Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Ursula Schneider

I’m not one of those women who you’d consider to be “fussy” about her appearance. You know the kind of woman I’m referring to. She takes two hours to ready herself for a trip to the Piggly Wiggly and while there, every hair, right down to her eyelashes, is in its perfect place. I’m not one of those, truly.

That said, I like my hair to have a bit of, how shall I say... flair....

Life Muses by Ro: 360 Degrees

“Have I been so long time with you, and yet has thou not known me...” (John 14:9)

This phrase, which is pulled from a discussion between Phillip and Jesus, stuck out at me this morning when I was reading. You see, sometimes I think I don’t know myself. I should. I’ve been with myself for over 50 years now. I have witnessed all of the ups and downs. I have experiences the triumphs and the failures. I haven’t missed a thing. And yet, sometimes, I think I am missing a lot....

Life Muses by Ro: A New Obsession

It has been suggested by myself and... and... myself (since I can’t think of anyone else) that I stop spending so much time doing what I enjoy doing because I need more balance in my life. After I lectured myself for approximately one year on the topic, I began to feel quite guilty whenever I snuck away and did something I like to do.

Life Muses by Ro: Driving Me Crazy

Note from Ro: (This muse is stolen from the Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures.) A conversation overheard between V and Ro.

Life Muses by Ro: To-do List

How is your To-Do List? Are you pushing yourself too hard? See how Ro's looks and compare....

Customer Muse: Forgiveness

"It was 1954 and I was eight years old. Two days previously, my youngest brother had reached into a fire for a toy he thought was in there. He was in the hospital with 3rd degree burns to both hands. A day later, my oldest brother, who was one year older than me, developed meningitis and died 24 hours later."

Read how this amazing story affected Scrap Girls customer P. Perry and her whole family, and offers an inspiring look into the necessity of forgiveness.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Enjoy Ro's Muses? She now has a blog where she is posting some of our readers' favorites, along with blog-only topics. http://lifemuses-ro.typepad.com/life_muses_by_ro/

*New!* Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members and layouts in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted there, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog and see what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted:

Note from Ro: Answer a survey question and maybe you'll win a portable hard drive!

Okay blog and Scrap Girls newsletter fans...

I'm going to do a question survey in my blog and then draw a name from the people who respond to the question to see who wins this portable external hard drive. It will be perfect to take with you when you go to crops, on vacation or even perhaps, the Scrap Girls Digital Scrap Link Convention in Salt Lake City this October! (That is, if you hurry up and get one of the remaining slots.) You can throw your photos and supplies on it you want to use while you are away from home and then transfer them back onto your bigger computer or storage media when you come back again. Awesome!

Just enter your reply at the bottom of the blog post and you'll be entered into the contest. You must give me your email address (it won't be visible to blog viewers) so that I can email you should you win. It would be best if you subscribe to my blog because I will announce the winner in it, and that will make sure you find out if you are the winner!

Western Digital WDXMS1200TN Passport 120 GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive

QUESTION: How did you find Scrap Girls?

You have until Friday, May 30th, 5PM MDT to enter the contest.

Enjoy an eBook collection of Ro's popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to print, save, or purchase as a gift for someone you love.

Name of designer: Janine Buckles

Name of layout: Extreme Freckles

Software used: Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0

Name of challenge: Artistic Photos

Note: Commercial license versions of Brush Set: Graphic Frames Biggie and ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Rust are also available.

Other Ingredients:

  • Font - Resurgance

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To create the orange mesh strip, I first placed a silver mesh embellishment, from Durin Eberhart’s Xtreme Teen Skateboard Collection Biggie, along the right side of the layout. It looked great, but I wanted to use an even brighter colour, so I took the orange background paper from the same kit and layered it on top of the mesh. While holding down the Ctrl key, I clicked the thumbnail of the mesh layer, making those little “dancing ants” appear around all of the edges of the mesh. I inverted my selection (Select> Inverse or Shift+Ctrl+I) which changed the selection to everything except the mesh – the “dancing ants” now wiggled around the outside edge of the paper. Next I clicked on the thumbnail of the orange paper and pushed the Delete key. I now had a bright orange, but somewhat flat, strip of mesh. To add dimension, I added a bevel and a low shadow from the layer styles in PSE. My last step was to delete the original metal mesh layer.

Best of the Message Board

Scrap Girls Message Board members talk about digital cameras, shopping in the boutique and more!

Tutorial: Looping Ribbons Through and Around Other Embellishments

You may have often wondered how you loop ribbons through rivets, behind papers and around other embellishments on your digital scrapbooking layouts. For this tutorial, Product Designer Brandy Murry will be showing you how to loop ribbon through rivets and around paper.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Alphas

Layout Artist Brenda Peters gives you some ideas for using Alphas, and also shows you how to get perspective using your Warp Tool.

Tutorial: How to Turn Your Photos Into Pop Art

Turning your photos into pop art is a great way to display them in many ways. You can print the finished art, frame it or display on canvas. You can print it on transfer paper and iron it onto your shirt, jacket, purse, etc. You can also use your art to order some great personalized gifts such as mugs, mouse pads, etc. And, of course, you can use it in your layouts. Here's how to do that in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out! (You will only be entering the month and the date, so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed!

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
