Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings
A Designer's Life: Cherise Oleson

When I was a young girl, people asked me (as people often do) what I wanted to be when I grew up. My best friend and I always replied that we wanted to be artists. I was blessed with parents who were creative people in their own ways and they never discouraged me from that thought. As I grew, I took a few art classes here and there to keep that interest alive. But, over the years, it kind of got pushed to the back burner....

Life Muses by Ro: Try Something Else

Try something else if that doesn’t work.

I came up with the idea for this muse and then began sifting through my memories, looking for just the right one to illustrate my point....

Life Muses by Ro: Stop, Look and Listen

Stop, look and listen before you cross the street.
Cars can go faster than little children’s feet.

What can this children's rhyme teach you today?

Life Muses by Ro: License Plate Game

Here’s another fun post from Scrap Girls Blog - Digital Scrapbooking Adventures. Brandie has a fun idea for documenting how she keeps her kids interested on car trips. Oh, how I remember playing games like this. Reading this post brought back a flood of memories of the alphabet game and “this car is my car and that car is yours” and more. What a great idea to create digital scrapbooking layouts about that part of the trip!

Life Muses by Ro: Avoiding Digital Scrapbooking Meltdowns Part 2

Maybe this isn't exactly the picture I should use when advising you to back up your digital scrapbooking supplies and your digital photos on DVDs, right? But it does speak volumes about what it is like to lose your data....

Customer Muse: Vacation

My first day home after a week in another time zone... up for the day at 5:00 a.m. Dave brings me a carafe of coffee, which I sip as I'm reading in my pillow-top bed with my new black and gold velvety robe on. Am I at a spa?

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them, just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members, showing layouts, and running contests in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted in it, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog so you don't miss what is going on!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Sometimes, in order to tie an embellishment in to your project (particularly if you’ve already used ScrapSimple Tools – Styles on other elements), the best thing to do is use the same or coordinating ScrapSimple Tools – Styles on that embellishment as well. In this case, I was using the word “tags” from Gillian’s African Beat Collection Biggie, but the colors didn’t exactly coordinate with my background.

The method I use is to duplicate the embellishment twice (so you will end up with three identical layers). On the top layer, you apply the Layer Style - in this case, Durin’s Unique 5104. At this point you’ll just have a solid element, which doesn’t work if there was writing there originally. So, you will need to merge that top layer with the next layer down. You will see now that the layer style icon will go away once the layers are merged. (Your software may allow you to “Simplify Layer,” in which case you can just duplicate the original element once, apply the style and then Simplify.) With the layer “Simplified” now, you can play with your Blend Modes to bring your original text back “up” through the Layer Style.

Tutorials and Articles
ScrapSimple Club Concepts

May’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Ariadna Wiczling and Syndee Nuckles. Their club is full of fun products that can help you get document your photos and creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Designer Do-Over: Shalae Tippetts

This is one of the first scrapbook layouts that I created with an old digital kit. I look at it now and am overwhelmed by all that pink and grey that is dominating the whole layout. It’s just too much and the picture gets lost in all of it. I didn’t mind the design aspect so much and decided to keep a similar feel in my new layout. The photo also has a lot of blue tones in it and was taken with a lower quality camera. This resulted in the picture showing lots of noise and being more pixilated.

Tutorial: Demystifying Clipping Masks

I love clipping masks and use them in every layout. Literally. They're a great and non-destructive way to “cut” shapes from digital scrapbooking papers, elements and photos. For your shape, you can use digital layout templates' elements, paper and embellishment templates, custom shapes, brushes and fonts. Here's how you create a clipping mask in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Easy Pages

Layout Artist Kara Swanson gives you some ideas for using Easy Pages.

Tutorial: Tinting Black & White Photos

If you have seen paper scrappers tint photos with chalk, here's a great digital way to get the same effect.

- MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

divScrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile to participate.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
