Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings
A Designers Life: dinny [Diane Miller]

So many times I am searching the web for design inspiration and I notice something... lots of designers have a strong, identifiable style. I can find an image and know immediately who the designer is. When I look thru my designs, I do not see “one style,” I see multiple styles. I sometimes wonder if I’m a design schizophrenic! Is there something wrong with that? Do I need to define “a style” that is unique to me? Maybe I’m not good enough to have a style. Or, maybe I have a style, but I just don’t see “it” and others may.

Life Muses by Ro: Flying

“Climb in,” he smiled, holding his hand out to assist me.

I pulled myself into the tiny plane, buckled myself in and looked about. Smaller than any compact car I had ever been in, the seats were too close to allow me to hold my purse on my lap. Holding it close, I felt like my grandmother in church. All I needed was a handkerchief stuck down my shirt, some pink lozenge mints and I’d be ready to entertain a small child....

Life Muses by Ro: Contented

When you think of the word “contented,” what image comes to mind? I imagine a grandpa and grandma sitting on their porch, their hands resting on their bellies, smiles on their faces, as they gaze around their yard. They are relaxed because they own their home. They have flowers, a garden and bottles of fruit in their basement. Their grandchildren come to visit on Sundays and they drink limeade in clear glasses. They go on drives in their old car and stop at roadside diners to eat hot turkey sandwiches....

Life Muses by Ro: A Grateful Heart

I found this muse on the Scrap Girls blog by my partner, Valerie Randall. V (as we call her) has a unique ability to see beauty in small details and then use these details in unusual ways. I find her design sensibilities completely fascinating. She’s an amazing person to watch. Everyone on our team is very grateful for her. I think you’ll see why when you read what she has said.

Life Muses by Ro: Don't Touch Anything

Dateline: 1965

Place: Inside a car that is parked outside of the local 5&10 store.

Where: Fillmore, Utah (population: approximately 1000 people)

Customer Muse: Of All Places

Have you ever been locked out of your hotel room? Customer Paula Cymbala has....

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted Pireps, CharleneJ and Soozlou.

Computer scrapbook layout by Armi Custodio

“I Love This Job” layout by Armi Custodio
larger view

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the punched out look, I first duplicated my background paper from Angie Briggs’ Feeling Free Collection. Then, with the copy layer activated, I used the Magic Wand to select areas that I wanted punched out. I then hit Delete and applied a shadow to this layer to give the erased areas some depth.

I also wanted to give the gray background color some texture, so I clipped a gray paper of a similar shade from Amanda Sok’s Textured Cardstock Mega Pack 1 to the punched out layer. The sunrays are from Melanie Johnson’s ScrapSimple Paper Template: Pop Op. I just resized it, filled it with an orange color and used the “Color Burn” Blend Mode in the Layers Palette.

Textured Cardstock Mega Pack 1 Textured Cardstock Mega Pack 2 Lettering Delights Underwood Pica Font
Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Color Wheels, ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Pop Op and Lettering Delights Underwood Pica Font are also available.

Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0

Name of challenge: Mothers

Other Ingredients:

  • Font - Apple Garamond

ScrapSimple Club Concepts

July’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Brandy Hackman and Keri Schueller. Their club is full of fun products that can help you document your photos and get creative in amazing ways. Our entire Scrap Girls staff has put their heads together and come up with some ideas to help you get the most out of your fun, new digital scrapbooking toys!

Designer Do-Over: Ariadna Wiczling

I started this layout about a year ago, but never finished it. I was stuck. I'm sure that this happens to everyone from time to time! I usually put a layout down for a couple of days and try again. It took me a little bit longer with this one....

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Wrapping a Frame Using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flat Ribbons

ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates are a great way to create tons of unique digital scrapbooking embellishments for your layouts. I am going to show you how to wrap a frame using the ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Flat Ribbons.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Transparency Overlays

Transparency overlays are another great product in the ScrapSimple line that our wonderful designers here at Scrap Girls have created for us. There are so many ways that you can incorporate them into your layouts. You can use them to enhance background papers by attaching a clipping mask or applying a layer Blend Mode. You can also apply styles to them to make them stand out more and pop off the page. Another thing that I love about them is that even though many times they coordinate with a specific collection, they are versatile enough to scrap with ANY collection!

Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Selecting Natural Color Schemes for ScrapSimple Templates

One of the greatest advantages of using ScrapSimple digital scrapbooking products is the ability to customize the color; but choosing pleasing color schemes can be difficult. Instead of trying to create a color scheme yourself, you can take cues from nature. All that is needed is a few digital nature photos, either purchased from a stock site or something you’ve snapped yourself. They don’t have to be elaborate, nor do they have to be perfect. Just make sure the colors in the photos are pleasing to your eye. For this tutorial, an amateur nature shot will be used.

  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Opportunities for You!

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Club Concepts: We hope you are enjoying one of our newest articles, Club Concepts. Each Monday, we give you ideas on how to use your current club selections in many different ways. Well, we have realized that in creating these articles, we were leaving out one of the most important voices in our club... yours! So, we would like to announce that we will be looking for your help in creating these articles.

How can you get involved, you may ask? Simply post your new layout using the current club selection (either the Scrap Girls club or the ScrapSimple club) in our Scrap Girls Club Members Gallery. Be sure to list all of the Scrap Girls products you used, as well as a short (1-2 sentence) description of the unique idea or theme your layout shows off. If your layout and its corresponding tip is chosen, they will be showcased in our Club Concepts article, and you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
