Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Erica Hite

Is there such a thing as pregnancy brain? Are pregnancy hormones strong enough to throw a usually organized mind out of whack? I don't know if this is something other new moms-to-be are dealing with as well, but this is something new that I've been struggling to get used to for months now. I have to make sure I keep my little planner with me most of the time because if I don't write down appointments or things I need to remember to do, then poof, it's completely gone from my mind and I'm on to thinking about other things. Or, I’m not thinking at all....

Life Muses by Ro: Help! I Need Somebody

Help! I need somebody...

Why is it that we are afraid to ask for help? I shot this photo in the Los Angeles airport. You’d think that with thousands of people flying in and out of there (particularly since this was the week that all of those airlines went bankrupt) the help line would be wrapped around down the hall....

Life Muses by Ro: Mystery Dessert

This picture hides in my files, taunting me with its partially eaten sweetness. It has to be sugary because I can see the cinnamon sitting proudly on top of it. It looks like it might be some sort of bar cookie. Perhaps, it is a pudding gone astray....

Life Muses by Ro: A Swimming Pool

Note from Ro: Did you know that Scrap Girls has a cool new blog called Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures? If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. It is full of neat posts from our design team about their lives (including our world traveler, Moss). You’ll get to know them a lot better. I just had to show you this post by Brandy Hackman; the conversation between her two sons cracked me up.

Life Muses by Ro: Motherhood is Both Wonderful and Terrifying

10 Things Motherhood Has Taught Me

Since it is going to be Mother’s Day on Sunday, I thought I’d give you a few thoughts I have on the subject....

Customer Muse: Worry-Wart

Sometimes, I wish I could just snap my fingers and fix whatever it is that I'm worrying about. I'm a total worry-wart. Seriously. I worry about EVERYTHING. I can't sleep at night because I think of things to worry about. If there's not something I'm concerned with, I rack my brain trying to come up with something to concern myself with. I'm not joking. Deep down, I have a peaceful sense in God that everything will be okay, but I find myself thinking through countless scenarios of “what ifs” and “yeah, buts” until I just drift off to sleep. (Even then, I DREAM about junk.)

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Enjoy Ro's Muses? She now has a blog where she is posting some of our readers' favorites, along with blog-only topics. http://lifemuses-ro.typepad.com/life_muses_by_ro/

*New!* Ro is now spotlighting various Scrap Girls members and layouts in her blog. If you end up being spotlighted there, you'll get a little gift from her. Subscribe to her blog and see what is going on!

Ro has recently spotlighted:
Beth Lang

Enjoy an eBook collection of Ro's popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to print, save, or purchase as a gift for someone you love.

I wanted the photo to look a bit old, so I added a light vignette to the photo, so the edges look a little washed out.

Tutorial: Using Levels to Change the Look of ScrapSimple Paper Templates

If you want to try something new with the ScrapSimple Paper Templates you’ve purchased, I have a simple trick to show you how to do just that. Just by using the Levels Adjustment, you can add different depth and appearance to your templates!

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Papers

When I first saw that my article was going to be about papers, I thought, what can I write about papers, they're beautiful, but just papers. How can I make them exciting?  But when I really got to thinking about all the cool stuff you could do with papers, I got quite excited! I am going to share a few earthshaking techniques that I use with papers! Are you ready?

Tutorial: Photo Undertones

Have you ever looked at a layout that seemed to have good ingredients, but something wasn't quite right about it? Sometimes, a digital scrapbooker will use a lovely collection to create a layout, but if the photo in the layout has different undertones than the collection, the layout won't look quite right.

May Events

May Board Game: Bingo

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board Forum in May! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject line saying "BINGO CARD" and including your message board user name by Sunday, May 4th in order to play in the first round, which will begin Monday May 5th. Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call 5 random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when a new round starts. Everyone who sends in a Bingo card will receive a confirmation email that their card has been received. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please re-send your list of words. We cannot be held responsible for misdirected emails.

May Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: Life is short and passes us by in a flash. Scrapbooking helps us remember the good times, and the not-so-good times, too. We've all experienced loss in our lives, but have you scrapped about that loss? For the May Layout Contest, create a layout about someone or something you've lost and remember the good times. Upload your layout to the May Layout Contest Gallery and you could win a $10 Gift Certificate to the boutique! The contest runs until May 31st, at midnight EST!

Mid-April Layout Contest: Everybody’s life needs a little silliness in it. For the mid-month contest, we want you to scrap something silly. It could be photos of your kids, pets or yourself doing something silly, a practical joke you played on someone, or a silly story. Post your layout sharing something silly by midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls boutique!

To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique, send the following items to [email protected]:

On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out! (You will only be entering the month and the date, so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed!

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
