Ro: Just Keep Moving

Note from Ro: I was cruising some old newsletters today, and I accidentally stumbled on this muse. I know I’ve published it before, but it struck me that it is very applicable to the world’s current struggles. It helped me to re-read it. I hope it will help you, too.

Customer Muse: Why I Scrapbook

Recently, I started printing a lot of my scrapbook pages. I found this great box album for a great deal - it's fabric covered and has two big rings inside to hold the pages in protective sleeves. Printing my pages is new for me, so I wasn't quite sure what they would look like on paper. I started printing the earliest pages I had done, resisting the urge to re-do many of them as I now have better supplies and (I hope!) better skills. I didn't realize that printing my pages would cause me to have an epiphany of sorts about why I scrapbook....

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted Pireps, CharleneJ and Soozlou.

Computer scrapbook layout by Stefanie Harris

“Got Candy?” by Stefanie Harris
larger view

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I don’t really have any “classic” Halloween pictures – scary costumes, etc. – so I decided to focus on the relationship between my daughters for this layout. I still used a photo from last Halloween, when everyone was gearing up to go trick-or-treating, but I decided to alter a piece of Word Art from Erica’s Bump in the Night Collection to support my theme. Using a blank tab from the same collection, along with a couple of staples, I typed the word “sister” onto the tab and covered the word “tooth” in the original Word Art. This way, I was able to make my point, and still have a layout themed for Halloween.

Tutorials and Articles
Scrap Girls Club Concepts

October’s Scrap Girls Club’s featured designer is Shalae Tippetts. This digital scrapbooking collection has the rich earthy colors of autumn as well as the homemade atmosphere of your grandma's home. With homemade stitching, embroidery, ruffles and aged textures, you can create some beautiful digital layouts showcasing your fall, home, relationship, or heritage photos. Let’s look a little closer and see what additional ideas we can come up with for this club.

Best of the Message Board

Read what our message board members have to say about ScrapSimple Paper Templates, ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Edge It PSE 5001, and more! (There's even a mini tutorial!)

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Creating Grungy Text

There are times when you may want your text to have a worn look. Sometimes, the look that your font gives you seems out of place because it's too pristine and clean looking. Luckily, as digital scrapbookers, we have easy ways to give any font a worn, grungy style with the use of digital scrapbooking brushes.

Way Cool Stuff Digital Scrapbooking Product Review: ScrapSimple Alpha Templates

Come closer - I have a secret to tell you. I think that ScrapSimple Alpha Templates are about the coolest thing in the Scrap Girls Boutique! They let you create perfect titles using the right colors, papers, and styles to make an ordinary layout - well - extraordinary! Let me show you how.

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Creating Book Jackets with Scrap Girls Products

I have a lot of old paperback books. Some are still with me from my childhood, some are great finds at used book stores or thrift shops, and some are just worn out from several readings. Even though old books have great character, sometimes they can use a facelift. In this digital scrapbooking tutorial, you will learn how to create a stylish book jacket for your old paperbacks.

University Updates: Digital Photography Simplified

For six weeks this fall, 25 Scrap Girls embarked on a journey to improve their photography skills. The main class resource was the wonderful eBook, Digital Photography Simplified, by our own dinny [Diane Miller]. The material in the book was enhanced with weekly emails of supporting materials and photo assignments.

- MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Don't Risk Losing Your Digital Scrapbooks

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
