I am always at a loss on how to use multiple photos in a layout. Thankfully, there are lots of Digital Layout Templates in the Scrap Girls Boutique that can come to my rescue! With the problem of photo placement out of the way, I can spend more time embellishing my page.

Journaling: Last summer we enrolled you in football camp. Every day for 2 hours, 3x a week, we hauled our picnic gear and watched you play. You were not the star player and often got scolded by the coach for not paying attention. But you were having fun, making new friends, getting fresh air and exercise, and learning to play a team sport. At the end of the summer, you got a participation medal and that made you smile from ear to ear. You were so proud! And so was I!

This entire layout took me less than an hour to complete since Marnie Adams's sketch from Scrapbooking 911 – 2-page Sketches to Revitalize Your Digital Scrapbooking eBook took all of the guesswork out of where to place my photos, embellishments, title, and journaling.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
Create a fun photo frame word cluster – easily! – by including your photo as part of the word as I did in this layout. I used Robert Schneider's Brush Set: Ink Trails and placed my photo in it, then used the Elliptical Marquee Tool to select my circle shape.
Select the inverse (Ctrl+Shift+I – the letter i, not a numeral 1 or a lowercase L). While making sure you are still selected on your photo layer, hit Delete. When you select the inverse, you are selecting the opposite of your initial selection – thus deleting everything outside the circle area.
After you have cut out your photo in a circle, you are ready to place your letters around the circle to spell your word. In this case, I spelled out "Boy." I also included several circular elements near my "y" to continue the "O" and "Circular" theme around my photo.

Journaling: Nathan is so silly! He usually makes silly faces when I am taking pictures of him - and I don't think I'd want it any different. He has always had a funny sense of humor, and he keeps us laughing. I absolutely love this boy of mine - he wouldn't be Nathan any other way. 11/6/10

ScrapSimple Paper Templates are designed to help you create unique, one-of-a-kind papers to coordinate perfectly with your layout! For this layout, I used three green papers and Blending Modes to create the main paper background on my layout. The first two papers (from A Gardener's Diary Collection and Monsters in my Closet Collection) are clipped to one of the ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Curled Up. The third paper, from Durango Collection Biggie, is simply layered over both the papers from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Curled Up, the paper from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Ripped and Rolled, and the photo of the frog. Setting the Blending Mode to "Overlay" for that top paper layer allowed the paper's darker, grungy layers to create a soft edge to my layout.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
To make the cute button of our dog, Ike, I used ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Acrylic Bubble Buttons. I wanted to highlight the head shaking and joyful look on him, so I decided to make a button of just his face.
First, I opened the template set. I selected the ring color and the style of the acrylic bubble top. Then, I took the round black mask layer and layered my photo directly on top of it. Then, I used a clipping mask so that my photo would take on the shape of the mask. Then, I layered the acrylic layer on top of my photo. Finally, I layered the outer ring on top of them. I locked all the layers together so I could move and size the whole button as one unit. I could also flatten the components of the button, but I chose not to in case I wanted to adjust it in any way. I followed the same process to make the small button centers of the flowers, except I added a paper and the sticker on top of the round mask, then I followed the same steps as above.

One thing I miss the most about paper scrapbooking is inking. There is something fun - and perhaps a bit therapeutic - in inking the edges of items on the page. I love Syndee Nuckles's ScrapSimple Tools - Styles: Sanded Edge Black 6302 for helping me to achieve a similar look on my digital pages with one click of the mouse. The edges of my photos and small blocks of patterned paper were just not standing out from one another, and I didn't want to add a formal mat around each one. The "inked" edges were just what they needed!

Journaling: Actually as I recall several months later, all three of you boys were quite manageable at the zoo at the beginning of our vacation. You loved posing with the colorful animal statues and usually held up one of your stuffed animals in the photo. Michael didn't even manage to look ferocious in his shark mask. Cutest darned shark I ever saw!

My photo wasn't taken in good lighting, so it was dark and slightly out of focus. I needed an action to make it look a little better, and I wanted something to add a little extra fun to go with my overall layout look. I decided to use ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Photos That Pop PSE 1801 to help fix the photo's color. I followed up with ScrapSimple Tools - Actions: Comical PSE 8301 Mini to add the extra fun I was looking for. I have learned that actions come in handy when working with less-than-high-quality photos.

Journaling: Jeremy had one too many Mai-Tais when he was picked to go on stage and do the hula. He really let it go. Only wish his wife was there to see him in action. Kona, Hawaii, Aug. 2007

I wanted to create a paper mat to layer behind my photo collage, but I didn't want to use the standard circle or square shape I normally use. To switch things up, I combined two brush sets to create my own custom mask to create a fun mat behind the focal photo of my photo collage. First, I selected a brush from Brush Set: Blotch and stamped it on its own layer. Next, I selected a brush from Brush Set: Scribbled. On the same layer, I stamped around the edges of the blotch. Finally, I clipped the tan paper to the combined brush layer.

The paper I started with from Bursting Collection has plenty of blending going on in it. To compliment that look, I used Blending Modes on a number of the items I added. Down the left side, the journaling uses the "Linear Dodge (Add)" mode at 90%. The two lists of "energy, action, speed, focus..." use the "Soft Light" mode at 60%. The border from ScrapSimple Paper Templates: Artistic Edges uses the "Soft Light" mode at 90%. Finally, the arrows from Junk in the Trunk Collection Biggie use the "Luminosity" mode at 100%. It's fun to play with the Blending Modes and opacity to see what kind of looks you can achieve.

Directions for one technique I did on this layout:
I wanted to achieve the look of blending the background of the photo with the rays of Mandy Steward's ScrapSimple Digital Layout Templates: Bursting. First, I duplicated the photo layer and extracted the subject from the background on the topmost layer. I placed one of the masks from ScrapSimple Embellishment Templates: Artful Photo Masks 2 between the unaltered photo layer and the bursting background. Next, I used a clipping mask (Ctrl+G for PC; Cmd+G for Mac) to make the unaltered photo layer take the shape of the mask. Finally, I merged the photo layer and the mask, then I reduced the Opacity of the single layer to 70%.
