Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I wanted to use the Family word art from the You Are Collection Biggie, but I wanted to colors to fit with my layout design. To change the colors of the word art, I used the Magic Wand Tool (W), to select each letter and bracket. I was then able to use my color selector to pick a new color and paint it onto each letter and bracket. I also decided to replace the heart embellishment in the word art with a heart embellishment from Document It Collection Biggie. To do that, I used the Magic Wand Tool to select the heart from the You Are embellishment and then clicked on the eraser. Next I moved the heart from the Document It Collection Biggie into its place and resized it to fit.

Journaling: January in Ohio means we've spent a lot of time inside; the snow just kept falling! Hunter is getting really good at putting together puzzles all by herself. At 5 months old, Tucker is all play. He has finally figured out how to climb up and down the stairs and how to jump up on furniture. The girls had fun playing with daddy and even managed to get a ride on his shoulders. We were all laughing so hard as they ran around and played, but I managed to snap a few photos to remember all the fun! And although it is COLD outside, Hunter still loves to wear her dresses (inside) - that silly girl! And Aubrey spends some time playing on her Mobigo game... both girls really enjoy playing Dora on the Mobigo (especially on the drive to/from Kim's) & I love that they are spending time with a fun learning game.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

For this layout, I wanted to use the very darling Brush Set: Vintage Vol.7 - Girls With Hats to make button embellishments for my layout. On a separate document, I assembled the buttons, using ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Acrylic Bubble Buttons. First I layered a paper over the round mask and clipped them together. Then I stamped the brush on top of that, and then added the acrylic top and ring onto each button. Next I locked each group of layers together for each button and duplicated them onto my layout. I was careful to lock the layers together so that I could move each button group together as a single unit.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I love using layout templates for birthday or other holiday layouts. They really take the guess work out of composition when you want to include a lot of photos on your layout, which always seems to be the case for me when I'm doing pages about birthdays, Christmas, Easter, and so on. Pebbles' ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Life in Action Vol.1 were perfect for this page about my daughter's 6th birthday. I had no problem placing and fitting all the pictures I wanted to include and could then move on to the fun stuff! Let our super designers do some of the work for you and give some layout templates a try!

Journaling: Betsy Grace talked for months about having an Ariel birthday before the day actually came. We had lots of fun planning the cake we would make, looking for inspiration at craft stores and in the candy aisle. We had Molly over for the afternoon and to stay for Betsy's birthday supper. Betsy Grace and Scarlett helped make and decorate the cake. When Molly came over, the girls played dress-ups, made sand art in honor of the mermaid theme and Betsy opened presents. Molly gave her a FurReal Pet Panda and Mommy and Daddy gave her her very own digital camera. Betsy's request for dinner was pancakes, so we had pink pancakes and bacon and of course, cake and ice cream. My favorite memory is the look on Betsy Grace's face when we sang "Happy Birthday" to her. She was beaming and I can't believe our girl is six years old! She said she'd stay five forever!

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

I decided to use a template from ScrapSimple Digital Layout Album Templates: 12x12 Life in Action Vol.1 but wanted to make use of "white space" and add a few embellishments that would not fit on the full size template. To do this, I placed all of the pieces of the template on my layout's background paper and linked them together. I did this by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking on each layer in the Layers Palette and then clicking on the little "Link" icon (looks like a chain) at the bottom of the palette. Next I clicked on one of the layers on my workspace, pressed Ctrl+T and dragged one of the corners, resizing all of the layers of the template at one time.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

To desaturate my photos to match the color palette of Pebbles' Natural Affection Collection, I duplicated my photo layers. On the duplicated layer, I ran Erica Hite's ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop BandW 1801 Mini and changed the Blending Mode of that layer to "Hard Light" then lowered the Opacity until it gave me the desaturated look I wanted. There are easier ways to desaturate your photos, but I liked the extra control over color and saturation that this method gave me.

I wanted to highlight the week I was scrapping about on Pebbles Jones' Brush Set: Life in Action - Calendars 2011 Biggie. I added a new layer under the brush layer. Then I loaded Erica Hite's Dynamic Brush Set: Frayed 5401 and brushed it in green across the dates. Finally, I applied Shalae Tippets' ScrapSimple Tools-Styles: Fibers 4901 to add texture.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:

Here are the steps I took to create the "Poof" in my word art. First I typed the word and formatted the font, size and color. Then I created a new layer above the type, held down Ctrl and clicked on the type thumbnail to create a selection of my type. I inverted the selection using shortcut Ctrl+Shift+I and then used Dynamic Brush Set: Spray Paint 5401 with white to spray paint on the new layer until I achieved a look I was happy with. I still wanted the type layer to show through since the paper beneath isn't very dark but it was pretty harsh. To fix this, I applied a Gaussian Blur filter to my text layer (after rasterizing/simplifying it) and reduced the Opacity to 15%. It was still just a little harsh so I created a layer mask on the paint layer and using a brush from Brush Set: Grungelle set at a 30% Opacity, I lightly faded the sharp edges.

I adore all the beautiful brushes in the boutique, but sometimes they look a little flat just stamped in color on a layout. So marry them up with a style or use them as a clipping mask for a paper! On this page I clipped the brown paper from Natural Affection Paper Mini – Solid to the main title brushwork. Behind the photo, I used ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Painting Textures on a mask from Brush Set: Urban Grunge Photo Masks.

Hidden Treasures

Finding one of life's little gems is always a lovely surprise - like scoring an extra treat in a Cracker Jack box. We happened across one of those hidden treasures on a recent trip to Alcatraz Island.

It was a bright clear day, which is a gift in itself for the Central Coast of California. We were a party of four: Michael, our daughters, Ashley and Alyssa, and myself. The fact we had both of our college-age offspring together at the same time was a wonder, and it was fun to have just us four, like we used to be, and won't be very often again.

Upon arriving on "The Rock," we took advantage of the lower trail that wraps the island and was soon to close for renovations. After several hundred yards, we rounded a corner and were treated to a front row seat for the prettiest view of San Francisco — her hilly streets were there for our appreciation with the sun glinting off the soft waves of the bay like jewels. It was amazing to imagine the harshness of this small piece of tundra holding such a precious bounty in its hand, a bit like Beauty and the Beast. That one panorama alone was worth the trip and was the perfect beginning to our day.

People, like life, have pockets tucked away to be unearthed and discovered over time. While I've been a member of Scrap Girls for almost five years and a team member for nearly four and a half, I'm betting there are a few bits of Marnie trivia which most of you don't know. Here it goes:

  • I have four tattoos... so far (yes, Mom, I have another one!) - one on my lower left leg, one on my right foot, and one behind each ear. Three of them have a moon and stars theme, and the other one is a set of wings.

  • High heels are not my thing. In fact, I only own two pairs - one black and one brown. I believe they were invented for the sole (ha ha) purpose of torture and are inhumane. Some people spend their money on shoes or purses; I'd rather use mine for software or art supplies.

  • If not for the age difference and their contrasting opinions on Glee, my husband and fellow Scrap Girls designer Trish Yochum could have been separated at birth. It is scary. They are both competitive, have the same sense of humor, and they frequently say identical things about me. They even sleep in the same position. After talking to one of them, I often feel like I have entered an episode of The Twilight Zone.

  • When I was about five years old, I ate a spider. My friend told me that if I didn't eat a spider as a kid, I wouldn't be able to have babies when I grew up. As far as I know, her theory works.

  • I love to blog. Yes, I admit it, I'm addicted. I adore the whole thing: Writing, designing, coding, planning, and writing some more. I have this whole entire Marnie-verse, and I am in complete control. Bwahahaha!

Maybe these little nuggets of me wouldn't qualify as hidden treasures but could be filed in the category of "fool's gold!" Oh gosh, sometimes I crack myself up.

Here's hoping today sends you a little surprise - something unexpected to make you smile and warm your heart.

Your pal,
marnie

Favorite Product I've designed:
Loverly Collection Biggie

Loverly Collection Biggie

This is a hard choice as I am particularly fond of everything I made last year, especially the Grand Old Flag Collection and the Patchwork Quilt collaboration with my friends Amanda, Theresa, and Trish. In the end, I picked Loverly Collection Biggie because it is universal, and I just love the printer's blocks I created.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts Tutorial:
Creating a Digital Hand-Stitched Sampler Scrapbook Layout

Note: Tutorial created using Photoshop CS4 with Windows 7.

One of my favorite techniques in digital scrapbooking is to use items in an unexpected way. I like to "paint" on my digital scrapbook pages with unusual brushes. So I decided to use the lace in Brush Set: So Tatty to paint myself an old-fashioned, hand-stitched sampler - digital style.

For this tutorial, you will be using the Brush Tool, the Eyedropper Tool, the Blending Modes and the Opacity. You may or may not use the Rectangular Marquee Tool.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Photoshop tools needed.

First, choose a photo and a background paper. I chose ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Quilted Fabric for the simplicity and the house design and because it reminded me of an old-fashioned schoolhouse. I prepped my background by giving it a simple color. In this case, I colored it a sky blue.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Add color to paper template.

After the background is ready, create a new layer for the grass. Choose a brush that reminds you of grass and stamp or paint the grass on. To make it look painted into the background change the Blending Mode and Opacity to get the look you want. For this example, I used "Linear Burn" with Opacity at 90%.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Use a brush to paint accent elements on a digital layout.

Next, select a different brush for the sun and change the color to a nice yellow. Create a new layer to stamp the sun on and adjust the Blending Mode and Opacity to suit. For this example, my Blending Mode is "Color Burn" and my Opacity is 100%.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Add additional elements by using brushes.

Then, select another brush to use for some clouds. Select the background color using the Eyedropper Tool and then lighten it to a pale blue. Create a new layer and brush on some clouds. To keep the look of the lace, stamp your brush instead of sliding it. To vary the clouds, you can randomly rotate and size your brush to various random sizes. Overlapping stamped images will help disguise similar spots on the brush. Now adjust the Blending Mode and Opacity to suit your image. To get the light feel of clouds, I used a Blending Mode of "Screen" with the Opacity at 17%.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Change Blending Mode and Opacity.

Finish your background lace painting by adding a border and some finishing touches. To fill in just one part of a background with a large brush, use the Marquee Tool to select the area you wish to fill. You should see some "marching ants" outlining your selection. Stamp over the "marching ants" with the brush, and the brushwork will only show inside the selected area. For this example, I used another lace brush for the edging and the same brush for the door. Then I stamped a piece of lace above the door to use as the background for my title.

ScrapSimple Club Concepts Tutorial Screenshot: Use brushes to color elements.

Now add finishing details, such as brads for doorknobs and ribbon embroidery flowers from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Ribbon Embroidery.

Don't forget a fabric flower, like the one from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Floribunda, for the sun. Allow your brush work to enhance the layout and use the embellishments to tie various parts of the layout together.

MARCH EVENTS

March Message Board Game: Going on a Boutique Hunt!

Remember as a child when you played the game that started like this: "I am going on a ___ hunt and bringing..." then you listed an item with the first letter of your name or a specific letter? We are playing a similar game on the Message Board during the month of March. Each day, a new theme and starting letter will be posted in the Game thread. Members will search the Boutique for something that fits the theme and post a link to it in the Game thread. Only one product per letter per round will be counted, and products cannot be used more than once. Collections and their individual parts are one product, and time stamps will be used to determine which post came first in case of more than one post per letter. Entries are to follow the alphabet, starting with the letter posted with the theme each day. There's a limit of three posts per person each day, and there must be another player's post before posting again.

PRIZES: Members' names will be added to a drawing based on the number of qualified product links which they post in the thread. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month and winners will be announced in the April 2nd Newsletter. Gift certificates will be awarded as follows: First prize - $15 Gift Certificate; second prize - $10 Gift Certificate, and third prize - $5 Gift Certificate.

For complete details, visit the Monthly Message Board Games folder on the Scrap Girls Message Board.
