Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Keri Schueller

The story I’ve told myself about me, for as long as I can remember, is being challenged due to a recent event that has taken place. While I’m not comfortable talking about what happened, I feel a need to talk about what is happening because of said event. This is my story and I’m not stickin’ to it anymore....

Life Muses by Ro: The Simple Joy Project Every One is Important

In the middle of many, every one is still important.

Which leg is the least important? Is it the one at the very back? Or no... perhaps, the one at the far left? Or maybe it is the leg in front?

Life Muses by Ro: The Simple Joy Project - Give Me a Little Heart

My husband knows exactly which kind I like and when he spots them, he brings them home with just as much bravado as a frontier hunter brought home the sustenance he had provided for his loved ones....

Business Corner by Ro: What Are Your Strengths?

When you are writing your business plan (or rewriting your current plan) it is important for you to consider your strengths. I’ve heard it said that it is far easier to build upon your strengths than to focus on the areas in which you are weak. Don’t misunderstand me when I say that, by the way. You do have to be aware of your weaknesses because you have to protect yourself and address them. But, if you are to succeed, it is best that you identify what you are particularly good at and then go that direction.

Life Muses by Ro: The Simple Joy Project – All You Need is Love

Technically, we need more than love, but it ranks pretty high. According to Maslov’s hierarchy of needs, after our psychological (what it takes to stay alive) and safety needs are met, we need love. We need to receive it and to give it.

Customer Muse: Smile Sweetly

Customer Carole Ivener says, "When you’re faced with a barrage of negative feedback, it tends to gnaw away at your very spirit, and I was being thrown these rather depressing snippets on a daily basis. As much as I like to smile through most things in life, this one was proving to be a little more difficult than your average run-of-the-mill deterrent. Yet, I knew that what I was doing was the best thing for both myself and my son."

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Enjoy Ro's Muses? She now has a blog where she is posting some of our readers' favorites, along with blog-only topics. http://lifemuses-ro.typepad.com/life_muses_by_ro/

Enjoy an eBook collection of Ro's popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to print, save, or purchase as a gift for someone you love.

Name of designer: Christy VanderWall

Name of layout: Valentine’s Box Card

Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS3/Elements 6.0

Name of challenge: Love

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

For the box, I used Jan Hicks' Alpine Lodge Scrapsimple Papers on the outside. I wanted the colors to match Amanda McGee’s Love Notes Paper that I used on the lid. I opened Jan’s template and then added Amanda’s paper on its own layer. Using the Eyedropper Tool, I selected colors from Amanda’s paper for my striped template. When I had my striped paper looking the way I wanted it, I deleted the Love Notes layer.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts

February’s Scrap Girls Club’s featured designer is Syndee Nuckles. Her club is full of rich, provincial colored and textured products that can help you get creative in amazing ways. Let’s look a little closer and see what ideas we can come up with for this club.

Paint Shop Pro Tutorial: Adding Texture to Your Layouts and Embellishments

Without texture, digital scrapbooking pages may look one-dimensional and flat. Adding texture is easy, and there are a number of ways to add it when using PSP. Product Designer Dee-Ann Decker shows you how!

Tutorial: How to Use Textures

Textures are great products that give your background papers and elements amazing dimension. They let you quickly create your own unique digital scrapbooking designs. You can use textures on a solid background or combine them with patterns, brushes and paper templates to get a realistic looking paper. You can create your own embellishments using shapes, brushes and more. You can also give your photos that extra touch and add more interest to your titles and word art. Textures are very useful and versatile. Here's how to use them in Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: ScrapSimple Alpha Templates

When Layout Artist Amy Lemaniak found out that she was going to do an article about ScrapSimple Alpha Templates, she was really excited, because they are something that she hasn't really ever incorporated into her layouts. She's not one to use a lot of alphas on her layouts, but what better way to use them than with fully customizable alpha templates?

Tutorial: Sharpen by Using Unsharp Mask

Trying to sharpen a blurry photograph is impossible, but it's possible to sharpen photos that are soft or fuzzy so that they become clear and distinct. Let's get started.

Scrap Girls Member of the Month: Launa Valente

Meet our February Member of the Month, Launa Valente (Launa)! Launa shares more about herself through a questionnaire, photo and favorite layout.

February Events

February Board Game: Bingo

Yep, it is time for everyone’s favorite game... Bingo!!!

I know you want to play, so here is how you do it. Please pick 25 of the 80 words and phrases listed in the thread on the message board and send them in an e-mail to [email protected]. Please make the subject of your email "BINGO Card" and include your Scrap Girls forum user name (for example: BINGO CARD wxchic or BINGO CARD AngRoCamp). Please PUT THE SAME THING in your e-mail followed by your 25 words. I don’t need your real name, just your screen name!

You have until Midnight EST on Sunday, February 3rd to sign up for the first round of Bingo! Any e-mails received after that will be included in the next round of Bingo. I cannot be held responsible for misdirected emails. You do not have to register for each round of Bingo once you are playing. Your card is good through all the rounds. (You will receive a response from me that I have received your card. If you do not get that response within 24 hours, let me know!)

On Monday, February 4th, the welcoming committee will start calling words 5 at a time and keeping calling 5 words a day (weekends NOW included) until someone posts that they have a Bingo. What is a Bingo? You have a Bingo when they have called 15 of your 25 words. If the Bingo is valid (which we will verify using the e-mails that you've sent us), we'll clear the cards and start over.

Want to know what you're playing for? Each winner will receive a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Have fun! Remember you may only win ONCE. We want everyone to have the chance to be a winner!

February Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: February is here and love is in the air! It’s time for chocolates, roses and romance. Do you have a special Valentine? Who is the special someone you trust your heart and soul with... the person you would do anything for? Let’s pay tribute to these wonderful people by creating a layout for the February Layout Contest! Post your layouts to the February Layout Contest section of the Gallery before February 29th at Midnight EST for a chance to win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Boutique. Good Luck!

Mid-February Layout Contest: Faith is a very powerful attribute. On the Scrap Girls Message Board, we have all witnessed the power of faith. For the Mid-February Layout Contest, we’d like to see your layouts about faith…your religion, a leap of faith, your faith in another person or object…whatever moves you. The contest will run from February 15th until March 15th at midnight, EST time. To be eligible to win a $10 gift card to the boutique, please post your layouts in the Mid-February Layout Contest section of the Gallery. Have fun and Good Luck!

If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. Friday will be Customer Challenge Day so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. *NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
