Make Layouts in 15 Minutes (or less)

For today's muse, I decided to see how quickly I could make some layouts of my new granddaughter, Baylee. I randomly choose a time limit of 15 minutes each. I realized right away that I couldn't spend a lot time fussing about how I would arrange the elements on the layout, so I headed straight to my layout template file and selected one. I choose to use Amanda Sok's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Scalloped Edges and Keri Schueller's My Sweet Baby - Girl Collection because I could use multiple photos on a couple of the layouts and because I liked the frilly edging and curved lines.

I decided that I would use a small number of supplies and that I would use most of them on all three layouts so that the embellishments and papers would tie all three layouts together. Because Amanda's template also had circles as one of the design elements, I decided that I would add a few additional circle elements – such as the brad that continued the circle and the circle of vines.

I think they turned out nicely.

I believe I could have even cut down the time a little bit, but I kept absent-mindly closing the supply windows and then I had to relocate the papers for each layout. (I was able to drag the embellishments from layout to layout each time because they aren't altered by the clipping mask, as the papers were.)

So if you are in a rush to create some layouts, try using some layout templates!

Weaving Digital Ribbons and Embellishments behind Photos

Note: Tutorial created using Adobe Photoshop CS3 with Mac OS 10.5.8

On a scrapbook layout where you have multiple photos, one way to unify the layout is by "weaving" a ribbon, or in this case, a tape measure, in and out of the frames. This can create the illusion of the embellishment going in front of and behind the frames. I will show you a method for creating this look.

First, I started my layout with three frames with pictures of my great-nephews, Sawyer and Jack. To create this look, add photos and frames on top of your choice of scrapbook paper. Place the tape measure from Watercolor Baby Boy Collection on a layer above the three frames. Then, I arranged the tape measure so it covers parts of each frame.

In the Tools Palette, I selected the Magic Wand Tool. Then, I selected (highlighted) one of the photo frame layers in the Layers Palette by clicking once on it. With my Magic Wand Tool, I clicked in the middle of the frame that I selected. If done correctly, you'll have "marching ants" going around the middle of the frame.

You'll repeat the above steps with the next frame in your Layers Palette; however, this time you will hold down the Shift key before clicking in the middle of the next frame. Holding down the Shift key before clicking in the middle of each frame will allow you select multiple areas on your layout.

Now you will have a selection of all three of the inside areas of the frames. At the top toolbar, go to Select> Inverse. This will change the selection to everything except the middles of the frames.

Click once on the tape measure layer in the Layers Palette to select it (highlight it). At the bottom of the Layers Palette, click on the Layers Mask icon and create a layer mask using that selection.

This will remove the tape measure that is behind the frames and will give the effect that the tape measure falls behind the photos, yet stays in front of the frames. Adding a drop shadow to the tape measure layer makes it look more realistic, too.

Add a few more embellishments, journaling, and a headline, and your layout is complete!

March Message Board Game: Going on a Boutique Hunt!

Remember as a child when you played the game that started like this: "I am going on a ___ hunt and bringing..." then you listed an item with the first letter of your name or a specific letter? We are playing a similar game on the Message Board during the month of March. Each day, a new theme and starting letter will be posted in the Game thread. Members will search the Boutique for something that fits the theme and post a link to it in the Game thread. Only one product per letter per round will be counted, and products cannot be used more than once. Collections and their individual parts are one product, and time stamps will be used to determine which post came first in case of more than one post per letter. Entries are to follow the alphabet, starting with the letter posted with the theme each day. There's a limit of three posts per person each day, and there must be another player's post before posting again.

PRIZES: Members' names will be added to a drawing based on the number of qualified product links which they post in the thread. Prizes will be awarded at the end of the month and winners will be announced in the April 2nd Newsletter. Gift certificates will be awarded as follows: First prize - $15 Gift Certificate; second prize - $10 Gift Certificate, and third prize - $5 Gift Certificate.
