Digital Scrapbooking News

What's New in the Scrap Girls Boutique?

Have you seen our new 4x6 products? I've been scrapping in this style for a while now, as you have seen with my Simple Joy Project muses. I begged and pleaded and threw myself at Valerie's feet to have our designers make some 4x6 products, and our girls graciously came through in stunning form! Our customers are already gushing about them; here's what they are saying:

-----

I started making 4x6 digital albums for family events like Christmas. It was much less expensive for printing, especially when I am making up to 10 albums for gifts. I have really enjoyed working in 4x6, it seems to go faster for me and my albums come together so much better. Plus, I can go to the dollar store and buy albums for each of them!

Now I see that there are several ZOOM Pages for 4x6 albums! OMG! You designers are awesome! They are beautiful, and it will be so easy to make mini albums with these (no resizing 12x12 papers!). And cards! They'll make great cards! I can't wait to get some of these!

- Julie (Burnsie)

-----

I just found some great 4x6 scrapbooks at Target for 99 cents! WooHoo! And the best part is that you can even slip in your own cover! My little 4x6 printer will be working overtime, that is for sure, and maybe if I get started now I just might be done by Christmas! LOL!

- Syndee

-----

These are great!!!! I was thinking yesterday that 4x6 layouts would be good for my new digital frame. It resizes my 8x8s, but they are just a little "squished-looking". These zooms are great!

- Tonya (regulargal)

-----

Perfect timing! My sister and brother in law will be bringing their new adopted children home from the Ukraine in a few weeks, and my sister had requested I send some photos of our family to help her children get to know us, since we live so far away. These will be just the ticket!

- kerryveale

And don't forget the cool new Page Protectors that work so well with these 4x6 products. Check out this beautiful example by Sarah Batdorf using the Brush Set - 4x6: Fancy Frames:

larger view

Customer Sue (schmoo) says, "Oh, the one with the page divided to fit multiple 4x6 would be good for an interesting way to display 4x6 mini albums too. I like to create 4x6 pages for my kids, but I don't want a pile of 4x6 albums for myself, so it would be nice to arrange them on one page and keep them in my 8x8 album for me. Loving it!"

And siskitkat says, "They could hold all of the pictures from our Adoption Day that I don't use in their album."

We have so many fun, new 4x6 products, we couldn't fit them all in this newsletter! Stay tuned the rest of the week to see what else we have, or better yet, run to our newly upgraded boutique and check them out for yourself!

Have fun...

- Ro

Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Melissa Renfro

I used to start cross-stitch projects. That’s it, just start them. I used to start pictures to paint with watercolors. I loved to start craft projects and gather up all my supplies. I started some stained glass projects once. I even started a king-sized quilt for my bed ten years ago. I enjoy planning out a new project. I love the idea of giving a handcrafted gift to a friend. So, why is it that all these projects sit unfinished in the dark corners of my craft closet?

Life Muses by Ro: The Door

“Where’s the door?” Andrew’s panicky voice bellowed as he ran down the hall towards my office. “Where’s the door?”

“What door?” I asked through my sleep-induced haze....

Life Muses by Ro: Doing Whatever I Want

Smooth grey skin slid under my skin as I unsuccessfully tried to push the animal through the opening in the net. I didn’t understand. The trainer told me that it would be simple to swim from one side of the tank to the other with my dolphin. Once we arrived there, we would pass through the net to the next tank. But as hard as I tried to pull on the dolphin, he was resisting my efforts.

He clearly didn’t want to go anywhere with me.

Life Muses by Ro: Mistakes Do Not Define Who We Are

Dashing off a few sentences in an email to my partner about an issue we are managing, I hit the “Send” button on my email client. Immediately, I was hit with a sick feeling. Something didn’t feel right.

“No. That couldn’t be right. I couldn’t have done that.”

I looked around the room for something to do so I didn’t have to be brave and face the mistake I might have just made. I wanted an escape hatch.

Gingerly, I clicked on my “Out” box and peered inside. Who had I sent that email to?

Life Muses by Ro: Beauty in Surrender

“Many of the great achievements of the world were accomplished by tired and discouraged men who kept on working.” – Anonymous

Nearly 50 years have passed since I was placed in my mother’s arms one cold November day in 1957. During the years since, through unwilling observation, I have discovered that as soon as I become slightly comfortable with my life’s situation, it shifts and I am thrust into the unknown, where I must struggle to figure out my next move.

Customer Muse: God is Listening

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. Name of designer: Laurel Lakey

Name of layout: My Little Miracle

Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3

Name of challenge: Free Scrap

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To make the embellishment and word art scattering down the left side, I opened the two leaf embellishments that came in the Stylize Collection and duplicated them until I had five, one for each word. Then I rotated them at different angles and spread them down the side of the layout. Then I made individual text boxes where I placed the title words. I wanted the words to look like they were stamped onto the leaves, so I used Shalae’s Stamped Style on the words.

March Board Game: Posting Contest

Are you ready for a workout? It's important to warm up before exercising, so try this with me. Open your hands and stretch your fingers as wide as they'll stretch. Now make a very tight fist. Again.... Stretch! Make a fist! Stretch! Make a fist! There you go! You're now sufficiently warmed up for this month's message board game.

It's time to put those fingers to the test and get chatty. We want to see you post the most! The top 10 posters this month will each win a gift certificate to the boutique! (Top 1-3 will each get a $10 GC, 4-6 will each get a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally, note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March 1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!

Remember to repeat your stretching exercises as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: This month we want to see your layouts of people or things that are on the move! It could be a great action sports shot, someone running a marathon, or even a child running through the grass. It could even be your pet flying across your photo. So, give us your best action shot and the story behind it posted to the March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you could win $10 to the boutique!

Mid-March Layout Contest: It’s time to get into shape, and we want to see your layouts about how you are doing it. From organizing your workspace, planning your family’s hectic schedule or trying to make it to the gym at 5AM to squeeze in that workout, let’s see how you’re shaping up your life. Post your layout to the mid-month gallery by midnight EST on April 14th, and if your layout is chosen, you will win a $10 Gift Certificatae to the Boutique!

If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best from your category! Friday will be Customer Challenge Day, so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out! (You will only be entering the month and the date, so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed!

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
