ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates don't absolutely have to be used as you see them, although that is certainly acceptable if you want to. For this layout, I decided to flip the entire template horizontally. I achieved this by selecting all of the layers of the template, then I hit Ctrl+T (for Transform). Next, I right-clicked within the box, and this brought up a menu. From that menu, I selected "Flip Horizontal." It's that simple to completely change the look of a layout template!

In order to create the trail of gold coins, I had to duplicate each layer of each size numerous times. This is one of those times when keyboard shortcuts are a lifesaver! By using Ctrl+J, I was able to duplicate those layers in an instant and also keep my sanity! I pressed Ctrl+J several times on each size and then moved them around my layout until I liked where they were placed.

When I don't have a shape (such as the four-leaf clover in this layout), I try to think if there is some way I can use products to create the shape. Here I used the heart from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Torn Paper Frames - Fun Shapes by duplicating, rotating, and moving the template pieces until it looked the way I wanted.

An Old Irish Blessing
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
with joy that long endures.
May all life's passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To get the crumpled corner, I layered one of the templates from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Crumpled Corners over a piece of paper from Mr. Fix It Collection. Then, using the Blending Modes of the paper template layer, I changed the look until I was satisfied that it looked realistic. I had difficulty finding just the look I wanted, so I duplicated the crumpled corner template layer and played around with the Blending Modes on both layers until I found the realistic combination. Then I made my stroke around the green paper on its own layer. To make it looked crumpled also, I layered the stroke beneath the template layer. To give it the added realism of a crumpled piece of paper, I went to the template layer and hit Ctrl+C to get the "marching ants." Then, moving back to my stroke layer, I hit Shift+Ctrl+I to inverse the selection, and hit the Delete key. Doing this deleted anything that wasn't within the "marching ants," and it looked like my stroke was part of the crumpled paper.

I had a lot more journaling than photos about our leprechaun experience last year. Somehow, my photos got deleted from my camera before I was able to download them. It was sad because it was quite an experience. I liked the idea of having the journaling behind the layout and having the page folded back. In order to fit all my journaling on the page, I had to shift ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Fancy Folds 1 to the right. I made sure all my folded layers were selected so that they would move together as one unit, instead of shifting them individually and trying to keep them all lined up (which would have been a headache). The easiest way to move multiple layers together is to link them. They still remain as individual layers and can be customized. If you merge them, they lose that ability.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I created this 8x10-inch layout and decided to add a digital frame, so I would know what it would look like if I decide to print it and hang it on a wall. In order to create the perfect size frame, first I added a blank layer above my finished layout by clicking on the "Create New Layer" button at the bottom of my Layers Palette. Next, I filled it by clicking my Bucket Tool (shortcut key = K). The color didn't matter because I was going to be applying a style to it. The result was a solid color layer. I needed the center of the layer removed. To do that, I selected my layer by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on its layer in the Layers Palette. This gave me "marching ants" around the edge of the layer. Next, I clicked on Select> Modify> Contract and set it to contract by 50 pixels. I clicked "OK" and then clicked Delete. This removed the center and left me with a nicely sized frame.

Digital scrapbooking makes it so easy to create a torn, grungy look on your layout. Let's admit it: Sometimes you just want to tear something! In this layout, I used ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Random Tears to create the fun, big, just-torn-out look on my main paper. It's easy to do! Open up the tear files in Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) and place them on your layout. The bottom layer of the tear is the background layer – meaning that the layer shows the background paper. Duplicate the layer with your background paper, if you like that look, and bring it up on your Layers Palette so it's just directly above the background tear layer. Use a clipping mask (Ctrl+G in Photoshop Elements; Alt+Ctrl+G in Photoshop) to attach your paper to the background layer. Other fun ideas for this torn layer include using a photo as your background paper. The sky is the limit! Go crazy with tears!

I knew I wanted to use ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Heraldic Crest Clusters for this layout, but I wanted to include more traditional St. Patrick's Day imagery. So I deleted the shield layer of the cluster and replaced it with a shamrock from ScrapSimple Type Shapes: Hearts and Shamrocks. Finally, to give the shamrock more texture, I clipped a paper from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Patch It Up by placing it above the shamrock layer and used the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Alt+G to create the clipping mask.

Journaling: I like to believe that Saint Patrick was a courageously optimistic person. Why? He was captured and sent to Ireland to be a slave, escaped, and then returned to the country of his captivity to teach them about Christ. I don't know of many people who'd do that. I also believe that he was quite clever. How ingenious to use the shape of the shamrock as a visual reference to the Holy Trinity.

Use a military-themed collection for a St. Patrick's Day layout? You bet! In digital scrapbooking, anything goes! I really loved the little charms in Assemble Your Own Zoom Pages: Irish Eyes, but I needed something to clip them to. My search for "chain" in Picasa (the program I use to organize my scrapping files) landed me a chain from Combat: International Collection, which fit perfectly in the space where I wanted the charms. The coloring was a little too dull for the layout, so I applied a gold style from ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Wires 6401. That was too bright! I duplicated the chain layer and removed the style from the lower layer. Then I reduced the Opacity of the layer with the gold style until it looked just right to me. While I was looking at the collection, I saw the Sand paper - and it was the perfect gold for the border of my layout, so I used it, too! Use your preferred search method in your own digital collections - I'll bet you find the perfect element in unexpected places.
