Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Dee-Ann Decker

There is a saying, “When one door closes, somewhere a window opens.” Our windows were thrown wide open this year, with so many new and exciting opportunities presenting themselves.

Life Muses by Ro: Crisp Sheet of White

First snow of the season: There is just enough to cover the lawn in a crisp sheet of white. The sheet is threadbare and when the sun rises overhead, the remains of the snow will disappear.

Life Muses by Ro: Scrap Girls Aunties

Scrap Girls has taken on a life of its own and has become a testimony that people do care about each other... that they love each other... that they pray for each other... that they help each other... that they enjoy learning, laughing, sharing and yes, even scrapbooking together. Read this amazing story of how one person's journey has affected us all.

Business Corner by Ro: Write Your Goal Down

Your company’s business philosophy is how you will do business – or how you will look at the world through your company’s eyes. The company’s philosophy statement helps you to figure out how you are going to approach your work. Determining the answers to these questions in advance will be helpful to you when you find yourself having to make difficult decisions later on.

Life Muses by Ro: Seaweed Wrap

She convinced me that it would be a good idea to have a spa treatment. Perhaps, it would relax me and take my mind off of my troubles. Boy, was she wrong!

Customer Muse: You Are Not Alone

After reading many of Ro’s muses, customer Helen Tarbox has been inspired and encouraged to write down her experiences with anxiety. She started suffering from what was diagnosed as anxiety when she was 21.

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Enjoy Ro's Muses? She now has a blog where she is posting some of our readers' favorites, along with blog-only topics. http://lifemuses-ro.typepad.com/life_muses_by_ro/

Enjoy an eBook collection of Ro's popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to print, save, or purchase as a gift for someone you love.

Name of designer: Paula Wright

Name of layout: Camo Boys

Software used: Adobe Photoshop CS2

Name of challenge: Hobbies

Other Ingredients:

  • Font - Army

Directions for blending a photo into a paper:

In keeping with the theme, I wanted to create an army camo alpha for the title of this page. To create your own alpha, open a new document and type in the title. I used the Army font off the internet and scaled it to about the size I wanted in my layout. Next, Rasterize (Simplify in PSE) the type, then drag and drop the camo paper onto your layout. Scale the paper down to about 50% of the original size. Look at the design of the paper and decide what part you want to cut the title from. I liked the bottom of the page where there was interesting texture, color and contrast. Move the type to that area of the page and select the type with the Magic Wand Tool. When the type is outlined with marching ants, Select> Inverse, and click on the paper layer. Now, just Delete the paper and you have your title in camo. You have many choices to complete your title. You can add a drop shadow, a stroke, or bevel and emboss depending on the look and the amount of dimension you want. This is a simple way to create custom titles on your scrapbook pages.

Best of the Message Board

Our amazing forum members answer questions about Shadow Styles, Paper Templates, locking pixels and more!

Designer Do-Over: Laurel Lakey

Layout Designer Laurel Lakey was searching through some of her older layouts, and chose to re-do this particular one because it doesn’t really tell the story she wanted to tell, and it looks a little boring. But, it’s got a good basic structure, so she didn't have to change too much to make it shine.

Tutorial: Using Templates, Brushes and Styles to Create an Aged Paper Effect

Crumpled, ripped, curled and stained aren’t typically delightful descriptors, but add anything of the sort to my digital scrapbook page and Product Designer Keri Schueller is quite delighted. There are numerous ways to achieve this kind of aged paper effect digitally and she's going to share a few with you here.

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Assemble Your Own Pretty Pink Tags

Do you have clear business card case leftovers at home? You can make them into changeable labels for your kids’ books or journals! Follow along as Layout Designer Indah Permata Sari shows you how!

Tutorial: Using Sketches in Your Layout With a Twist

As the resident “Queen of Sketches,” the question Product Designer Marnie Adams often gets asked is, “What is a sketch and what do I do with it?” And, the answer is... a sketch is a basic outline of a layout that is used to show placement of the photos, embellishments, title and journaling. The sketch may be rotated, flipped, cropped, adjusted or rearranged. The beauty of a sketch is that it is a suggestion of how a layout might look – the ultimate creative decisions are made by you.

January Events

January Board Game: Progressive Word Scramble

Here's how it works. The object of the game is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess is made.

The designer's name is not included as part of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency") may be given as part of the puzzle.

Here is an example:

Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty

Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens

Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers

Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection

Be the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead. How about taking some time to reflect on the year that has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you made last year at this time and scrap about how you did at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts highlighting the year just past.

Mid-January Layout Contest: The new year can be a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. Maybe you've recently reorganized a room, put an addition on or remodeled your home. Or, maybe you are working on turning over a new leaf in your life. We want to see your layouts about something that's giving you a fresh start (past or present). Post your layouts in the correct gallery, and if your layout is chosen, you'll win a $10 GC to the Boutique! All layouts are due by February 14, 2008 at Midnight, ET!

Ongoing Opportunities

Customer Muses: It occurred to us recently that it might be wonderful for our readers to share with each other their own versions of Ro's Life Muses. We know each of you has a wonderful story to tell. To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! If you would like to be spotlighted and win a $25 Gift Certificate to the Boutique, send the following items to [email protected] :

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products and its complete supply list.
- A 100-pixels wide, 72 dpi picture of yourself. (How fun to see who you are!)
- Permission to use your statement.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best (from the category you'll be assigned to shop in when you are notified that we are going to use your challenge idea). Friday will be Customer Challenge Day so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that. Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. Need help converting time zones? Check out the World Clock - Time Zone Converter. (Use 'USA-New York' as the location for the Eastern time zone.)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed!

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed for MS Word

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.

Hard drives do fail. Don't think they won't and that you will escape from it happening to you forever. Just get a plan for managing what will happen someday and save yourself a lot of pain, sweat, agony and tears.

You need several methods of backing up in case one of them fail. Acronis True Image 11.0 is Ro's personal choice for creating a complete back up (software, operating system, settings... you name it) of her hard drives. It is easy to use (no excess geek speak) which is why she is recommending it to you.
