Life Muses by Ro and Other Writings

A Designer's Life: Ariadna Wiczling

One of my favorite books is “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. The author describes differences between children's and adult's ways of describing the world very well. Let me introduce myself in these two ways.... Also, find out Ariadna's current favorite product and see a new layout by her using it!

Life Muses by Ro: Dog Hair and Light Bulbs

This particular muse is one that I’ve shown you in a “Best of Ro” column before. But it surprises me every time I read it because I actually said something very useful in it. It is very applicable to my current situation. I hope you enjoy it.

It’s okay to fail.

Life Muses by Ro: Super Powers?

I was just told that I have special powers because I can anticipate that hard drives fail. Actually, I don't have super powers, but I have had the sad experience of dealing with many hard drive deaths of my own, so it is a topic that I like to get on my little soap box about fairly regularly. (One notable experience was preceded by the most horrendous knocking sound imaginable. It made me think that my computer was going to explode all over my office. I wanted to duck and cover.)

But IF I DID have special powers, know what I'd do?

Business Corner by Ro: What is a Good Description?

If you were standing in a grocery store line and someone asked you about your business, could you quickly describe what you do in a manner that would make them want to know more?

It is surprising to learn that a high number of business owners cannot do this adequately. They may mumble something such as, “I own a grocery store” or “I create scrapbooks for people” or even, “I teach music lessons.” While these statements are beginning points and are generally adequate for social situations, they are not complete enough to allow you to understand your business. It is critical for your business that you write a complete company description for your business plan.

Life Muses by Ro: Conquer the Remote Control

Why?

  • Why do we want dark hair when we have blond hair and blond hair when we have dark hair?

  • Why is it that the cable breaks right at the critical moment in the movie?

  • Why are DVD players so hard to run? And why do you have to have three remote controls to work everything when you want to watch a movie? And why don't universal remote controls work? If they aren't universal, why do they call them that?

Customer Muse: Life Is Precious

Customer Rachel Hutzley muses, "I like the saying, "Life is precious, handle with care." If we owned a Ming Dynasty vase, wouldn't we give it special care and attention? Wouldn't we make sure it isn't dusty and has a special light shining on it to show how beautiful it is?"

Note from Ro: Would you like to earn a $20 Gift Certificate, too? Send your own muse to [email protected]. If it is selected for publication in the Scrap Girls newsletter, you'll get to have fun shopping!

Muse: To be absorbed in one's thoughts; engage in meditation. Not intended to solve the world's problems, another person's problems, or to cover topics completely. One does not have to agree with musings to enjoy them just as one does not have to be the same as someone else to appreciate who they are.

Enjoy Ro's Muses? She now has a blog where she is posting some of our readers' favorites, along with blog-only topics. http://lifemuses-ro.typepad.com/life_muses_by_ro/

Enjoy an eBook collection of Ro's popular Life Muses from the first half of 2006 in an easy way to print, save, or purchase as a gift for someone you love.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To get the blown out and aged look of my photo, I first duplicated my photo layer and applied the "Overlay" Blend Mode to the top photo layer. Then, I used Melissa Renfro’s ScrapSimple Tools – Actions: Photo Basics PSE and used the "Sepia with Color" option. I then used Mandy Steward’s ScrapSimple Tools – Styles: Inked Edges to apply an inked border to my photo.

Scrap Girls Club Concepts

January’s Scrap Girls Club’s featured designer is Amanda Sok. This gorgeous group of digital scrapbooking products can obviously be used for musical themes, but you know we can come up with more ways for you to use this amazing Club than just that! Let's go!

PSP Tutorial: Using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Inky Folded Borders

One of the things that Product Designer Dee-Ann Decker loves about digital scrapbooking is being able to add realism to her layouts without all of the bulk and lumpiness of traditional paper. There are many templates that allow you to create natural effects like rolled or folded paper. Dee-Ann will be using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Inky Folded Borders for this tutorial, but the technique is the same for other ScrapSimple Templates when you would like to maintain the texture and appearance of the underlying template.

Tutorial: Add Realistic Embroidery to Your Papers

Adding stitching and embroidery to your digital scrapbooking layouts is fairly easy, especially with the use of some of the realistic stitching styles that are available in the Scrap Girls boutique. Follow along as Product Designer Erica Hite shows you how, step-by-step, using some of her GORGEOUS products available now!

Way Cool Stuff Product Review: Easy Pages

Layout Designer Laurel Lakey says, "Okay, I know you’ve all been there – you have a whole album of layouts to finish but you’re just not feeling creative enough to start from scratch. Hey, I’ve been there! And I have the answer – Easy Pages! Now before you scoff at me and tell me that Easy Pages are somehow ‘cheating,’ I want you to know that there is no shame in using an Easy Page. I mean, what could be better than having the bulk of your layout finished, and all you have to do is add some photos, journaling and a title? I’ll show you how EASY they are to use (pun intended)!"

Tutorial: Getting Organized In Designer Style

Sometimes Product Designer Diane Miller [dinny] gets a little carried away when she's organizing. Why should she make boring labels, when she can make them fun and creative? You can too; read this tutorial to see how!

January Events

January Board Game: Progressive Word Scramble

Here's how it works. The object of the game is to correctly guess a boutique item by solving clues and unscrambling letters we give you. Each day you are given a letter or several letters of the name of a boutique item as well as a clue. You won't know how many letters are in the boutique item name until it is complete. We will keep giving clues until a correct guess is made.

The designer's name is not included as part of the puzzle, and the word "collection" is not included as part of the puzzle either. Letters from any other words in product names (such as "biggie", "brush", or "transparency") may be given as part of the puzzle.

Here is an example:

Day 1 Letters: i
Day 1 Hint: I'm oh so pretty

Day 2 Letters: t n
Day 2 Hint: I know you'll love my soft reds, and blues, and greens

Day 3 Letters: u o i
Day 3 Hint: It was so nice of Angie to give me some flowers

Answer: Angie Briggs' Intuition Collection

Be the first to answer it correctly and win a $5.00 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! You are only allowed ONE guess per daily clue, and you are only allowed ONE win per month. When you make your guess, you MUST link it to the boutique item you are referencing. We will play the game daily during the entire month of January. When a correct answer is given, the new puzzle will start the following day.

January Layout Contests:

Layout Contest: You could win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Boutique! With New Year’s Day here, we tend to think in terms of our resolutions for the year ahead. How about taking some time to reflect on the year that has just passed? You could look at the resolutions you made last year at this time and scrap about how you did at keeping them. Or on a less serious note, you could do a retrospective of your year with a few (or several) photos that highlight your year. Maybe there is one event in your year that was extra special, like a wedding, a birth, or a death in the family. So let’s see your layouts highlighting the year just past.

Mid-December Layout Contest: The end of 2007 is upon us. 2008 will be starting soon! Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions? We want you to scrap them! Show us your layouts featuring your New Year Resolutions and you could win a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique! Post your layouts to the Monthly Contest Gallery between December 15th and January 14th to be eligible. Good Luck!

Ongoing Opportunities

We know each of you has a wonderful story to tell. To have your own essay considered for publication as a muse in the column for our special Saturday newsletter, send your essay to [email protected]. If your essay is selected, you will receive a $20 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique.

Way Cool Scrap Girl: We are so excited to have all of you meet some of the amazing people that have become Scrap Girls! We'd love to introduce you to our readers, too! If you would like to be spotlighted, send the following items to [email protected] :

- 500-900 word essay about your experience with digital scrapbooking, Scrap Girls, and specific examples of how we have helped you.
- A 600-pixel wide, 72 dpi copy of a layout you've created that uses Scrap Girls products.

Customer Freebies: We get a lot of requests from you asking if you could share a freebie with your Scrap Girls friends, and we have come up with a way to do it. On Saturdays we will be sharing freebies created by you, if they are available. If you are interested in participating, download this PDF with the specifications and you'll be on your way. Please note that if you choose to use any Scrap Girls tools or templates in your submission, commercial licenses for those products are required. (Even our own designers must purchase commercial licenses for any items they wish to use in a non-personal manner!) If your freebie is chosen, you will receive a $10 Gift Certificate to the Scrap Girls Boutique!

Suggest a Challenge, Win a Prize! Have a great idea for a gallery layout challenge? Submit it to [email protected]. If your challenge idea is chosen, you will win a prize (such as a brush set, paper set, embellishment set, etc.). The prize will be a surprise, but you'll be sure to like it because you will get to pick out the one you like best (from the category you'll be assigned to shop in when you are notified that we are going to use your challenge idea). Friday will be Customer Challenge Day so keep an eye out on the message board calendar. It will be fun to see what YOU come up with for us to do!

Note from Ro: Scrap Girls is now giving away birthday gifts to our message board members! Of course, it is a surprise what you will get because birthday presents are always surprises! But you will like it for sure because most people like money... Oops! Did I say that? No. I didn't say that. You did NOT hear me say that.

Anyway, make sure your message board email address is current and that you have the correct date entered into your profile or you'll miss out on the birthday present! (You will only be entering the month and the date so don't be shy. We won't know how old you actually are!)

Check our message board calendar if you have any questions about what is happening at Scrap Girls. All event times are given in Eastern Time Zone unless otherwise noted. Need help converting time zones? Check out the World Clock - Time Zone Converter. (Use 'USA-New York' as the location for the Eastern time zone.)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed!

*NEW!* MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop (Versions 6, 7, CS, CS2, CS3)

MORE Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed! for Adobe Photoshop Elements versions 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 & 5.0

It's time for you to stop playing catch-up in Photoshop and start having a blast doing the more advanced tricks that you see other people and professional digital scrapbookers doing.

  • Take the world's easiest shortcuts to creating your own backgrounds, embellishments, and alphas.
  • Make sure that you don't make the biggest mistakes that digital scrapbookers make when they create layouts.
  • Learn fantastic tricks for using Scrap Girls ScrapSimple products.
  • Dip your digital scrapbooking self into some of those "other" cool tools that are sitting there waiting in your software for you to use such as paths, masks, the drawing pen, and more.
  • See how easy it is to install and manage new Custom Shapes and Styles in Photoshop so that you can make things that are creative and unique.
  • Learn advanced tricks for using tools that you already know and love.
  • Watch me make some beautiful papers and get a chance to peek inside of my layers. (Oh dear... That is the last frontier and I might be out of my mind to let you do it... NOBODY likes people to see inside of their layers. It is like having visitors peek inside of your dresser drawers. Very private stuff.)
  • See a new way for coloring doodles. (I'm betting that it will surprise you what tool I've used to do that with, too...)
  • Get "IN" on creating your own brush sets. (You do NOT have to have those impossibly long brush sets frustrating you anymore. In fact, when you learn this trick, you will wonder why you haven't been using it all along.)
  • Find out why Custom Shapes are so important to you. (Bet you didn't know...)
  • Learn how to cut out a title from a background or a photo.
  • And even more...

Note: These are NOT beginning tutorials. If you get this training and you have never used Photoshop before or if you aren't pretty sure of yourself in the software, you are going to be lost. You simply have to understand layers, where things are located, and all of the basic, important skills that Ro teaches in her Scrapbook Software Secrets Revealed series before you try to use it.

Ro personally uses Carbonite to back up her computer. While it won't backup external hard-drives, it is a fabulous solution for keeping all of your important documents on your C:/ drive safe and your backups completely up-to-date at all times. Using it has made her stop worrying about losing important business and financial files, because the backup happens without Ro having to do a single thing.
