Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Kerry Veale

As designers at Scrap Girls, we are occasionally asked to write an essay about ourselves for the newsletter. It feels a bit uncomfortable to me, as I think it is more interesting to learn about other people, than to talk about myself. (That's one reason I love talking to you on the Scrap Girls message boards!) So, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite things; perhaps they will give you a little glimpse of me.

Life Muses by Ro: Nature is a Mischief Maker

I was going to go outside and take a picture of the forsythia because that means that spring is on the way. But, it is snowing outside....

Life Muses by Ro: You are Living Your Big Life

One of the challenges of writing a regular column such as this is that a great deal of the time, you feel that nothing particularly interesting or inspiring happens to you. You get up, shower and dress, eat the same breakfast that you’ve eaten for weeks, do the same work, talk to the same people, go to the same places, watch the same TV shows, and go to bed at the same time each evening.

Nothing has especially inspired you....

Life Muses by Ro: A Couch of Cherries

Note from Ro: Did you know that Scrap Girls has a cool new blog called Scrap Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures? If you haven’t checked it out yet, you should. It is full of neat posts from our design team about their lives (including our world traveler, Moss). You’ll get to know them a lot better. I just had to show you this post by Amanda McGee. She has almost (almost – not really – but almost) inspired me to dust off my sewing machine. Nah... but almost...

Life Muses by Ro: Pretty Tough

I caught him going downstairs. I can hear the vacuum turning off and on. He is supposed to be sitting on the couch with his foot up on a pillow, an ice pack under it. But, he won’t behave....

Customer Muse: The Sound of Pavement

I remember spring from my childhood as that time of year when we could switch from leotards to knee socks and shed those old winter boots for our spring Sunday shoes. The air smelled so clean and fresh. The sun shone bright on the waning snow and new grass. Even our coats might be left at home in favor of a white sweater. But, the memory that comes back to me year after year is the sound of the pavement....

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Enjoy Ro's Muses? She now has a blog where she is posting some of our readers' favorites, along with blog-only topics. http://lifemuses-ro.typepad.com/life_muses_by_ro/

Enjoy an eBook collection of Ro's popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to print, save, or purchase as a gift for someone you love.

Name of designer: Pat Bowman

Name of layout: College Dreams

Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Name of challenge: Dreams

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to use the photo cluster in one of the ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates - Layered: Frame It! Edgy 2, but the orientation of the main frame was landscape, and I needed it to be portrait. To change the orientation, I rotated the canvas 90 degrees clockwise and then dragged the photo cluster frames onto my canvas, positioning it where I wanted it.

Tutorials and Articles

ScrapSimple Club Concepts

April’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Erica Hite and Sarah Batdorf. Their club is full of fun products that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Designer Do-Over: Ursula Schneider

I have wanted to redo this layout for a while now. I love the boldness of the layout as it is, but the softness of the bride’s eyes seemed to call to me for a softer version of this memory.

Tutorial: Demystifying RAW Conversion

Photography is a huge part of digital scrapbooking and most of us aren’t professional photographers. If your camera offers RAW format, you might wonder whether you can handle shooting your images in this way. You know that you’ll get much larger files and that you are supposed to have greater control over the end product. But, what exactly does that look like? Maybe you’ve seen the RAW conversion dialogue and it looked way too scary.

I’d like to show you some basic steps on improving your photos through the use of the RAW conversion system. This won’t be a comprehensive lesson on the wonders of RAW, but, hopefully, it will get you started and perhaps give you the impetus to continue on down that road.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Brushes

Brushes are versatile tools and a must have in every digi-scrapper’s arsenal of supplies. They can be used in many ways, more than the usual stamping and distressing. One example I’ll show is how to create a cut-out effect using brushes. Before that, here is just a brief explanation of what inspired this layout.

Tutorial: Making a 4x6 Photo Album

With all of these great new 4x6 products in the boutique, have you been really interested in creating a 4x6 album? Especially creating one where your photos will be the focus? Follow along as Mandy Steward shows you how!

May Events

May Board Game: Bingo

It's that time again! Join us for an exciting game of BINGO on the Message Board Forum in May! Pick 25 words from the list provided in the forum and send them in an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject line saying "BINGO CARD" and including your message board user name by Sunday, May 4th in order to play in the first round, which will begin Monday May 5th. Each day, members of the Welcoming Committee will call 5 random words from the Bingo list. Match just 15 of those words to win a BINGO. You must be first to call bingo in the forum to win that round. After a winner is called, the boards can be cleared and a new round will begin the following day. All winners win a $5 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! We like to see lots of winners, so please remember that each person can only win one round during the month. Have fun!

If you miss the first round cutoff date, you can still play! Just send in your Bingo card at any time during the month and you'll be eligible to begin playing when a new round starts. Everyone who sends in a Bingo card will receive a confirmation email that their card has been received. If you do not receive confirmation within 24 hours, please re-send your list of words. We cannot be held responsible for misdirected emails.

May Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: Life is short and passes us by in a flash. Scrapbooking helps us remember the good times, and the not-so-good times, too. We've all experienced loss in our lives, but have you scrapped about that loss? For the May Layout Contest, create a layout about someone or something you've lost and remember the good times. Upload your layout to the May Layout Contest Gallery and you could win a $10 Gift Certificate to the boutique! The contest runs until May 31st, at midnight EST!

Mid-April Layout Contest: Everybody’s life needs a little silliness in it. For the mid-month contest, we want you to scrap something silly. It could be photos of your kids, pets or yourself doing something silly, a practical joke you played on someone, or a silly story. Post your layout sharing something silly by midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls boutique!

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
