Digital Scrapbooking News

Notice: This afternoon at 2 PM MST, we will have upgraded the Scrap Girls Boutique to our new interface that includes the fun features we've been talking about. You'll know when the upgrade has been completed because the Boutique will have a fun new look! So come on by later this afternoon/evening and take a peek!

See ya then,

Ro

What's New in the Scrap Girls Boutique?

My family is used to hearing sounds from my office. I'm often on the phone, discussing company matters with my team, helping customers, or just doing boring business things. What my family isn't quite as used to hearing is the sound of pure, delighted laughter coming from me when there's no phone attached to my ear. I was trying out our new product line, Dynamic Brushes, and I just couldn't help myself. These are the most freaky-crazy-amazing things I've ever seen. You just can't believe it until you actually use them yourself.

They make brushing on your layouts SO easy, you will wonder how you lived without them before! Look...

It's like magic! I did this without changing my brush settings. I just "drew" these stitches with my mouse. The angles changed all by themselves and I didn't have to do a thing! I can simply draw around the edges of an embellishment to stitch it to my layout. Or, I can write in stitching using my mouse or pen tablet. Or, I can doodle my own stitched backgrounds. The possibilities are endless, and that's just with this one set! Imagine what you can do with a collection of these amazing tools!

You MUST try these. You will just die! They will change the way you scrapbook with brushes!

Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Angie Briggs

Recently, I was on the phone with a customer, when all of a sudden my husband came home with the boys from school. Instantly, my house went from the nice silence of the day to a complete madhouse. Backpacks are dropped at the front door, coats thrown over the couch and all I can hear is, “Mom! Mom!” Obviously, the customer on the other end of the phone could hear the changes also. The next comment was, “Oh, you get to work from home. How lucky you are!”

Life Muses by Ro: The Simple Joy Project Try Again

Everyone bends a few nails when they are whacking away at their goals. It’s not the failure to succeed on each attempt that matters. It’s the failure to try again.

My first few jobs didn’t go very well. When I was fourteen, I was hired to clean motel rooms. Although I quickly became known for my talent of cleaning bathrooms spotlessly (thanks, Mom), I hated the work and I quit after two weeks. I never received the pay for my work because I assumed that one didn’t get paid if they quit a job. I didn’t tell my parents about it for thirty years and by then, it was clearly too late to retrieve the money I had earned.

Life Muses by Ro: The Simple Joy Project Health Food

A good breakfast is more food than I’m used to eating.

Food and I have a strange relationship. I like it. I don’t like it. I forget to eat it. I eat too much of it. I desperately seek it out when I feel desperate for something to soothe me when desperate feelings have hit. When I am careless with it, it is a minefield of fat and sugar, followed by feelings of yuck. If I am careful with it, I feel warm and grateful that Heavenly Father would provide such wonderful things to enjoy.

Business Corner by Ro: Balance in Fun

Now, we have arrived at a fun section of the business plan: figuring out what you will offer potential customers or clients.

Do you know?

It may seem like this will be the easiest portion of the plan to complete, but you may be surprised.

Life Muses by Ro: Get Off the Freeway

I should have known that something big was coming when I was saved from extinction that day on the freeway. I should have died. My car should have jumped the barrier - or missed it completely - and have been hurled out over the ravine onto the train tracks below.

Customer Muse: Go For It

Customer Lynn Martin (lynniepoo) says, "Somewhere deep in the soul of my inner-most little girl, “it” is there... hiding. Afraid to break the rules. Afraid to disappoint another. Afraid to make a mistake. Afraid. But still, it is there. It is alive. It wants to breathe in the fresh air. It wants to create in wild abandon. It wants to be accepted... unconditionally."

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Enjoy Ro's Muses? She now has a blog where she is posting some of our readers' favorites, along with blog-only topics. http://lifemuses-ro.typepad.com/life_muses_by_ro/

Enjoy an eBook collection of Ro's popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to print, save, or purchase as a gift for someone you love.

Name of designer: Paula Wright

Name of layout: Forever

Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS2

Name of challenge: Scraplift a Member

Note: Commercial license versions of ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Framed Calendar Biggie are also available.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

This is a scraplift of mom_of_twins' layout, "Forever Summer".

Because I was scraplifting a great page and the background paper for this layout was so beautiful, special techniques weren’t really necessary. I did use frames in a different way. I layered five frames around the photo to add depth. I started with the paper frame around the photo and merged that layer, then added brushes, glitter and the wonderful Victorian frame from the collection. The Brocadelicious Collection makes any layout look magical.

Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club Concepts

February’s Scrap Girls ScrapSimple Club’s featured designers are Brandie Valenzuela and Shalae Tippetts. Their club is full of fun products that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

PSP Tutorial: Using Photo Mask Templates in Paint Shop Pro

ScrapSimple Paper Templates are a staple of digital scrapbooking and most can be used as masks. Masks are black and white or grayscale. Black hides or covers all, white shows all and grayscale allows different amounts to show depending on the darkness/lightness of the gray. Follow along as PSP Guru Dee-Ann Decker shows you how to use these amazing tools!

Tutorial: Add a Tattoo to a Photo

My sister and I took a weekend trip to Fort Myers, Florida, to visit my brother at the beginning of February. While we were there, we got haircuts, pedicures, manicures and massages. We had never had pedicures or massages before and, as we were driving past tattoo after tattoo place, we thought it would be fun to get one of those as well!

We excitedly talked about it. Would we get one? Where would we put it? What would we get? We never did get a tattoo, but how we almost got tattoos became part of our memories of that wonderful weekend. Being a digital scrapbooker, I want to add tattoos to this photo of our pedicures.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Styles

If I have to be honest, you don’t really NEED styles to make a great layout. But hey, women don’t really NEED makeup to look good either, do they? Well, whether you need them or not, styles are a lot of fun to play with and I am going to show you how you can make a layout using little more than a  ScrapSimple Embellishment Template and a couple of different styles.

Tutorial: Unique Photo Effect Using ScrapSimple Paper Templates

We use all kinds of tools and methods to create interesting backgrounds and, more often than not, we could be using these same techniques to create dramatic effects for our photos as well! Product Designer Keri Schueller is going to share a way to use ScrapSimple Paper Templates to create a very dramatic and funky photo effect.

March Events

March Board Game: Posting Contest

Are you ready for a workout? It's important to warm up before exercising, so try this with me. Open your hands and stretch your fingers as wide as they'll stretch. Now make a very tight fist. Again.... Stretch! Make a fist! Stretch! Make a fist! There you go! You're now sufficiently warmed up for this month's message board game.

It's time to put those fingers to the test and get chatty. We want to see you post the most! The top 10 posters this month will each win a gift certificate to the boutique! (Top 1-3 will each get a $10 GC, 4-6 will each get a $5 GC and 7-10 will each get a $3 GC!) We've got a system to keep track of your posts. If you want to keep your own tally, note your post count before you start posting on Saturday March 1st. Contest ends on Monday March 31st at midnight ET!

Remember to repeat your stretching exercises as necessary throughout the month!

March Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: This month we want to see your layouts of people or things that are on the move! It could be a great action sports shot, someone running a marathon, or even a child running through the grass. It could even be your pet flying across your photo. So, give us your best action shot and the story behind it posted to the March gallery before midnight EST on March 31st and you could win $10 to the boutique!

Mid-February Layout Contest: Faith is a very powerful attribute. On the Scrap Girls Message Board, we have all witnessed the power of faith. For the Mid-February Layout Contest, we’d like to see your layouts about faith…your religion, a leap of faith, your faith in another person or object…whatever moves you. The contest will run from February 15th until March 15th at midnight, EST time. To be eligible to win a $10 gift card to the boutique, please post your layouts in the Mid-February Layout Contest section of the Gallery. Have fun and Good Luck!

Ongoing Opportunities

Customer Muses: It occurred to us recently that it might be wonderful for our readers to share with each other their own versions of Ro's Life Muses. We know each of you has a wonderful story to tell. To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted, send the following items to [email protected] :

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products.
- A complete list of any and all supplies used on the layout.

If your entry is selected, you'll win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best (from the category you'll be assigned to shop in when you are notified that we are going to use your challenge idea). Friday will be Customer Challenge Day so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. Need help converting time zones? Check out the World Clock - Time Zone Converter. (Use 'USA-New York' as the location for the Eastern time zone.)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 & 6.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
