Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings |
- A Designers Life: Melanie Johnson
-
As the mom of three small boys, I could tell you what my days are like attempting to raise them and work creatively, but I suspect that many of you, especially those of you with small children yourself, can fill in most of the blanks. The short version is that my life is very sticky - literally - and I’m constantly challenged to find enough time to be creative. Let’s don’t even talk about the state of my house!
- Life Muses by Ro: Blessings Project - She Sang to Us
-
I have just begun a Blessings Album Project. To help me start off quickly, I asked Cherise Oleson to create some *ScrapSimple Digital Album Templates. She was so accommodating that she created both 12x12 and 4x6 versions of the album templates! Of course, they are available in the Scrap Girls Boutique.
The intent of my Blessings Album is to remember how much the Lord has given me and to do something that makes a statement that lets Him know I understand it. I also have a strong desire for my children (and grandchildren) to know that it is the simple things that make our lives full. What better way to do this than through digital scrapbooking? Through this medium, I am able to combine photographs and stories in an engaging way.
- Life Muses by Ro: Avoiding Digital Scrapbooking Meltdowns Part 4
-
We are now going to cover a topic that often strikes fear in the heartiest Photoshop or Photoshop Elements user: How to manage and back-up the styles, brushes, custom shapes, actions, patterns, and so forth that you use while digital scrapbooking. This is a long tutorial, so get prepared. It has to be because one topic leads to another, which leads to another... so bear with me. You'll be glad you did.
- Life Muses by Ro: Mr. Bean Meets a Columbine
-
Ursula made this post on the Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures Blog recently. What a crack-up! I had to make sure you saw it.
- Life Muses by Ro: Blessings Project - Hands
-
“Squeak, squeak, squeak,” the springs of my horse sang as I rocked back and forth in time to the music. My mother taught piano lessons to neighborhood children and I was enamored.
“Teach me too, Mommy,” I cried.
- Customer Muse: Names
-
I have four children. The last are identical twin girls; mirror image, no less. I took many, many pictures of them. Now, my children are in their forties. I have wanted to scrapbook them, but the pictures have gone here and there. So, I set out to scan a lifetime of pictures, to the age of eighteen anyway.
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!
Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!
Ro has recently spotlighted Pireps, CharleneJ and Soozlou. |

“Child” layout by Pat Bowman
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I thought the blues of the papers in the Becoming Collection would highlight my granddaughter’s beautiful blue eyes. To bring attention to her eyes, I duplicated my photo and then applied the ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Distressed Photo Sepia 1801 Mini to the top layer. Then I added a layer mask to this layer, chose a soft round brush and painted with black on the layer mask to reveal her blue eyes from the bottom layer. Remember when working with layer masks, “Black to Reveal and White to Conceal.” Once I was through, I merged the two layers and placed the photo on my layout.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

“Starring” layout by Kim Meeder
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I decided my layout needed a bit of pizzazz. I opened Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Curves and selected a swirl I liked. I created a duplicate file to work with by choosing Image> Duplicate from the top menu and closed my original file. Next, I dragged the swirl PNG file onto my layout, placing it under my striped journaling paper layer. In order to create a second swirl, I used the “Duplicate” shortcut of Ctrl+J. This placed a second swirl on the layer above my first swirl. You could also highlight the swirl layer and choose Layer> Duplicate Layer from your menu. To make my third swirl face the opposite direction, I went back to my swirl PNG file. I chose Image> Rotate Canvas> Flip Canvas Horizontal from the menu and dragged the swirl onto my layout. Lastly, I simply added a glitter style to each of my swirl layers. Voila... instant pizzazz!
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates

- Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Distressing your Photos
-
I'm sure we are all familiar with decorating our digital scrapbooking layouts with pretty embellishments. I think a lot of times we look past decorating the focal point of our pages - our photos! I'm going to show you a few quick and easy ideas for distressing and adding interest to your photos.
- Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates
-
ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates are so versatile and I love them! I find myself using them often on my layouts to complement the designer’s collection and to create my own embellishments to fit the exact color scheme of my layout.
One set of items that I use often are Theresa Kavouras’ ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fancy Folds. For my sample layout, I used ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fancy Folds 4. I love using them with patterned or striped paper on the fold and I challenge myself to make them look very realistic. Here is how I proceed.
- Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Scrap Girl-ify your iGoogle Homepage
-
Did you know that Google offers several ways to help you stay connected to your favorite websites? I enjoy my iGoogle homepage, which is the first thing I see every time I sign onto my computer. My iGoogle homepage features everything from snippets from the Scrap Girls message board to the latest products in the Scrap Girls boutique to weather in my area. Here's how I did it.
- Way Cool Scrap Girl: Sara A.
-
Once again, as on so many other nights, I cannot sleep. My sleep deprivation is getting worse and worse despite the fact that my wonderful female doctor, who understands me, gave me drugs to help me sleep. They work - for about an hour and then I am suddenly wide awake while everyone else in my house sleeps peacefully and is not even aware that Mom is up and at her computer. When my dear, sweet husband's head hits the pillow, he is immediately in deep sleep, snoring within seconds. When my head hits the pillow, racing thoughts of what I haven't done today that needed to be done and what I now have piled on top of that for tomorrow to do. This has been going on for years now and I am ready for it to stop. But, evidently, stress is going to be a part of my life for a few more years to come....

July Board Game: Layout Reveal
Whether you travel on vacation or entertain right in your own backyard, summertime means fun! This month, we'll be having some fun as we play Layout Reveal!
Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout that is partially covered in a message board thread. A new section of the layout will be revealed each day until someone correctly guesses which layout it is. Once a layout is correctly identified, a new layout will be featured starting the following day.
Layouts will be found in the boutique on product details pages.
If you are the first to guess one of the layouts correctly, you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the boutique!

Layout Contests:
July Layout Contest: Is the high cost of traveling keeping you close to home this summer? For this layout contest, we want you to be a tourist in your own town. Do a layout of your favorite place to visit in or near your town, a place you like to take out-of-towners when they visit, or an historical landmark. Upload your layouts to the July Layout Gallery by July 31st at midnight and if your layout is chosen, you will win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Mid-June Layout Contest: What kind of candy would you be? Scrap a layout that shows what you think you’d be - something sweet but tart, something rich and chocolatey, or something nutty? Post your layout to the mid-month gallery by Midnight ET, on July 14th, and your layout may be chosen to win $10 to the boutique!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you. |
