Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings |
- A Designers Life: Sheri Johnson
-
I have always dreamed of living on a tropical island. As a child, I planned a fictitious beach party. The party was to be grand, with hundreds of dollars of trinkets from a mail-order catalogue, decorations that spared no expense, and perhaps a lake (having a beach party in a landlocked state poses some challenges). The party was simply a dream that never happened....
- Life Muses by Ro: 10 Things
-
Ro made a list of ten things she can't do anymore. It's inspired her to scrapbook some of these memories. See what they are and be inspired to make your own list!
- Life Muses by Ro: I Should Have Never
-
I should have never what? Read and find out!
- Life Muses by Ro: Gotta Love Digital
-
I found this post on the Scrap Girls blog by Melissa Renfro. I got kind of envious while reading it because when I was raising my children, digital photography didn’t exist. We went through a number of years in which we couldn’t afford film and film development, our camera was broken, I forgot to develop the film and it went bad, or I missed the shot because I was too much of a cheapskate to take more than one or two pictures about a single topic. In other words, I missed valuable opportunities and we have painful holes in my children’s life histories. Nothing can bring those moments back and my memory has faded.
- Life Muses by Ro: People Pleezers Anonymous
-
I am a card carrying member of the People Pleezers Society. I should be, because I started it about 15 minutes ago. The society was initiated after a long tortuous day in which I suffered because I told someone that something hurt my feelings and I finally took control of a festering issue that I couldn’t get fixed minus my interference. I didn’t like it, but I spoke up and said that my feelings had been hurt and I took the risk that someone was going to be mad because I had finally taken the reigns and fixed a problem....
- Customer Muse: Legacy
-
As I was working on my digital scrap pages for my precious granddaughter, Bella, I started musing... I wonder if I am doing this for me and her other grandmother, or will she someday enjoy and appreciate these amazing scrapbooks documenting her life?
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.
Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!
Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!
Ro has recently spotlighted Pireps, CharleneJ and Soozlou. |

“Cheeky Monkeys” layout by Jo Corne
larger view
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To give my photo the ‘bleached out’ look, I first ran Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photo Basics 5001 Black and White with Color through it and then changed its Blend Mode to “Vivid Light.” I then put the photo layer over Sarah Batdorf’s ScrapSimple Paper Template: Family Branch “Cardstock”, which had its Blend Mode changed to “Screen” at 85%. This was then layered over Sarah Batdorf’s Sandy Shores Collection Mini Boardwalk Paper.
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Children
Other Ingredients:
Journaling: My two cheeky monkeys, this is what I call them. My beautiful first-born daughter and my handsome second-born son. From the moment they wake up to the minute they go to bed I find myself looking at them in total awe that they are MY children. That I gave birth to these two very magnificent human beings totally blows my mind! I hope and pray that they continue to grow up to be the wonderful people I see in their eyes, good people, kind people, caring people, loving people.

- Scrap Girls Club Comments
-
These comments were made by our great Scrap Girls customers and friends about Brandy Hackman's June Club, Abstract Expressionism, and Amanda Sok and Ursula Schneider's June ScrapSimple Club, also available commercially, which is available through the 14th of July.
- Designer Do-Over: Caroline Kaiser
-
Looking at this older layout in my gallery from my very beginnings, I always knew that one day it would need a do-over. I love the picture of my sweet Lily, but the layout doesn’t really tell the story. It’s about her first book, and unless you read the text (which is in my mother-tongue), nothing really refers to it. There is not enough variation in the colors of the elements, the patterned paper is too busy, and there is no design principle applied on the layout.
- Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial: Scene in a Book
-
Here's a wonderful way to create a three-dimensional digital scrapbook scene in a book featuring a special photograph. Product Designer Kerry Veale shows you how easily it's done!
- Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Tools - Styles
-
Have you ever seen a layout in the gallery and wondered how they achieved a certain look or texture? Most likely the secret ingredient, the very thing that puzzled you, is only a click away.
When you load a style, it is like taking a trip to the craft store without the cost of gas, or having to have a storage closet for all the supplies. Oh, and did I mention... no glue or mess to clean up after your project? With styles, you can get the look of glitter, sanded edges, metal, glass, texture, and many more cool effects.
- Digital Scrapbook Tutorial: Decorating with Word Art
-
Digital scrapbooking word art certainly isn't just for decorating your layouts. Here's an easy and decorative way to display some of your favorite Scrap Girls word art and papers around your home in an altered frame.
- Scrap Girls University Classes: Dynamic Fab 20: Stitching
-
My students are always an eclectic bunch and hail from all over the world. This can make for really interesting class chats and we always have a great time. Occasionally, figures of speech and slang do not always translate (or hold the same meaning) among everyone in the classes, but there is always one language everyone understands... digital crafting.
Whether they are brand new or seasoned pros, each person brings their own unique style to our classes. One thing I enjoy the most is watching those individual styles blossom during the process of discovery.
- Layout

-
Congratulations to our Weekly Layout Winners, pennynoel and gophergirl!
You have got to see these great layouts! We've also got the winners for the June Message Board Game, the June Layout Contest Winner, mimes1 , and the June Scrap Girls Member of the Month, Kaye (needadietcoke)! Congratulations to all!

July Board Game: Layout Reveal
Whether you travel on vacation or entertain right in your own backyard, summertime means fun! This month, we'll be having some fun as we play Layout Reveal!
Every day, a member of the Welcoming Committee will post a layout that is partially covered in a message board thread. A new section of the layout will be revealed each day until someone correctly guesses which layout it is. Once a layout is correctly identified, a new layout will be featured starting the following day.
Layouts will be found in the boutique on product details pages.
If you are the first to guess one of the layouts correctly, you will win a $5 Gift Certificate to the boutique!

Layout Contests:
July Layout Contest: Is the high cost of traveling keeping you close to home this summer? For this layout contest, we want you to be a tourist in your own town. Do a layout of your favorite place to visit in or near your town, a place you like to take out-of-towners when they visit, or an historical landmark. Upload your layouts to the July Layout Gallery by July 31st at midnight and if your layout is chosen, you will win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!
Mid-June Layout Contest: What kind of candy would you be? Scrap a layout that shows what you think you’d be - something sweet but tart, something rich and chocolatey, or something nutty? Post your layout to the mid-month gallery by Midnight ET, on July 14th, and your layout may be chosen to win $10 to the boutique!

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
