Life Muses by Ro and Other
Designer's Life: Kerry Veale
As designers at Scrap Girls, we are occasionally asked to write
an essay about ourselves for the newsletter. It feels a bit uncomfortable
to me, as I think it is more interesting to learn about other people,
than to talk about myself. (That's one reason I love talking to
you on the Scrap Girls message boards!) So, I thought I'd share
a few of my favorite things; perhaps they will give you a little
glimpse of me.
Muses by Ro: Nature is a Mischief Maker
I was going to go outside and take a picture of the forsythia
because that means that spring is on the way. But, it is snowing
Muses by Ro: You are Living Your Big Life
One of the challenges of writing a regular column such as this
is that a great deal of the time, you feel that nothing particularly
interesting or inspiring happens to you. You get up, shower and
dress, eat the same breakfast that you’ve eaten for weeks,
do the same work, talk to the same people, go to the same places,
watch the same TV shows, and go to bed at the same time each evening.
Nothing has especially inspired you....
Muses by Ro: A Couch of Cherries
Note from Ro: Did you know that Scrap Girls has a cool new blog
Girls Digital Scrapbooking Adventures? If you haven’t
checked it out yet, you should. It is full of neat posts from our
design team about their lives (including our world traveler, Moss).
You’ll get to know them a lot better. I just had to show
you this post by Amanda McGee. She has almost (almost – not
really – but almost) inspired me to dust off my sewing machine.
Nah... but almost...
Muses by Ro: Pretty Tough
I caught him going downstairs. I can hear the vacuum turning off
and on. He is supposed to be sitting on the couch with his foot
up on a pillow, an ice pack under it. But, he won’t behave....
Muse: The Sound of Pavement
I remember spring from my childhood as that time of year when
we could switch from leotards to knee socks and shed those old
winter boots for our spring Sunday shoes. The air smelled so clean
and fresh. The sun shone bright on the waning snow and new grass.
Even our coats might be left at home in favor of a white sweater.
But, the memory that comes back to me year after year is the sound
of the pavement....
from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate,
too? Send your own muse to [email protected].
If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter,
you'll get to have fun shopping!
Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts;
engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another
person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have
to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be
the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Name of designer: Pat Bowman
Name of layout: College Dreams
Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3
Name of challenge: Dreams
Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to use the photo cluster in one of the ScrapSimple Digital
Layout Templates - Layered: Frame It! Edgy 2, but the orientation
of the main frame was landscape, and I needed it to be portrait.
To change the orientation, I rotated the canvas 90 degrees clockwise
and then dragged the photo cluster frames onto my canvas, positioning
it where I wanted it.

Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Erica
Hite and Sarah Batdorf. Their club is full of fun products that
can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a
little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this
Do-Over: Ursula Schneider
I have wanted to redo this layout for a while now. I love the
boldness of the layout as it is, but the softness of the bride’s
eyes seemed to call to me for a softer version of this memory.
Demystifying RAW Conversion
Photography is a huge part of digital scrapbooking and most of
us aren’t professional photographers. If your camera offers
RAW format, you might wonder whether you can handle shooting your
images in this way. You know that you’ll get much larger
files and that you are supposed to have greater control over the
end product. But, what exactly does that look like? Maybe you’ve
seen the RAW conversion dialogue and it looked way too scary.
I’d like to show you some basic steps on improving your
photos through the use of the RAW conversion system. This won’t
be a comprehensive lesson on the wonders of RAW, but, hopefully,
it will get you started and perhaps give you the impetus to continue
on down that road.
Cool Stuff Product Review: Brushes
Brushes are versatile tools and a must have in every digi-scrapper’s
arsenal of supplies. They can be used in many ways, more than the
usual stamping and distressing. One example I’ll show is
how to create a cut-out effect using brushes. Before that, here
is just a brief explanation of what inspired this layout.

What's Happening at Scrap
You asked for it. You begged for it. You demanded
it. And now, we are pleased to announce that yes, it is finally going
to happen... Scrap Girls is having a digital scrapbooking convention!
Here are the facts:
When: October 9-11th, 2008
- Note: Convention begins at 1:00 pm - Thursday, October 9th and
ends at 6 pm - Saturday, October 11th.
How many people may attend?
- Only 120 openings are available. Space is limited because
we have chosen a location that will allow us to provide a more intimate
experience for you. We want our attendees to get to know each other
and come away with friends for life! But this means that if you want
to attend the convention, you better sign up right now. (Besides,
you better get your airline tickets before the prices go up. That's
a reality. Get crackin'!)
- If you happen to miss the sign up, send an email to [email protected] and
we'll put you on a contact list. If someone suddenly can't attend,
we will have them post their opening on the message board, will email
you, and you can work it out with them to take over their spot.
Where: Salt Lake City, Utah
Location: To-die-for historic building called
the "Officer's Club", located at Fort Douglas
In the first three days this has been
available, more than HALF of our spots have filled! If you think
you might want to get in on this event, DON'T WAIT! Sign
up now, or you'll miss out in October!
UPDATE: Lynda Angelastro and April
Anderton from Digital Scrapbook Magazine have volunteered to come!
They are going to teach a class about how to get published, and they
are bringing goodies for our treat bags!

Girls Convention page in the Boutique!

May Layout Contests:
Contest: Life is short and passes us by in
a flash. Scrapbooking helps us remember the good times, and
the not-so-good times, too. We've all experienced loss in
our lives, but have you scrapped about that loss? For the
May Layout Contest, create a layout about someone or something
you've lost and remember the good times. Upload your layout
to the May Layout Contest Gallery and you could win a $10
Gift Certificate to the boutique! The contest runs until
May 31st, at midnight EST!
Contest: Everybody’s life needs a little silliness
in it. For the mid-month contest, we want you to scrap something
silly. It could be photos of your kids, pets or yourself doing
something silly, a practical joke you played on someone, or
a silly story. Post your layout sharing something silly by
midnight on May 14th and you might win $10 to the Scrap Girls

might be wonderful for our readers to share with each other
their own versions of Ro's Life Muses. To have your own essay
considered for publication as a muse in the column for our
special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected].
If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate
to the Scrap Girls Boutique.
Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have

we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available.

an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun
to see what YOU come up with for us to do!
from Ro: Scrap Girls is
giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of
course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday
presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure
because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No.
You did NOT hear me say that.
Anyway, make sure your message
board email address is current and that you have the correct
date entered into your profile or you'll miss out! (You will
only be entering the month and the date, so don't be shy. We
won't know how old you actually are!)

Ro personally uses Carbonite
to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives,
it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents
on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date
at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing
important business and financial files, because the backup happens
without Ro having to do a single thing.
Hard drives do fail. Don't
think they won't and that you will escape from it happening
to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen
someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.
You need several methods of backing
up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is
Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software,
operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives.
It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is
recommending it to you.
