Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings
A Designer’s Life: Amanda Sok

My father turns 50 on June 22nd. For weeks I have been going back and forth about what to get him. He's a hard person to buy for. He's a tool guy, but I know nothing about tools and I'm pretty certain that he owns most of the tools that he wants and needs. He's not really into clothes. He likes shoes, but only certain kinds - and he usually buys new ones before he runs a marathon. I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out what to get him. My step-mother has a surprise party planned. I surely can't show up to a 50th surprise party empty handed!

Life Muses by Ro: The Glass Wall

Life is telling me that I need a break. My computers are both going to the shop and I've taken that as a message that I need to declutter my brain, my house, and my soul so that my internal spiritual hard drives won't fail. I've been in danger of losing connection to my ultimate power supply because I've been working too much....

Life Muses by Ro: The Great Chocolate Cupcake Debacle

I'm still on my adventure. (See yesterday's muse, if you don't know what I'm referring to.) I'm going to share one of my favorite posts from my blog, if you don't mind.

Life Muses by Ro: Lost Vacation Photo

Here's a great post from Melanie Johnson I found on the Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures Blog. It's a wonderful reminder of why we should unearth our vacation photos, scrap them, and put them in books to enjoy.

Life Muses by Ro: Bird Games

I am still on my adventure. Since I am telling you about the adventure in advance, I don't know exactly what I'm doing, but I am on one right now. See Tuesday's muse for more information, about why I am on an adventure at all. Here's another favorite post from my blog for you. I hope you don't mind that I'm sharing these. I had to come up with this week's installments of muses in a hurry because this computer I'm using is clicking away at me. It needs to get to the shop!

Customer Muse: Grandmother

I am not a beautiful woman... just ordinary, but like most women, I was attentive of my appearance. Not overly so, though. A clean face, blemish cream, a touch each of blush, mascara and powder were all the cosmetics I used. When people guessed my age to be younger than was so, I secretly smiled inside and enjoyed the moment....

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted Pireps, CharleneJ and Soozlou.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

For this layout, I really liked the western style of the Durango Alpha, but the color blended in too much with the other elements. So to keep the alpha, I applied a silver style. Perfect!

Computer scrapbook layout by Janine Buckles

“You Are the Reason” layout by Janine Buckles
larger view

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I found a really neat way to combine patterned and solid papers in this layout. The squares that appear on the blue background paper actually belong to the paper that is in the layer beneath it, which is covered in small, colourful squares.

I clicked on the “eye” next to the thumbnail image of the blue paper in the Layers Palette, to make it invisible, and then clicked on the thumbnail image of the “squares” paper beneath it. I chose the Rectangular Marquee Tool and then used it to select individual squares and a strip of squares near the top of the layout. By holding down the Shift key, I was able to choose several squares, one after the other. I ended up with “marching ants” around nine squares and the strip of squares.

Next, I made the blue paper layer visible again, clicked on its thumbnail image and then clicked Edit> Delete, which removed squares of the blue paper, allowing the groupings and strip of colourful squares to show through. The edges of the openings in the blue paper were a bit rough, so I added a small feathered blur to them by clicking Ctrl+F. The default setting in PSE5.0 was perfect for the look I wanted.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts

June’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Amanda Sok and Ursula Schneider. Their club is full of fun products that can help you document your photos and get creative in amazing ways. Our entire Scrap Girls staff has put their heads together and come up with some ideas to help you get the most out of your fun, new digital scrapbooking toys!

Themed Thoughts: Boating

I love boating, although I don't get the opportunity to do it often. There are so many ways to enjoy boating... powerboats, sailboats, yachts, as well as activities like fishing, waterskiing, tubing, or racing.

I love to see what products from our wonderful Scrap Girls Boutique I can adapt to themed layouts, and these two layouts have to be a couple of my favorites! It's amazing what you can find if you think “outside the box.”

Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Using Layer Modes with ScrapSimple Templates

A couple of questions I often get from customers, especially if they have just started digital scrapbooking and are working with the ScrapSimple Templates for the first time, are, “How do I get color on my templates?” And, secondly, once the color has been added, “How come I can no longer see the detail of the template?” What I’m going to show you in this tutorial is a quick and easy method to use the ScrapSimple Templates. In this tutorial, I’ll be using the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Crumpled Corners.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates

I have to admit that I had been rather nervous about writing my first Way Cool Stuff article. But, all hesitation left when I learned that the product I would be reviewing is ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates. Up until a few months ago, I had never used these wonderful products. Of course, I had purchased several from the boutique, but I had never pulled them out of my vast stash of scrapbooking supplies and actually put them to use. It only took one layout to win me over. Let me introduce you to these wonderful tools, if you haven’t already discovered them!

Tutorial: Altering a Marble Composition Notebook

As the new school year begins, my kiddies each need a few marble notebooks. Over the summer, we make them unique! You can too.

- MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those “other” cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get “IN” on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so importantto you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Opportunities for You!

Customer Muses: Would you like to share your own Life Muse with our readers? To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products, plus a complete list of those products.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Protect your files with Carbonite Online Backup

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
